Canadian here! I love criticizing the government as much as anyone, but they actually weren't responsible for that travesty of a commercial. It was made by a feminist charity called the Canadian Women's Foundation. As to why that statistic is so high, from what I can tell their statistics come from self-reported surveys rather than actual crime statistics, they combined physical and sexual abuse, and knowing feminist studies their definitions for those were probably extremely loose. Also, even if this had been a government sponsored PSA I don't see how Trudeau would be responsible. He was elected a year ago. Harper - a conservative - was the Prime Minister when this commercial came out.

I believe that people can usually take jokes well when they actually find them funny. If you're taking it seriously or questioning why a certain joke was made, that usually means you didn't find it funny. I mean, good humor is VERY subjective the more you think about it. I'd even go as far as saying that Doug's take on comedy being solely based on misery is bulls***.

Basically Harper put all of the Canadian economy up on blocks that were our oil industry, despite knowing that it was essentially putting the entire country in a ready to burst bubble. Our entire economy revolved around oil, and when Saudis no longer limited their production, our economy crumbled. He tried to spin himself as being an amazing PM for the economy, but a huge portion of our national debt was built up by him, essentially sabotaging the economy for the next PM. He also ran a heavily negative campaign in every election, using statistics that weren't always clear cut. He was very American in that way. This commercial is potentially an example of that, if the stats are from the government. Because it uses both "physical and sexual abuse" to make up the stat, it's impossible to say if it's true or not, since the definitions of "physical abuse" can be heavily varied. From spankings to beatings, depending on how sensationalist they want the commercial to seem. Now we have Trudeau, who has to somehow work with a collapsed economy, shaky political climate and fight the conservative propaganda machine that will shift all of the blame to him. He's doing that by spending more, which is frowned upon pretty heavily, but hopefully it'll work out and we won't get an even faster decline into dumpster fire levels of economic stability. His budgetary ideas are pretty shaky. Like... really shaky, but it's hard to say if they'll work or completely backfire. My guess is both at the same time, but I'm cynical like that.

I don’t blame those clown comments. There was a time a few years ago where children were getting abducted by clowns
