Renato Canova, Julien Wanders, Amanal Petros - Monster Uphill Long Run

"We do this to build muscle, but also the mind." - Renato Canova
Iten is perched on the edge of the Great Rift Valley, with over 1000m of drop to the valley floor. This 30km run starts at the bottom and winds its way back up to town. It's a beast of a hill, and at altitude as well.
This is a tough one!

The amount of power your muscles have to produce just to tackle those mighty hills is no fckin joke running constant uphill is much more strenuous on your body than flat running. And these elites are doing it with such grace and ease is just commendable and mesmerising. Kudos to Angus for putting all the hard work running uphills that to off-road with camera just to bring us quality quality stuff. 🙌🏾

Watching this reminded me a lot of the mountains in the tdf and it got me thinking why and how running doesn’t have an equivalent to it. The season is essentially never-ending in running and it causes a lot of athlete storylines to be diluted because they take so long to progress. If we had a tournament similar to the tdf storylines could develop so much quicker. Have different stages according to distance, terrain, recovery time, elevation, etc like the tour. It definitely caters to volume-focused guys, but having different events over the span of a few weeks would be so sick. If it got enough hype to where elites would train for it, maybe world athletics would sponsor it, teams would come into play, etc it could be the pinnacle of the sport. The Olympics suck because commentators and broadcasters don’t care about distance running, diamond league sucks because nobody outside of running watches, worlds suck for the same reason. Meanwhile the tdf is done so well that I, someone who cares nothing about cycling, watches hundreds of dudes ride bikes for a month straight. Why did I type that out wow that took so long

Angus @sweatelite, I think you should stop turning the camera on yourself during the filming. The voiceover / you talking during the video to explain what is happening works just fine without taking the focus away from the athletes. Camera Operators / Documentarians don't usually feature themselves so prominently in their work. Matt Fox really is a great role model in that regard. You can hear him just fine, you know that he is right there with the athletes and that he is super engaged with everything they say and do, but he isn't ever on screen. The exception is the sub-elite videos that he has made... but that is different because he's running in those videos and he was up front about being reluctant to do them. I get that it is super exciting to be there in Iten with all these World class athletes... I'm jealous... but we are here for the athletes. Let your work do the talking and point that camera consistently in the right direction. With love!
