Renault Megane E-Tech vs Cupra Born

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

To look at the Cupra Born and the all-new Renault Megane E-Tech, you might think this test is a slightly strange comparison. Yes, they're both all-electric family cars, but while the Born has a low-slung sporty attitude, the Megane E-Tech has a more upright, almost SUV-like stance.
However, our two contenders are much more alike than you might think. The Renault and Cupra are virtually identical on size, very close on power (220 horsepower and 204 horsepower, respectively), very close on pace (0-62mph in 7.5 seconds and 7.3 seconds, respectively) and very close on WLTP range (280 miles and 263 miles, respectively). More critically, though, they're also very close on price. In the forms tested here, just £105 separates our two cars.
In this CarGurus UK video review, Rebecca Jackson puts the two cars head-to-head, and compares them in every area, including quality, technology, practicality, and of course, what they're like to drive.
Renault Megane E-Tech
Read the full written review of the Renault Megane E-Tech: www.cargurus.co.uk/Cars/Renau...
Pros
More enjoyable to drive than most EVs
Brilliant Google infotainment system
Very roomy for passengers
Cons
Oddly shaped boot
Weird square steering wheel
Tiny paddles for adjusting regenerative braking
The CarGurus verdict
On this first early encounter, the Renault Megane E-Tech Electric looks as though it's going to be an excellent family EV. It has the best infotainment software in the class, more sparkle to its handling than its closest rivals, promises better real-world efficiency than most, and there’s also loads of space in the cabin. There are some oddities to forgive: the very deep boot is a peculiar shape, the steering wheel is square, and there’s some dubious-looking wood-effect trim that featured on our test car. We’ll also have to wait for finalised pricing and trim levels, as well as a proper UK drive before we make any final judgements.
Even so, the new Megane E-Tech is shaping up to be the kind of car that will appeal to the head as well as the heart.
Cupra Born
Read the full written review of the Cupra Born: www.cargurus.co.uk/Cars/Cupra...
Pros
More entertaining to drive than most EVs
Long range with 77kWh battery
Sharp and stylish looks
Cons
Busy ride
Annoying touch-sensitive controls
Not as roomy as a Skoda Enyaq
The CarGurus verdict
The Cupra Born drives as well as it looks, and it's one of the most compelling electric cars if you’re after something that’s cheap to run but fun and stylish. It’s also a practical family hatchback and the purchase and running costs are comparable with its increasingly numerous rivals. The proliferation of annoying touch-sensitive controls is by far its greatest frustration.
It’s other big problem may well be the Renault Megane E-Tech, which has a better user interface and, we suspect, the edge for handling and ride comfort - a twin test awaits, to find out for sure. At the other end of the priority list, for anyone who values space more than handling and style, the Skoda Enyaq iV certainly offers more room for your money. For all that, the Cupra Born looks really great and drives well, and it’s very easy to see why you might fall for its hi-tech charms despite the plethora of competition.

Thats such a great analogy you gave 🙂. A few weeks ago II went for a test drive in an MG4 and then a few days later, had a test drive in the Megane ETech Tecno. The Megane is in another league completely, and I'll be collecting my one at the weekend.

A superb review from a very fine Motoring Journalists, who takes the very essence of the car and distills it into what makes it great.....Well done! I've just ordered the Top-of the -Range Iconic model (with that excellent Heat Pump). It was a straight choice between a Tesla Model 3 or the Megane, both were the same price.....No contest! The sterile, poor build quality, horrid interior, ugly Tesla is so dated compared to the Renault. It's tech is so 'yesterday'. Brilliant move by Renault going to the experts, Google! By the way, Renault say the 0-60 time is 7.5 Seconds. Independent tests have clocked it at 6.9 Seconds (that's Mini Cooper S territory).......how typically French, underplaying. Unlike the Italians, which always exaggerate!

Fair comments on cabin of megane. However i just bought a 64kw mg4 2023 for 19k. It actually is better and faster to drive, sorry megane. Megane has a lovely cabin and looks proper modern outside...but the rear windows are all tiny making it claustrophobic for my kids...mg4 for me.... cheaper car and faster and better to drive .....

Try both see what you think. I never thought I’d buy a French car. I was put off Born having had Seat with same infotainment. You can minimise the side panels of the ‘smaller’ screen in Renault. Don’t rule out the Renault until you drive it.

Out of these two my preference would by a whisker be the Renault. That extra boot space could be very useful for emergency bananas. Being front wheel drive in theory could be easier to control in slippery conditions although I've no idea what clever trickery is used in the Cupra to stop those pesky pirouettes that used to be a characteristic of rear wheel drive cars of yester year. The climate and mode controls also seem better in the E-Tech. A great video Rebecca as usual.

I can honestly say that anyone who's driven a Born or a ID3 on a icy morning has to be rather brave. I've had a Born for the last 2 years, and the traction control is capable but is easily vexxed by slippy road surfaces, even with winter tyres on. A few squeaky bum moments were had. I've got a Mégane on order, due for delivery in December, so I'll see how that does!

I Have had the V2 Born since July, now done 11500 mile mostly commuting 60miles a day. Got it with pan sunroof & heat pump. Charging at home on Octopus go 7.5p kwh 12:30 to 04:30 During the really cold weather just before Xmas was getting 145 range on 80% Today got 4.6mile/Kw temp outside this morning at 07:30am was 10 deg C. The most I got out of it was 5.7mile/kw on a A road route to work & back without using the motorway last summer! So it was 30 to 50mph with my regenerative breaking on max i.e. B mode So summer get aprox 220miles on 80% charge. I actually like the infotainment screen its 12" and I always use Android auto. Mine is white & everyone at work thinks it looks really nice! The buttons on the wheel are not as bad as reviewer have said I find them fine, yes on the odd occasion you can accidently touch them but nowhere near as they would have you believe! Overall I think the Car is really good! The only thing I would say is I have only charged once using a public charger on a trip to the lakes! I was fortunte enough to come across an ioniq charging station (120kw) up near Keswick! The only thing worries me is public charging! My colleague just came back from Norwich on a weekend trip in her Electric Corsa, the first charger they went to on the way there didn't work! the second had one bay occupied the other was occupied by a petrol car! " old dears explained they had a flat tyre and parked there! Even though there were plenty of other space on the car park! My colleague told them that there were clearly signs saying electric vehicles only! So she had to go and find another charging point! Seriously there should be camera's that record and fine peeps for this sort of thing! She eventually found a charge point! She told me it was stressful & took the pleasure out of owning an electric car! That made me think maybe Tesla was a better bet for public charging on long journeys! I will find out soon when I go on day trips as the weather gets better! My colleague also mentioned that the cost was more expensive than filling with petrol at public chargers she went on to say that she wished she had kept her Diesel! Hopefully things will improve as we approach 2030! What I can say so far charging just from home in the time i have owned the car it has save me aprox £1400 in 8 months! Service+fuel+road tax! So its started to pay back the differential. Do I enjoy driving it? yes No gears, smooth acceleration etc. Looks love it, charging network maybe choose a Tesla!

I have a Cupra Born for just over a month and I hate it. It's the prettiest car I've ever owned but it's a heap of shit to actually use. Climate settings are impossible to adjust while driving and i've not gone around a single roundabout or motorway junction without changing the settings on my Cruise control, outright dangerous car to drive. Further irritations: really bad view around the A-pillars, you can't see anything out of the rear window and the rear view camera is way to low to actually get a view on whats behind you plus it's ALWAYS dirty. Charging is bad too, it says it will do a 100kw for this battery but it actually won't go over 45kw. yes, it's cold now (November) but my previous Kia e-Niro would do at least 60, mostly just up to it's maximum of 75, albeit after a few minutes to warm up the system. Before you choose a car, don't look at the kw number, look at the charging curve, you can find tables for every make and model. It's not bad on efficiency but it's overestimating it's range constantly and not by a little bit. pros: prettiest car i've ever had good ride very silent good seats good stereo cons: rediculous infotainment system, there is no logic to be found here no thought ever went into useability in the interior not much space in the interior to put stuff bad interface design on steeringwheel bad interface design on infotainment rear windows are awkward to open and close as you have to press ANOTHER touch button to switch to rear window control, another few seconds you can't watch the road... rear view camera unusable automatic lights don't come on quick enough, don't recognise fog or low sun sunvisors are difficult to reach! (why!?) interior lights dont't come on when you open the doors (must be a setting somewhere but unable to find it, probably touched one of those touch buttons without knowing...) slower than expected really bad vision all around slow charging doesn't adjust range to actual usage (not nearly as good as others do) strange whining noise when wind comes from a certain angle! one pedal driving isn't a thing in the Cupra, nowhere near enough regenerating force (bad decision on the rear wheel drive probably as you can't apply that much braking) In short: typical VW product: all good in theory but only in testing circumstances, in real life it's not nearly as good as it's competitors

I have a grey born v1 with pretty much everything you need. Pros Smooth acceleration and great fun to drive Looks fab and gets lots of people staring Seats are great and you sit slightly higher than a regular hatch. I get 4.5mi/kwh in town and 3.1 on motorways. Cons Ride is a bit jumpy on uk roads apart from motorways when its fab Infotainment is a bit slow but not terrible I hate fact that everytime you enter the car you need to change settings it simply doesnt remember what you chose last time.

The Born tested in this video was the middle model in the range in terms of power, with 201bhp. With the Cupra Born, the power output available is dependent on the battery size you choose. 45-, 58- and 77kWh batteries are available. The smallest 45kWh battery gets a 148bhp motor, the middle 58kWh battery gets either a 201bhp or 228bhp motor, and the largest 77kWh battery comes with the 228bhp motor. I would say it was quite close between the two...Interior LOOKS better in the Cupra, but i think the Renault infotainment system makes up for the lesser interior looks quite a bit. Also the Megane has significantly larger boot space and the price. The pirce...The top level Megane is like 6000 euros cheaper than the top level Born, at least in my country (entry level is 4000 euros difference). Not sure if the Born is that much better to justify these differences. Having said that, I like the looks on the Born so much more that it almost justifies the difference in price for me.

I have had the e-tech Techno for just over a month and I am averaging about 3.3 Miles/kWh in Comfort mode with the heating set to Auto at 22'C (and the weather has not been great. Plenty of rain and below zero temps where I am). I don't hyper mile (at 56mph behind wagons etc) and drive normally doing the full speed limits (inc 60's & 70's on Dual Carriageways and Motorways). I don't think I'll have any issues hitting the 4's in terms of Mile/kWh when we get to summer and warmer weather. Hope this helps give you an Idea of the real world range. Edit: as the weather has crept above 0'c I'm getting a better Miles/kWh already. 3.7 and climbing. Definitely think the 4's will be easily hit during summer.

Your review is at odds with other reviews, which identify the fundamental difference between the cars, which is rear wheel drive versus front wheel drive. The Megane E-tech has a traction control which blunts initial acceleration to hide the torque steer. The RWD Cupra/ID.3 has no such problem. Karun Chandhok (ex F1 & Formula E Driver) says the ID.3 has very balanced handling that could take more power. Everyone I know who has bought an ID.3, including me are delighted with them.

I understand 'why' you're suggesting a 4-person, real-world test for a car - but have you ever seen a petrol / diesel car tested that way...? I know I haven't... I also appreciate that a LOT of electric vehicle reviews make comment that WLTP is WAY more optimistic than real-world range results - but, petrol / diesel car real-world mpg vs WLTP are also wildly inaccurate... For example, my wife's Yaris Hybrid is supposed to be able to do up to 85mpg combined. We've ran it now for 6 years and THE best ever figure I've ever got out of it is 61.3mpg...!
