Remo Rototoms with Fiberskyn drumheads? Let's try it.

Музыка

A little while back I did a video comparing different heads on Remo Rototoms ( • Remo Rototoms: Drumhea... ). Recently one of you asked if I had ever tried faux calfskin heads on them, and I hadn't. But I often use Remo Ambassador Fiberskyn heads on my toms, so I thought I'd try those on my Rotos. The verdict? Well, have a listen.
0:00 Main video
2:39 Overhead mics only (briefly)
3:42 Tuning the 14" Rototom down (and hearing rattles)
I like the Fiberskyns on my regular toms because they have a slightly muted, round sound with a nice fundamental pitch. And with the pitches I tune to, they have a nice head tension. They're less flabby than, say, a straight Coated Ambassador. On Rotos? They probably wouldn't be my first choice. I tend to like the slightly more plastic-y sound on my Rotos, almost like an electronic drum from the '80s. So for that sound, I'd probably use a Remo CS (Controlled Sound) Clear Black Dot or a Remo Pinstripe head. ...Still, on the higher-pitched Rotos, the Fiberskyns sound fine to me. And I do still like the head tension with the lower ones (12" and 14"). Overall, they sound more like standard toms with these heads on, which is fine, if that's OK with you.
I will say that the 14" with the Fiberskyn doesn't give me quite enough of that "doooong" tone that I like with the more plastic-y heads. And as you'll see in the video, when you tune it low, the Roto rattles like crazy. Of course, in my opinion, it's really pretty difficult for any head to sound great on the lower Rotos without tuning the Roto up. But if you do that, you won't have a great spread of notes across all the toms.Anyway, enjoy.

Echoes of the drum sound on Pearl Jam’s ’W.M.A.’ Around the 2-minute mark. Love it! I use Skyntones on my regular toms, but have always fancied Roto toms after seeing Queen’s Roger Taylor use them. Would never have thought to pair them up! Great vid 👍

Very nice "organic" sound with those heads, a lot less bright than the clearer heads.

Yeah. Sounds quite similar to frame drums. So this will be great for a folk or tribal sound. Don't think I'd use it as my main tom sound. But defiantly a good add on.

I prefer the tone to the standard clears, the downside is the bubbling that'd occur with heavy use.

Interesting-I've never had that bubbling. But maybe I retire heads sooner.

    How did you mount those?!

I use RIMS mounts. That way I can position them like regular toms. To me, the straight Rototom rack is too limiting. The downside of using RIMS is that you lose the ability to tune them just by turning them. But if you add a nut to the bolt down near the bottom, you can still tune them by reaching under and turning the clamp/lever thing.

U can also use a Tama boom holder with a 3/8 carriage bolt, a flat washer and a nut. I have a 6 inch -18 inich ( 7 rotos total) on a rack system. I also have (2) 18 inch rotos for bass drums but they don't have enough bottom. I have replaced those with a 20 inch bass drum

With this method of mounting, they can be tuned by turning them as if they were mounted on a roto Tom black slotted rack
