Quite why it took Renault so long to dip its toe into the 4x4 market is open to conjecture but when it did, the Koleos model it brought to market wasn't a bad first stab. It was distinctively styled, rode well, wasn't priced unreasonably and ran on tried and tested Nissan-sourced mechanicals. By most accepted measures, the formula was right. But it flopped. Disastrously. What made an underwhelming new prospect can often make a corking used buy and the Koleos is no exception. Here's what to look for when hunting for a bargain used example.

In Australia, the Koleos came with two engines: A (Nissan sourced) 2.5 litre petrol engine with either a 6 speed manual transmission or a CVT . A (Renault sourced) 2 litre diesel engine with either a 6 speed manual or a 6 speed conventional auto. Many reviewers will state the 'auto' is a CVT, whereas that ONLY applies to the petrol engine. Both engines could be had with either front wheel drive or 4x4. The Renault diesel is very good, with 400,000km easily achieved with little more than regular servicing. They are very detuned in the Koleos and respond very well to diesel tuners with a dyno (like 33% improvement in torque). The Korean build quality is up there with modern Hyundais and Kias so they fell solid and nothing breaks. Koleos' don't seem to have DPF issues like many other diesel engines, but regular open road trips are needed.

We have a 2010 Koleos 2l, 6 speed stick change. Had to replace the dual mass clutch at around 108000km. Then at about 160000km there was subtle vibration which turned out to be the transfer gearbox for the 4 wheel drive that failed. The transfer box was removed and the hole was closed with a special plate, and the propshaft was removed. We also use the Koleos to pull a caravan, which I would NOT do with a CVT transmission. The Koleos aircon packed up now, Oct2023, the vehicle is going to the dealer for a quote for repair. I shall never buy a vehicle with a CVT transmission.

Would you say the manual transmission doesn't have that issue?

@@josefhospital the transfer box was disassembled, washed and checked. There are visible signs of bearing damage. The Koleos are running smoothly again. The problem with the aircon was the cabin fans 'resistor' box that had connector damage where 1 connector pin melted because of a hot connection. The connector was desoldered (removed) from the PCB and replaced with wires, connected directly to the harness, cabin fan and aircon is working good again.

@@deonmo1963 happy to hear that. Are you satisfied with the car overall? And a manual transmission doesn't have CVT right? Is it a better choice?

I had the same Koleos. Manual transmission. I was the proud owner... and today I regret when I see it in the pictures... I was the owner 7 years. I've never had a big problem with it... I think it's the best car in terms of investment-gain.

Well yes, it could. The duel mass 'clutch' he is referring to is actually the duel mass flywheel. If you have a manual, it could fail. This issue is not confined to just Renault engines. It is quite common on most modern cars. @@josefhospital
