Remo Rototoms
Ah, momentarily dipping your toes back into the '80s can be a satisfying experience.
I bought my first set of Remo Rototoms (the 6, 8, 10-inch set) somewhere around 1979 or 1980. My drum teacher explained that they offered a great, inexpensive way to expand your set. And he was right. All of a sudden I had (almost) enough drums to do some Neil Peart fills.
A few years later, I saw Terry Bozzio's Rototom set with Missing Persons, and I wanted more. I picked up 12 and 14-inch Rotoms somewhere around 1983.
Anyway, I sold the 12/14-inch set at some point, but then bought a replacement set about 15 years ago. So here they all are, along with a DW pancake gong drum. In the past, I've used CS black dot heads on them and Pinstripes. I kind of like the Pinstripes on the lower ones but Ambassadors on the higher ones. I've put coated Ambassadors on them all here mainly because I like the way they look. (I first saw Jon Farriss of INXS using coated Ambassadors on his Rototoms in the '80s.) And while I often use a clear PowerStroke 3 on the pancake gong drum, I switched to a coated version here.
Here’s a newer Rototom video in which I compare a few different types of heads: • Remo Rototoms: Drumhea...
Equipment used in this video:
-6, 8, 10, 12, 14-inch Remo Rototoms
-20-inch DW pancake gong drum
-20-inch DW kick drum, and 6.5 x 14-inch DW nickel over brass snare
-Zildjian New Beat hi hats and K Zildjian Pre-Aged Light Ride (there's a K china in the initial photo, but I swapped it out for a ride in the video)
-Blue Hummingbird overhead mics
-AKG D112 kick mic
-Shure SM57 snare mic
-Apogee Element 88 interface
-Apple Logic Pro
-Fujifilm X100T camera
-iMovie

Always loved Rotos and how they cut in in a mix...
Your rotos sound great!
I I just added 3 roto toms to my Mapex kit. I always liked them. I like em better with clear heads though.
Love your choice of heads and cymbals. Sounds great. Thanks for writing an actually in depth and quality description, cant seem to dind many of those these days.
1st thing I thought of was the drum fill in the song I'll wait by Van Halen.🤘

Figuring out where to put those damn 6, 8, 10's is a bear when you are playing a double bass pedal, and you also have a cymbal stand and hi-hats, plus that little cowbell rig you got set up there and your snare drum stand. It a LOT of trial and error to finally get it right. I attached the straight arm to the stand all the way over to the left, and set up the drums to the right of it. A little top heavy and wobbly, but after cutting the top of the hi-hat stand rod off, I got it to work.
Nice kick drum sound.

So fun!!! I like the DW pancake as a floor tom!!!
after watching this I immediately bought the heads you're using to put on my rotos. These sound absolutely amazing

Sweet. Yeah, they really resonate. Although I also liked the look of the black dots that people used to use with these back in the day. Someday I'll buy five black dot heads and see if they sound any good to my much-older ears.
Your toms sound great, your rolls sound even better. Tasty my man!
Very good choices
Sweet setup! Must be great to play. And that 20” serving as your floor tom. Thanks for sharing.
What a genius sound 👍
In the past i ve had roto Toms with pin stripe😀👍
Fabulous sound and playing . Bozzio /Bruford .

Nice! I had an all roto tom set in 1980, 6-8-10-12-14-16-18, with a clear Vistalite kick, and recently got some 'off brand' roto toms, 6 through 14, that were surprisingly nice for the money. The one mounted tom just didn't do it for me any more.

As if the 16 and 18-inch Rotos didn't show enough commitment to the "modern" aesthetic of 1980, the Vistalite kick surely did!

@@schmargle It was practical, too. Easier to transport than even a couple of traditional toms, and the rotos cut through nicely without a ton of resonance muddying things up.

@@HamptonGuitars how did you transport these ? I would like to buy some, but I'm afraid of their weight

Yeah, that's a good one, and I love the way his toms sound on that tune. Somewhere in the '80s I thought about getting concert toms like Phil generally used-mainly because they were a little less expensive than double-headed toms. But I held out!
good sound!!!!!!!
Pra forró elétrico atual eletrônico, é show de bola!🎵🎶👍😬
I had some Rototoms back in the day. The only way I could make them sound decent (to me) was I had to crank up the 6, 8, & 10 inch toms so tight that the heads would start pulling away or out of the drumhead hoops.
@schmargle

That's cranked! It's definitely tougher to tune them low. I always found, especially with the 12 and 14-inch ones, that if you went too low, you just heard crackly head noise. Moving to Pinstripes for the lower ones helped, kind of.
Reminds me Bill Bruford
what are the drumhead mounted on the rototoms ? simple ambassadors ?
@schmargle

Yes, they are all Remo Ambassador Coated heads. I've found that Pinstripes can also sound good, especially for the lower Rotos.

Once long ago... in a land far far into the 80s... the Rototoms were the poor mans way to build a drum set.

The rack should've been curved. The playing position would've been so much more natural.

Oh, totally. And actually, back in the '80s, I had my Roto-toms mounted with RIMS mounts so I could use standard mounting rods to position them more freely around the kit. I sold the RIMS mounts, but I wish I hadn't, because whenever I play the Rotos now, I have to use those straight mounting bars, which make them really difficult to position.
Good
It sounds great, where can I order the rototoms from?

I think many music stores still sell the 6, 8, and 10-inch set. But the 12 and 14-inch set can be harder to find.

These are Remo Coated Ambassadors. I like they way they resonate, especially on the higher Rotos. For the lower ones, I also like Pinstripes, which let you get some nice deep, fundamental tones.
Only the pancake drum lacks resonance.

Totally. I need to experiment more with that one. Maybe I just have to tune it high or try different heads.
