Remote and Off-Grid Living | A Day in the Life (with a baby)

On a remote subtropical island, somewhere on earth, you'll find our off grid homestead. We live in an old stone house, with three children, and produce our own electricity, water, and vegetables. With Shetland Geese, Chickens, Guinea Fowl, and two cats to care for, we're slowly transforming 5 acres of wild land into edible gardens. We have 15+ years of experience living this way, so we know a thing or two about how to make off grid living work through our own failures.
We would be really grateful for any support through our Ko-Fi page, or subscribe to our Patreon, so that we can save money for future projects.

Thank you for sharing some beautiful and raw momenta of the life you all share on Flores. Myself and two friends have just landed on Faial looking to create a homestead, it's so inspiring to see others who are well on their way of this needed journey, reconnection to simplicity and nature.

hi! i just stumbled across your channel while on the hunt for more info about the Açores, as my husband and I are considering moving there! Your videos are so beautiful and peaceful 😊🌸 We want to purchase land and have our own homestead too! Do you think Flores is the best island to live on, especially for off-grid / homestead living? may God bless you! 😊🌸🙏💛

Hi 😊 well, the island is absolutely beautiful and many consider Flores to be the most beautiful island in the Azores. It depends how much you are prepared to give up though.... if we were just beginning to set up an off grid homestead, I don't think we would choose to live on this island. We rely completely on our hydro system, which is not as easy to set up as solar panels. We are also having to diversify our electricity sources: better hydro, more solar, and a wind turbine. Easily done if you have access to resources. However, the Port situation means locals are left without supplies for a long time, and the last two Winters were mild. We have a feeling this next Winter could be incredibly stormy, and the remaining break wall of the Port will just be wiped out completely. Poverty levels are rising here, and businesses are struggling because they don't get consistent supplies. This island is so, so beautiful in summer, but in Winter - the inability to have access to resources makes life here pretty bleak for many, and it scares us that Flores island may become cut off completely. I think, if you can find the land and property, Sao Miguel is the best island to live on. But, if you are up for a serious challenge - Flores Island is the best for more natural living 🌳💚

With the amount of rain and organic matter on the ground there you dont need to aply any compost at all to the gardens.
