Hi Paul X, what is the acceptable runout for the DT125 crankshaft? If I'm not mistaken, I saw about 0.03mm when you were done. I'm about to try and align a crankshaft myself. Thanks

Interesting technique. I used to turn back to clean steel and build it up with a type of rod called “ machineoweld” as I recall, then cut new threads. This looks strong and no heat affected zone.

I had a similar problem on a Norton International crank, but luckily it wasn't quite as bad and i could turn back to round and pick up the original thread again. Customer was virtually in tears (of joy) when i fixed it.

It's great to see this ingenious repair to an otherwise irreparable, rare and expensive crankshaft! Your beautifully devised, engineered and installed components ensure that this crankshaft can now return the bike to the road. As a former motorcycle mechanic and motorcycle workshop owner I respect your high standards of workmanship and very well equipped workshop.

Where did you find the keyway mill ?
How much force is such a Dowell pin capable of withstanding? Is it possible to press fit 2 50cc crackshafts together and lock them in place using a 4mm Dowell? I am building a twin and this looks like a neath way of connecting the 2. I want to 'hide' the Dowell under one of the bearings for added structure..
Центровка сделана не убедительно :( Вы измеряете круглость цапф и радиальное биение подшипников а не соосность поверхностей цапф.
Trabalho magnífico de profissional inteligente!
dont understand why many trueing a crank with indicators direkt over the resting point, they need to be as far away as possible from eachother, extremely wrong can look good on the indicators

Not only that, all he had to do is re-cut the threads, and you can do that without taking the crank apart.

Yes deflection will be at minimum over resting point. To get the greatest distance it would be best to rest at the outer edges of the crank and measure at bearing location, that will give you the maximum deflection distance.
Super , good job
Looks good. But couple of questions, 1) did you end up heat treating those threaded rods and nuts? 2) why didn’t your cut off those damaged threaded and drill a shallow centre hole and weld new threaded rod and chase with a die? Would that’ve been easier than pressing and pinning? And wouldn’t have had to cut a key way?

Would you explain, why should you centering crank shaft in three phase?
@FIDDYgg
2 жыл бұрын
Easier to make large adjustments with less pin engagement, those pins are tight... As you press the halves together, adjusting becomes more difficult. Best to get it close first, and only need minor adjustments once fully pressed.

The hexagon nut lifts the threaded pin without the locking pin. The Loctite have don't so power. It work well.

In my opinion this kind of overhauling means an immense weakening of the crankshaft. Hopefully everything (still works well.
