That entire unit is called a power pack. It consists of the engine, transmission, reduction gear, and heat exchanger. The engine is actually just the smaller part sticking out of the pack.

worked E-3's for 4 years in Alaska, while i know very little about the computer & Radar system i can say for sure the engines and airframe are very reliable

Any word about the diesel engine replacement for these gas turbines? Last I heard, Detroit and Caterpillar are not interested and bowed out of the study early.

With turbine having ultra short life this operation is quite frequent. Horrible junk.
