@@ginmit3383 The method definitely works if you follow his steps precisely it worked for me and still works to this day. However, I faced issues when updating my Calibre to version 7.15.0. Fortunately, I still had version 7.12.0 in my downloads folder. I just had to uninstall Calibre and reinstall the older version, which then allowed me to convert my Kindle books to PDF again and avoid seeing the DRM message. I suggest checking which version of Calibre you have. If you're on the latest version, it has most likely been patched, but with version 7.12.0, I'm able to bypass the DRM message. Hope this helps.

Can someone tell me how to get the kindle serial number?

I don't use a Kindle device, so I'm stuck at the step to add in the kindle serial number.

Just tried this today and Calibre tells you that it can't convert it, then sends you to a site to say why it's illegal to remove DRM protection.

I assume this method doesn't work if you don't actually have a kindle? Ie how do you get a kindle serial if you don't have a kindle? Do the kindle phone apps have a serial you can use with this?

Thank you for this video! I've been trying to move my library away from Amazon for a while but have been putting off Calibre because I was intimidated by the process. This was super easy to follow!

Only catch here is that you need a physical Kindle device to do this thing. I personally like to keep my study books organized in Apple Books so being able to remove DRM from my Kindle is a real blessing

There is no option to download the books from Amazon.

Yes, once you strip the DRM, you convert it to the format of your ebook reader.

Something is off. You can't put the serial # in the Calibre until you buy it, so, shouldn't you have the buy it info first and then we can find the serial #? The books usually download to the kindle desktop reader. Old days it would tell us we had to open it on the ereader first and then we could upload it to calibre. Are you saying we no longer need to do this? Are you working from a laptop or an android? My Kindle for PC has no serial no. only version number so, every image you showed does not match the current versions.

It's the Kindle serial number that you put in, not the Calibre serial number. Of course, you have to own a Kindle for this to work. And it does work.

Does this work for Apple purchased books in iBooks? I followed all the steps and it is not working. Please, can you assist on what I am doing wrong?

I dont have a physical kindle, but have the app on my computer and iphone. When I go to click download and transfer via USB i get the same message "You do not have any compatible devices registered for this content. Buy a Kindle or get the free Kindle reading app." I have tried so many things but i cannot download the file. Do I absolutely need a physical kindle device to unlock this capability!?

You need to download the kindle software for your PC (not sure if you have an mac) . But I'm pretty sure you need to have a physical kindle device.

Find out where the books are stored on your computer, copy them to a temporary folder on your desktop, then proceed from there. Worked on both my Mac and Windows PC’s…

Good question. I don't believe it does (due to different DRM protection used) but I haven't tested it. May give it a try if I see enough interest.

DeDRM doesn't work with the latest Amazon e-books. An example is Three-Inch Teeth. (The latest novel by C.J. Box. ) DeDRM 10.0.3 and the beta, 10.0.9, both give messages stating "This book is locked by DRM".

@@howtodostuff. Thanks for the reply. Yes, I plugged in my serial number. I've used Calibre and DeDRM for a number of years and have successfully downloaded and converted many books with it. However, it seems that recent Amazon releases, by some authors, have a new type of DRM not mitigated by DeDRM. I was hoping that 10.0.3 or the beta would fix the problem but they do not. I may have to try the trial version of epubor to see if it works.

Interesting because I am succesfull in removing DRM, even with my most recent purchases. I guess they may be applying some new versions DRM protections to some of the books only. Thanks for the info!

I believe so, yes. That being said, the best way would be to download the book directly from Amazon as per the video. Even if you don't have Kindle device registered, it should allow you to download the file.

Unfortunately this doesn't work if your Kindle device is a PC. The Amazon account doesn't show any serial number. Worth a try but DRM really pisses me off!

Check out the help menu in the DeDRM plugin. It says 'Configuration On Windows and Mac, the keys for ebooks downloaded for Kindle for Mac/PC and Adobe Digital Editions are automatically generated. If all your DRMed ebooks can be opened and read in Kindle for Mac/PC and/or Adobe Digital Editions on the same computer on which you are running calibre, you do not need to do any configuration of this plugin.'

Hi Patrick, sorry to hear the steps didn't work. Based on comments, it seems people have mixed results but the process still works for me. That being said, I suspect Amazon may be implementing newer/different DRM protections to newer books. I assume you purchased the affected book and not using borrowed books via Kindle Unlimited? Could you try other purchased books; are they also failing? I also have an older video where I use older version of 'Kindle for PC' app, download book via the app and upload it to Calibre+DRM plugin. You could review that option and see if it gives a better result. I hope this helps!

There are 2 ways: 1. Directly from Kindle: go to Quick Actions Menu (3 dots at the top right corner) -> Settings -> select 3 dots again and choose 'Device Info' . Serial number is listed there. 2. If your Kindle is registered with Amazon account you purchased the book from, go to Amazon.com -> Manage Your Content and Devices -> select ' Devices ' tab -> select your Kibdle and click on the Kindle's name -> a screen will show with Serial number. Hope this helps!

This is not working and it's so frustrating. I've spent the whole afternoon looking for videos and talking with artificial intelligence, but every option seems to be a dead end. Why can't someone explain this well? If you have a kindle ereader you just have to go to settings, then device information, from there you can access your kindle serial number☺️

What if you don't own a kidnle e-reader?

Easier and useful tips 1 - obtain Calibre Portable and install it to a Dropbox/OneDrive cloud storage folder and you'll have your library and the apl in the cloud 2 - Kindle for PC up to particular versions can download your books locally for you in a format that DeDRM can strip DRM from and convert. 3 - set Calibre to auto convert any book it finds in the Kindle Book library that the Kindle for PC app downloaded 4 - obtain the kfx input plugin to allow for newer kfx file conversion

Does not work for me, having a Sony PRS-650 and a .epub file, thanks anyway!

Mid May 2024 and the DeDRM Plug in will not load into Calibre no matter how carefully the instructions are followed.

It didn't work. Locked by DRM. Even with the serial number. (Used plugin DeDRM 10.0.3)

This method isn't foolproof, I have had at least 10 books so far be rejected for having DRM and not being able to convert them into a different format. Edit: as of 7/30 only 4 out of 100 books worked, I keep getting a "this book is DRM protected" error.
