After watching the original animated film. I can safely say that while the remake "played it safe" by doing the exact type of scenes. There were many, MANY things the remake lacked. 1. Belle wasn't seen as strange JUST for her love of reading. It was also her father's eccentric nature and inventions that helped fuel the fire. 2. The musical numbers didn't have the same whimsy or vocal skills the original had, especially Tale as Old as Time 3. While I warmly accept and praise the LGBTQ and all positive references the media makes toward them. I never saw LaFou as being "gay for Gaston," in the original. He just came across as an overeager fan. Kind of like that kid kid with the Troll hair in Oblivion. After you become the Grand Champion of the arena. 4. While I LOVE Dan Stevens as an actor. Ever since I learned his name from Downton Abbey. His portrayal of The Beast lacked the sort of sympathy and strength of character the original had. Lastly, the story in the beginning was done so much better in the original. A splendid use of "show and tell" through the stain glass window displays. While in the remake, it all just felt out of place

  • @kinagrill

I don't mind that the bit with Belle's father wasn't song well.... it actually fits well. It's a private moment voiced out in a soft tune. But this movie.... they should have made it more of a mix of a musical, an opera and a regular-formated movie. They need a ton of bodymovement and bodylanguage in the movie - just like in the older animated version. You get both the voice, the body language, the whole 'almost a dance' while they sing! But no, we just get walking people, walking or riding around.

Nate I know it's a nice thing to be able to understand lyrics in a song but it's not always necessary. Remember when gangnam style was a thing? People didn't know most of the lyrics but it was still popular. Cannibal corpse lyrics are more like horror stories usually about someone getting chopped up or something along those lines. It's not too important that you understand them as long as you enjoy the music.

*+Ryan R. As long as I've watched the channel, I'm pretty sure most if not all his reviews are like that. His character is named NOSTALGIA Critic and Doug never claimed or portrayed him to be objective.* His views are almost always to an extent influenced by nostalgic bias and that's the point. It's the physical personification of that stereotypical arrogant, strongly opinionated person many have met at least once irl. And let's be honest, almost nobody is innocent in that when it comes to how invested they are in their subjectivity. It happens to the best of us, Doug merely owns it through this exaggerated, almost cartoonish persona. It's a caricature that acts as an outlet for his more passionate side in the name of entertainment. I often disagree with his points as well but can usually at least understand where he's coming from and appreciate his work ethic. I've even thought about familiar films in new ways. Lastly, while they're not experts or final authorities on cinema, it should be noted that Doug & Rob went through film school and have seen far more movies than the casual viewer. Again, that doesn't make his opinion superior or elevate it to fact. But it does make his opinion more informed than, say, someone like me who doesn't have time to watch nearly as many films on a day-to-day average. *When you go through enough movies regularly (especially for purposes of a job such as that of a critic), your views & standards are inevitably influenced by the sheer amount of cliches, flaws, and general patterns.*

From what it's come to light with Channel Awesome it's seems that the Walkers are just incompetent and not good at handling big projects so they are just unintentionally bad to work with since they lack self awareness on many of their flaws and if the person they are working with isn't able to conform to them it makes for a bad experience. Which is concurrent with all the accounts coming from CA alumni, the real problem with Channel Awesome is the person working behind the scenes Mike Michaud a manipulative asshole that is the CEO of Channel Awesome and owns the Nostalgia Critic character, he got rights of everything Doug built due to him and Rob not wanting to be responsible for the business side of things so they left it in the hands of someone who at the time was a trusted friend of the siblings and who now has them on a leash. CA alumni blame Doug for not doing anything and while slightly justified the thing is that Doug really can't do much or else he loses the legal right to do his show which is his livelihood and if he tried to do anything he could lose everything and legally he would be in the wrong due the Michaud legally owning it all. Doug has a hell of a lot to lose if he goes against Michaud unlike most of the Alumni who had independent channels on top of working with Channel Awesome so if shit went south they could just rebuild on their own personal channels.

  • @TheMadMadman

And I hate to say it but I feel like some of the CA alumni are trying to pin everything on Doug and Rob because they're bitter over not getting as much exposure as he did (which is entirely understandable but hey if not a lot of people want to watch your content then that's your problem, not theirs), since none of them ever got very close to how many views the NC got. Movies like Hercules, Hunchback and the Little Mermaid being examples of movies they could do that with.

Hate to inform you of this ... not really a joke. 50 Shades of Grey was originally a Twilight fanfic. I'm not kidding. E.L James, the 50 shades author, wrote a twilight fanfiction, which she later rewrote as a story with original characters (swapping Edward and Bella with Christian Grey and Ana) and that was eventually developed into 50 Shades.

Linkara expresses displeasure, certainly, but mostly at himself for not being able to help more during his time on the crew. He really wasn’t that harsh towards the Walkers, or anyone other than himself and, to a certain degree, Michaud. i almost wish he had been, since until his write-up, i’d have never known.

2 hour movie, and somehow they show less than the original. Skipping over emotional scenes and focusing on non important shit. Those extra minutes could’ve been used so much better. Maybe show a bit more of Beast’ daily life since he usually disappears until Belle has to interact with him. Or maybe show the father twisting him and the servants having to choose between helping him and risking death from the king, and staying away. Lengthening the movie had so much potential, but they waste it.

While I personally enjoyed this version of Beauty and the Beast, I have to admit as well, it wasn’t perfect by a long shot. There were several points that while were interesting, didn’t really go anywhere (in particular Agatha being the Enchantress REALLY pissed me off) and while the singing doesn’t match up with the original. On the other hand, I do enjoy the art style (dark fantasy meets Baroque) several elements of the story, particularly the ones that came from the original tale, a few plot threads from the old film being tied up, and while the film couldn’t match with the original, it tried its damnest to do it anyway! If you are quite forgiving about Disney remakes, I’d reccomend it
