Rep x Peppin Dumbbells - A Close Look

Спорт

The very first product I wanted to make sure and get video of at Home Gym Con was the Rep X Peppin adjustable dumbbell prototypes. Rep flew these in from Germany for this show and it was worth it! These are the real deal and everything people are hoping they'll be!

These do look awesome . I would say the closet competitor to these would be The brand new Power Block Commercial pro 100 EXP . The new commercial handles are so balance without the adder weights . They feel just like real dumbbells when doing curls and that’s not normally the case with power block . I own them and love them . These are very nice as well . 💪😉

I'm a huge PowerBlocks fan and since making this video have 75% decided to just keep my PB set. It's over 10 years old and still works perfectly. No reason to spend money to replace something I already love!

Now that these are a reasonable price they blow away the competition. The only thing they dont have is super fast 5 pound weight increments - but neither do the higher weoght powerblocks. And if you need 100 or more pounds there arent many options - this one really shines.

Think they are going to have an adder weight in the final model this is a prototype that’s how they get to 125 on these 85, 105, 125 I believe

I think the only competition at this point is folks with already fixed dumbbells. I already have 10-60 pounds in 10 pound jumps in rubber hex dumbbells so I won't be committing to this but they are very nice if starting out.

Great overview Tim. I know you’re debating replacing the PowerBlocks you love for these. Might I recommend keeping them even if you get these? I have two pairs of adjustable dumbbells and that works out well since I actually don’t have to deal with as many adjustments between sets and there’s added convenience when working out with others. Or you can move the PBs inside the house in case you don’t have time to get into the garage and want to do something quick. I plan to do that myself with one of my pairs eventually. I’d imagine your PowerBlocks won’t net you much $ in a sale so maybe just make up for that with a few months of savings if you need.

That's a great suggestion. In the end, I probably won't buy these Rep units so unless Rep sends me a pair for review (which is highly unlikely) I don't see a reason to spend the money. I really do like my PB and at over ten years old, they still work like new. As much as I like to buy shiny new things, it would be kind of a waste of money for me. Thanks for your suggestion, though, I think that's an amazing solution for people in the same situation!

If I wanted to use wrist straps with them will the side bars interfere with getting the straps cinched down? It's impossible for me to use straps with my power blocks

NOt sure. I was wondering about Fat Grips as well. There is more room on these than the PB for sure, but I don't know if there's enough space for straps or not. It's a great question. Hopefully someone responds here to your comment. I'd love to know too!

My theory is you only need 5 pound increments for lower weight ranges.. like I curl 30, 35, 40... beyond 50 10 pound increments works... I think I will stick with the rep quickdraw, my fixed set 5-60 and grab a few larger used... You don't need every 5 pound increments for sure... these are expensive...

So just to be clear, is there no way to slide the locks on the side to an offset position to get 5lb increments like the original Pepins? Only asking because on the rep x pepin site it says 10lb increments while the original pepin site says 5lb increments.

That's a great question. They have a showroom in Denver, but that's about it as far as I know. That's a huge reason I started GymCrafter and do such long reviews in a lot of cases. there's just no way to try most of this stuff before you buy.

One thing I've been curious about these, how do these dumbbells feel with exercises like forearm curls where you need to roll the dumbbell down to the fingertips and back up? I imagine the side bars/structural cage would hinder you from getting that full extension in your hands, but I wanted to ask you for your opinion. I wanted to buy these for myself soon and was going through a list of workouts I can do with these in my head, forearm curls were definitely a curious one with these

You may still be somewhat limited in range with that movement, but there are so many other ways to train forearms, I wouldn't let that be a dealbreaker at all.

There's really nothing else to show as you can't see the internals from either side. I also was told that they would be redesigned slightly for the production model, but I'm not sure if they did or didn't.

I rather have fixed (solid) hex dumbbells too, which is why I do (from 5 lbs to 100 lbs in 5-lb increments). The problem with advanced adjustable dumbbells is that they are made of many parts, and even if it is rare for Pepin or Rep dumbbells to go bad, it can still happen. I already have a proverbial bird in the hand, along with a set of Power Blocks, so I can't see the logic of buying a new set of adjustable dumbbells.

  • @GymCrafter

I love my PowerBlocks and may not actually replace them. I have a bad habit of replacing perfectly good things because something newer and a bit better came out. I wish I had the space and budget for fixed, that's clearly the better choice, but if you are tight on space, these and the PB are the two best options, imo. It's too bad it's not 2020 when used Power Blocks were going for $1500 a set!

@@shiwakuseven5859I’ve had the fixed hex dumbbells and found that on some of the heavier sets, the welds can break. Never had an issue with my power blocks and dare I say, the nuobells. I could not imagine having a dumbbell in my gym that cannot be dropped. All serious lifters drop the dumbbells, why do they even make ones you can't drop. Fixed dumbbells are the way to go but sometimes space is just not available for them. The only kind to even consider are these in this video. They are gonna put all the others out of business. This is what you get when you make the best product and make it affordable!!!!!!!
