We were also raised from a young age building with our father. We both follow your channel and now look on making our own channel here in Canada. It’s nice to see two brothers working together as we are. Great channel and we are now in contact with Evolve stone to introduce that product here in our area. Thanks and keep up the great work.

Cedar is a readily available wood in the northeast. It has great resistance to both rot and insects. It also weathers beautifully. Since there are a lot of older homes, cedar was the wood of choice over the past couple centuries since they didn’t have fancy stuff like pressure treated, OSB, etc. That’s why it’s used there.

Cedar shake siding and roofing up north (especially New England) was a popular choice going all the way back to colonial times due to it's nature resistance to rot and general weather resistance. However, these days nobody uses it for roofing, and only wealthy people will use it for siding due to it's cost, but also to maintain its historical aesthetics.

I've helped with two "waterproof" decks before. The first was a small front porch like that which had an intentional slope of about a half inch per foot and a sealed sheet of 1/8" ply under the boards with the boards running the same direction as the slope. The second was built as a normal deck then had one inch per foot sloped tracks framed in with some 2x2 that could hold corrugated panels just under the deck boards and guide the water out to the side. The galvanized panels lasted about 15 years then got swapped for plastic.

Most important (as you did !!) don't nail on first and paint the wall later. It is a hell of a job to paint in the narrow gaps (shingles shrink), plus no protection of the back-side. Our house in Nova Scotia is all Atlantic cedar shingles, so I know the burden :). For the back-side only paint the bottom inch. Both me and my wife can paint a full bundle of shingles in 20-30 mins, still a lot of work. Here a technique for drying: lay them in a circle, 6' diameter and the thick part of the shingles facing outwards. Then put layer on layer, the painted ends hardly touch. We have had in the garage stacks up to four feet high. Another time we white-washed them, Fill the first bucket with 6" of paint/thinner mix and dump the shingles in. Then take (by the handful, wear gloves) all of them out and put 'paint down' in bucket two to let excess white-wash drip off. Lastly, put that stack in bucket three, but now upside down, so painted end upside. This prevents marks on the painted surfaces. Wait a minute and then move them to the drying pile. Paint collected in bucket 2 and 3 goes back into bucket 1. Using this method we did at least four bundles per hour.

We pre-paint our smart side before we install. Then second coat in place after caulking. Just stack them up on saw horses and roll both edges and the face. As you paint the face you set it aside. Goes super fast.

I live in an over 100 year old house, and the cedar shingle siding is still on there, underneath a late 50's Aluminum siding covering. The roof was also cedar shingles, but we had to replace that almost 20 years ago because before we bought it, it already had an illegal amount of asphalt shingle layers (3) on it, so we had to strip it all for code and to put new on. My understanding, is that cedar wasn't that expensive back then and was plentiful, besides the rot/decay resistance characteristics.

One little detail I do is paint the electrical box and the gas meter the same color as the siding or brick that they are mounted up against, ya it's just a little thing but it makes them disappear/blend in and become part of the house rather than an additional eyesore...as well as I always paint the PVC plumbing vent stacks up on the roof the same or close to the color of the shingles or predominant roof color, same goes for the high efficiency furnace vent/intake I paint them the same corresponding colors as the brick or siding, everyone I have done the owner appreciates it!!! Just another "attention to detail" that most miss...and it only take a few minutes!!! I call it Value added!!! always leave them wanting more!!!

Love my LP Smart siding. Looks great and doesn’t break like Hardie board. You also don’t need a respirator to cut it.

When caulking only the two sides shall get in contact to the sidings/tiles. Do not caulk so deep into the gap that the back is getting in contact to base boards (tree sided contact). Then the caulking will loose flexibility on expansion/contraction and will start to crack. Insert some foam tube behind (as a stop) when the gap is to deep and the caulk may run to deep while applying. Expansion/contraction flexibility does not change the volume. For example on gap contraction left/right the caulking will expand front/back and vice versa.

Cedar siding was used heavily where I am at the Jersey shore. Rot, bug, And salt air resistant. Lasts for hundreds of years properly maintained. The salt air is rough and we have to use resistant materials.
