Troubleshooting and repairing a room fan that is spinning to slow and takes a long time to get to the correct speed. These fans are easier to repair then you might think! Learn how to test the motor capacitor and oil the bearings!

Thank you for taking the time to do this. I took your advice and tried lubricating the front bearing. It got better. Motivated by that, opened up the casing and got to the rear bearing. Running as good as new now.

There should be a felt material surrounding the bushings that needs to be saturated with light oil (3 in 1 will work). The bushings are made of sintered metal that allow oil to slowly seep through. Doing this every 2 years or so will keep the fan running for a very long time or until the switch breaks. It's best to disassemble the fan to do this. You may need to lightly tap the shaft in several radial directions after reassembly to realign the bushings to the shaft if it doesn't spin freely, especially the front bushing which usually gets out of alignment during disassembly and reassembly. The bushings are convex on their outside diameter to allow for this.

The reason why your fan was barely spinning and gaining the proper speed after some minutes was a grease that sort of wore out by mixing with dust from air and moving parts (mostly from air though), which required heat to become more liquid. Since your motor can't rotate, its coils are overloaded and can't cool themselves by the wind they would produce, so the motor heats up very fast, old grease liquefies and creates less friction. However, this is extremely dangerous for the motor windings, and you shouldn't use it like this in any case. Since they overheat, either a built-in thermal fuse will pop and cut off power from coils, or the coils themselves will be "thermal fuses". Again, that is very dangerous, the coils' insulation would melt, causing short circuit and then fire. What I did with the similar fan which was in use for 5 years with original grease is completely disassembling the motor, cleaning all grease along with all crap in it and adding new. Did it twice to make sure there's no dirty grease anymore. Just in case did the same thing with the oscillation mechanism, however, after that I had to disable it by removing one of its gears, because as I've found out later, that mechanism caused a plastic ring on the shaft inside the motor to rub against a bearing and pollute the new grease. As long as I'm the only user of this fan, it's OK. And now it works much better even than when it was brand new. 2nd and 3rd speed practically make no difference, and 1st is just a bit slower. Now it's so powerful that I don't keep it powered for long because it cools everything very fast.

Gotta love an easy fix, today I had to do the same 3rd time for my fan but it still runs like fast and then slow and fast and slow but the difference you just hear it in the fan, I'm guessing that is the cap, right ?
If you have been oiling the fan for some time and it is still slow and jammed , try putting a some diesel on the motor, turn it with your hands and leave it to dry. Then put some WD40 and try it on. It works like new.

My fan is on high setting but blowing on low. Would that be a capacitor problem also? Hope you see my message. I really can't afford to buy a new fan right now but hoping I could fix mine. Your videos are so helpful! My fan starts up fine and makes no noise. It's just not blowing on high anymore.

Wd-40 would work but probably wouldn't last that long (but this is most likely a temporary fix anyways)
hi, i have a question, hope you could clarify. my main motor there are a few copper wires (maybe a couple) are broken, will it still working? or it’s dead now and need to replace a new motor?. thank you.
why everyone is lubing the bearings instead of applying grease on them?
my pedestal fan has a new capacitor and the motor is ok but the fan is not running what is the main problem?
the high speed of you taking it apart and taking the capacitor off didn't help, same putting it together, but did help me sort of
Eh, if this happened to a fan that you bought a year ago and was still under warranty, would you return it or try to fix it? 🤔 Is it a really bad sign that this would happen to a box fan after being used at home for just 1 and a half summers? cheers

i have a question, is the capacitor bad or the winding bad, my fan spins like normal, spins up easily except its slower than the normal speed of a new one, fast is medium speed, medium is slow speed, slow is really slow but still spinning, i have had the fan for about 4 years, i run it almost 24/7, i add oil to the bushings every 3-4 month and hence am kinda confused as to what the issue might be. thks

@@ainzooalgown7589 my 10 microfarad capacitor was measuring 7.5! Tolerance was 5% so it is definately bad. Waiting for new one to arrive
What if to check the capacitor without desoldering? It is possible?

You will have to desolder it unless you have a ESR meter.

Could you just cut the wire and connect the wires back together?
Again 3 in 1 red oil.. not the good kind of oil you need the blue 3 in 1.
