It's not showing any of that location data because GPS takes several minutes to initialize the first time to scan and lock on to sats and then update its almanacs to be able to provide precision coordinates. Also, you don't want to put this on a switch or turn it off, just cover the module and antennas with aluminum foil. You'll still be on and transmitting legally under compliance, you'll just have an almost unusable transmission range for anyone looking to hunt you down.

Such a shame that the Karen app doesn’t work any better than that 😂👍

Anything over 250 grams must be tracked..except a 550lb ultralight trike, no tracking needed on those. Makes sense. 🐂 💩

First and foremost, we strongly advise against attaching antennas to any carbon or steel-like materials, due to potential interference issues. Your flight did not comply with RID regulations because the BS did not acquire a GNSS fix. Compliance is achieved only when the BS obtains a GNSS fix and has a blinking white LED, indicating readiness for flight. Our standard wire antennas are compact, which can lead to a delay in acquiring a GNSS fix, necessitating a waiting period. It is necessary, before the first takeoff, to upload Assisted GNSS data through our app. You can find the process in the instructions provided in the BS manual. It is required to do this before the first flight and we recommend doing this step before each flight. This will streamline the GNSS acquisition and transition the BS into flight mode, ensuring compliance with regulations. Lastly, it's essential to keep the Dronetag application up to date to prevent crashes and ensure smooth operation.

I've used Air Sentinel and Drone Scanner with mixed results. I've tested it with the Mini 3 Pro, Avata, DJI FPV & 2 Holystone RID units. Hit & miss on the apps detecting the RID units.

When my daughters were young..I told them BS meant boy stuff..lol

Ken, I'm so salty! So I just obtained my 107 certification after September 16th. I have a mini I was going to use for yt content. Now bc I want to fly under 107 I can't without a holy stone external rid module. Which is going to kill my battery life. And the faa literally told me thus is their definition is intent to comply. Meaning if dji intended to release a firmware update that would make the mini compliant then I would be in compliance but as of now they don't so they are forcing me to over work batteries that aren't designed to carry anything extra and basically make me spend 1k on a new drone.. but yet recreational hobbyists can still fly over the Ohio football stadium during a TFR because he bought it the day before and wanted to see how far it would go!!!!

Petition to force "Drone Scanner" app to officially change their name to "The Karen App" so people using it unironically are forced to lean into their true identity...

First time GPS turns on it typically takes a while to get it's initial lock. Some have an internal RTC to help

For the antenna lenghts: Bluetooth & WiFi operate at 2.4 GHz, GPS at 1,6 GHz. Thisfor the antenna for the GPS = lower frequency has to be longer. The Antenne length should be at least a quarter of the wavelength of the signal which gives some 31 mm for BT and 47 mm for GPS. Anyway the GPS will probably have bad reception with only a cable for antenna. They usually have a patch antenna for a reason. Another issue will be the TTFF (time to first fix). Every GPS module needs some time for getting its position. It may take some minutes to get the position. And here's a catch: a moving GPS module has severe problems to get a fix, for fast acquisition the module should have a fixed position. This contradicts the whole usage scenario. You probably will see no position for many flights you do. This is so ridicolous. When People without technical expertise make laws. This is total BS for sure. Regulators gone mad, overshooting it by far. Living in Europe I am lucky there is the class of "legacy" and self built drones that just have to obey certain rules linke keeping a 150 m distance to residential or industrial areas and 30 m to people. What the US regulators did will perhaps shrink the drone hobby down to a shadow of what it was and could have been if there was some basic knowledge in the brains of the people who make legal decisions. Bad. Very bad.

I bought the FlightTest one. It’s bigger than it really needs to be but came with a connector to plug into the balance connector of flight packs. I have been using it but getting it attached to the quad every flight, since I only have one and mount it on top of the batteries, is annoying. What’s frustrating is that any of us using ELRS probably already have the hardware needed to broadcast remote ID as long as we also have GPS installed. I put GPS on all my 5” builds and smallest build I have with GPS is 3”.

The biggest issue I have with Remote ID is the Karen Factor. Why did they make it so easy for the general public to see where the pilot location is? Idiotic and un neccessary!

THIS IS A BUNCH OF BS So now that I’ve purchased a strobe so I can see my gray mini it would put me over 249 grams and require registration thus requiring government surveillance avionics (RID) to be installed. So by not installing the strobe to enhance safety I don’t need registration and RID. Yeah that makes it safer. Government idiocy at work.

I think it's best to protect these fragile antennas with a carbon fiber tubing, for additional safety. If these interfere with the props, it might crash, and safety above all, right? The potentially reduced signal range of the Remote ID signal is totally worth the additional safety.

@@davidleigh6196 So that means that you would be in compliance, as you have remote ID fitted, but it will be near impossible for others to track your drone and retrieve the location of the pilot. How highly unfortunate. ;-)

The wireless modules in most of these I have seen are using ESP32 variants. They cost 2-3 dollars and the pcb around 25-50 cents. Also very little cost in assembly. So yea the manufacturers are making a killing off the remote ID module. Eventually the ardupilot remote ID using the ESP32 variant will have a MOC cert and be wide spread. Price should come down to 10-15 dollars.

I have the BS, was curious about adding the switch. From what I can tell, it resets the location of the pilot if switched off and on again to wherever the quad is when you hit the switch. In the end it doesn’t relay any useful info other than the serial number, which is all anyone needs to cook your ass anyway. But adding the switch gives you an incognito mode so probably a decent idea.

cool vid Ken....I doubt I'll ever build my own due to TMS lifestyle....it's cool to know there are companies out there helping....RID is just the FAA covering their ass....since we live in a democracy, and it's hard to know who will sue who for what anymore...the gvt entities need a disclaimer or rule in place of some kind.....surely the rule would not be abused....we all know the police never run your license plate info without warrant...👀RID seems to be a bit unconstitutional when compared to similar laws....
