Thanks! I'm lucky yo have two old school flea markets nearby that have a lot of vintage tools. I suspect this won't be the case for much longer as even the used markets will soon be replaced by modern/foreign brands.

When you said that you might have to chock this up as a failure, I was pretty sure that you weren’t gonna stop there. 😁 Nice fix!

Thanks! If the vice didn't work I had one option left and that was to try to split the rusted lock ring. I suspect that would have broken it so it was a last resort. I'm glad that I didn't need to try that but it would have made the video more interesting. :)

Thanks! I always look in flea market tool boxes for ratchets. occasionally I buy one which is actually broken but most are just stuck.

I've never seen Sears branded tools. I thought all Sears tools were Craftsman. Maybe this was a budget line? I guess I can take it easy for the rest of the day since I learned something new. Thanks for the lesson.

My guess is that these were budget and would not have had the Craftsman warranty either. As I recall, they did have a line 20 years ago called "Evolve" (I think) that was also foreign and with a limited warranty.

There should be a push by button to release it

You don't take a part ratchets and clean and re lube them? The sears has a lock ring holding the gear in.

Good point. The ring on this one was overlapping and rusty so i went the mystery oil and turn route. Since that worked I didn't attempt to get the ring off. I do open ratchets up to clean them if they're stuck USA brands. I recently opened up a stuck Armstrong ratchet. Just taking the cover off unfroze it. No idea why it was even stuck in the first place.

try a 50/50 mix of ATF & Acetone to loosen seized items.

I've used mystery oil a lot which is like ATF but never ATF mixed with acetone. I'll give that a shot next time. Thanks!

good job did you see the short where they put a 10mm snapon wrench in a vice and bend sideways until its 90 degrees and then they take a icon and try the same thing it bent most of the way but broke before reaching 90 degrees. i posted snapon must be scared of icon to go that far to find a way to brake a icon and the snapon didn't. i also said show me where using a wrench like that was needed in mechanic. Snapon is running scared

Thanks! No, I haven't seen that video. Seems like it didn't prove much. I don't doubt that Snap On is good quality, but other USA brands are fine for all that I do.

Why didn't you open any of these ratchets & do a proper cleaning & lube?

Valid question. :) I did open the Proto and flush it out. I haven't done anything to the Bonney yet other than oil it. I should have explained better the issue with the Sears. On that one the lock ring ends were overlapping and rusted solid so I didn't see a way to get the pliers in and if I broke the ring that would have been the end of it.
