Repairing a Vintage Raychem Thermogun Model 750

I finally decided to check the wiring on my vintage Raychem Thermogun. It's been my go to heat gun for 25 years so there was a chance it needed to be looked at. Wow, was I right. Inside was the worst wire I had ever seen. Literally crumbling to dust and dangerous. Fortunately, I have everything I need to repair it. Let's get busy!

I wonder how many years I've been using it with the wire ready to short out. :)

Thanks! To think that I bought this at a swap meet 25 years ago and have been using it ever since is wild. I'm glad I was able to repair it.

Great repair it's a miracle you didn't get shocked before. Do you think the original wire may have been under sized so it over heated. I do like the fact that you don't give up. Thanks for sharing your expertise.

A miracle is a good word for it. That was like wire insulated with cookie crumbs. :) You raise an interesting question. It's possible that the insulation had been overheated many times and that caused it to harden and crack or it may be that it was just a type of material which degrades over time. May have even been a combination of the two. Either way, luck was with me here.
