That metal ring makes it very quick. I normally have to graft in wood on the inside of the peg box to reinforce the repaired split area.

Thank you for the video, I thought it was a good idea to make a special block to make it easier to clamp the ribs back to the neck block.👍👍👍 I would like to purchase the tool you used to fit the metal ring in the peg box, can you please tell me where you purchased it?

How do I know if my bridge is in the optimal position and how can someone get the best sound out of a violin in terms of structure, not the way the instrument is played? Greetings from Chile.

Curious what the ring slot cutting tool is called specifically, so that I might acquire one as well if they're for sale somewhere. Dictum, perhaps?

For whoever else is interested, I was able to track it down eventually with basic search terms like 'violin peg ringer'. But it seems to be somewhat of an esoteric tool.

@@thomasmcniece5330 The dealer gets around $250 for this tool, but it looks to be absolutely worth it. Both inside and outside pegbox cheek repairs using new wood are tedious and exacting.

Did you apply something to the areas of the Academia Cremonensis inside form in the area of the blocks before you glued the blocks on? I've occasionally had problems getting blocks off of a form. Heard a recommendation to apply a little spirit varnish to the form first. Tried it; then the blocks didn't stick well enough.

Hello Ron. No I didn't but I understand what you mean. It is a matter of putting just the write amount of glue. I have had a couple of time the that block comes of as I'm working on it (so, not enough glue) and times that a small part of the block remained on the mold.

Material question - What do you think about carbon fiber as instrument material? Do you have experience repairing/setting instruments made from CF? I understand potential problems with spruce top and other softer wood parts but do you think maple and ebony being more hard/heavy could be substituted? (CF is almost twice as heavy as ebony but has order of magnitude more stiffness). Not a bow instrument maker or player but interested in process of building string instruments, materials and their interactions. Great videos by the way.

I have used carbon fibre in makeing accustic guitars and 2 cellos and it works very well with weight and sound. Not affected by weather like wood. But it has it's draw backs because there are a few chemicals involved.

maestro-Kimon sorry, must have the wrong word! I mean where violin makers deliberately age instruments. Including denting, scratching and ageing the finish.

  • @hankwangn

I personally think antiquing is silly when it involves making the varnish look completely worn out. But the first scratch that you add to your own instrument doesn't feel as bad when there are already a few scratches from the maker. :)
