    Tyre fitters the world over do this. Here in the UK it's just the same. Also they never use anti-seize compound on the threads, so they can rust and then seize.

    For spline style lug nuts which are very common on aftermarket wheels - Count the splines on the lug nut - most common is 7 spline or 6 spline... Look up the lug stud size - 12mm, 1/2", 14mm or 9/16" is most common. Narrow those variables down and boom there's your tool.. For extra clarification compare the o.d. of the lug nut to the i.d. of the tool - no specs on the tool dimensions? Compare the hex size at the top of the tool to the o.d. of the bottom. 19mm or 3/4" hex of the tool looks slightly bigger than the o.d. of the tool? ... Chances are that the o.d. of the lug nut is about 17mm or 11/16".. instead of buying a bunch of tools a little bit of measuring saves a headache, time, and money.

    Duuude, thanks so much! I bought a used car that had aftermarket wheels and got a flat tire and had to pay $500 for them to cut it off and reweld it back together :( Hopefully I'll be able to fine the right stuff I need to avoid this new time, cuz another one of my tires has a nail in it and $500 is a LOT of money :/ (and that's not including the price of a new tire!)

    Thanks for the video!!!! Locknuts are some of the WORST things to deal with. Had a situation where the locknut key BROKE!!! Then the locknuts became stripped! Real nightmare. I will never, ever, ever, ever use locknuts again for ANYTHING. Go ahead ... steal my tries. it's better than spending hours in locknut hell trying to get the things off when things don't go right.

    Here in the UK, most locking lug nuts are completely round, I bought a set of special sockets from eBay a few years ago to remove my locking nuts because I had lost the key and they work brilliantly! They work by having a reverse cutting thread inside the socket and as you rotate the socket anti-clockwise it bites into the outside of the locking lug nut until it tightens and undoes the nut. This nut can remain in the socket and be removed by threading it onto a bolt or stud clamped in a vice / vise and be replaced by a regular lug nut on the wheel.

    Here's a tip to make a regular hex socket work. Cut a piece of wire that fits in the corner of the hex of the socket and will slide in slot of the locking nut. Today I McGyvered this solution to undo the nuts on my wife's D-max's mags that were on to tight for the socket to turn without slipping. You would think she would have the proper tool?....Yeah Right!When I went looking there was only the jack, no handle or tools, how would she wind down the spare. I suppose that's what husband's are for???

    Since these are spline drive lugs and not locking lug nuts, all you have to do is go to your local auto parts store and just buy a new socket. If you don't know the exact size, just buy two or three sizes and return the ones that don't fit and keep the one that did fit. Too easy.

    Yes...lots of experience needed to know where to look eh. You cannot use most of these cheats on wheels with smaller holes where there is only a few mm space between the nut and the sides.

  • @montinaladine3264
    @montinaladine32642 жыл бұрын

    Pretty easy when you have acres of space between the locknut and the wheel body. My wheel is very small here, the locknut is a tight fit inside the lug nut space.

    I watched so many videos trying to figure this out!!! Just wanna leave a note if you’re reading the comments and your car is still driveable. My sis recommended I talk to my repair shop, since I had had the tires changed there before. I called them up and they said they didn’t have the part in stock but a place like Les Schwab does keep them in stock and I could buy it right off the shelf. Went to Les Schwab, they took a quick look, brought back a wheel lock key and checked to make sure it fit, then charged me $6.55 for the part. Took less than five minutes. Done!!! Thanks sis 😘

    4:43 a simmaler method does in fact work with round locking nuts. Find the size that barely fits over it then buy a sacrificial socket that is a size lower. Using a rubber mallet and someone with a breaker bar to hold it in place hammer it on at least an 8th of an inch. Then as one person slowly turns the breaker bar the other continues to hammer on the socket. This saved me the headache of needing to wait a week for a removal kit as none were in stock where I was at the time. Edited for grammar.

    So, ours had the key but the thing was stripped. It tightens, but won't loosen. However, ours is a Mazda and it's a perfectly smooth cylinder - no splines or anything... so it looks like I'll be trying to cut a groove into this thing.

    I have viewed numerous videos on this topic. It appears that all are oblivious to the real problems of unlocking such a nut. Against all odds it really happens when you expect it the least: midnight, middle of nowhere, alone and the weather is, as usual, atrocious ...Where shall you find tools and gadgets? Somehow, nobody but nobody ever talked about this ... or may be, I live on a different planet ...My solution is the simplest: Buy a spare key and put it with someone who can bring it to you ... Yes, you can order and get a spare key or buy two identical sets ... And that is a workable solution ...
