They made the game look so easy. Morgan to Concepcion(or vise versa)was a virtual double play. I have never seen a better all around second baseman in baseball.

I was a high school and then college 2nd baseman in the mid-70s. Joe was my idol, even adopting that quirky "flapping" of my arm when I batted. "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" I guess? As a native San Diegan I've been a Padres fan since their inception but the chance to watch the "Big Red Machine" come to town and to see my idol at 2nd base was an opportunity that I rarely, if ever missed even if it meant watching the home team get their clock cleaned. What a player. Thank you for the great memories., Joe.

As a 13 year old kid in western Canada I watched all seven games of the World Series and became a Joe Morgan fan. Although I was quite new to baseball at that time it became quite apparent to myself that Joe was indeed special. In 2004 after listening to the final out of the World Series Joe (who was working with Jon Miller on the radio broadcast) said something I found to be quite poignant. He congratulated the Boston Red Sox on their saying he was fortunate to play on two World Series champions himself. Joe concluded by telling the players to enjoy the experience and that it is something that no one can take away from you. Thanks for everything Joe Morgan! May you RIP.

Joe Morgan - CLASS! If only the players of today would copy great men of character like him! I'm an Orioles fan, and when he was on the Philly's in the World Series, of course, I was cheering for the Birds. In game 5, Joe was on third base. A fly-ball to the outfield should have scored their only run as Joe was tagging up, but he stumbled and fell, and had to go back to third. That was the only time I felt bad for someone not being able to score against the team I was pulling for. There are people who go beyond, "But he's not on my team," stuff. Joe was class personified. He, and men like him, will be missed. And if any of his family should see this, my prayers are with you!

First it was the pitcher who pitched the only perfect game in a World Series, then it was Mr. Tiger, then Tom Terrific, then one of the greatest base stealers in baseball, then his teammate who pitched 17 strike outs in a World Series and became the only pitcher to win 2 MVP awards, then another pitcher who pitched 33 ⅔ scoreless innings in a World Series while winning 25 and losing 4 during the M&M Boys '61 team, and now one of the greatest (if not the greatest) second baseman of all time who was also a back-to-back NL MVP and one of the key main players in Cincinnati's Big Red Machine? We are losing baseball legends (who are also HOF's) this year! Damn. Note: RIP to Joe Morgan.

Only one could be mentioned, though not having the same power (Rod Carew). As the years progressed, a 'White-haired fella' came from Cincinnati to manage my Tigers...Only to mold a young second baseman into another Joe Morgan named 'Sweet' Lou Whitaker (not quite, but close: 268 HR v. 244 HR .271 BA v. .276 BA). I was there when Joe Morgan won Game 3 of the 1975 World Series shortly after Fisk and Armbrister collided. He singled to drive in the winning run in the last of the tenth. Funny thing: He drew a ton of walks, he stole a great many bases, he hit a lot of doubles, triples, and home runs, but it's two "nice, polite singles" in the 1975 that people remember most fondly. We will always remember the Game 7 single that put the Reds up for good in Game 7's 9th inning. Thank you, Joe Morgan for all the great memories you've given us, and thank you, too, Gloria and the rest of his family, for sharing Joe Morgan with us. We'll always miss him.

I remember as a young kid (9yrs-1964), marveling at a cover of an issue of the weekly Sports Illustrated, which had the shortstop Sonny Jackson and second baseman Joe Morgan turning a double play. Blew my mind- it showed Jackson airborne, to avoid the sliding baserunner, while relaying the throw to first base. That impression never left me since- as a youth playing baseball, the pivot at second base for a double play, was the coolest looking thing in baseball.

I had a beagle named I named Morgan when I was a kid in the 70s , because Joe was my favorite player . I think Joe Morgan was the most complete ballplayer in the national league at the time. He was fast, a smart base runner and stealer, a gold glove fielder and a clutch power hitter. The Reds had MVPs up and down the lineup but Morgan could do everything

50 something white man from Alabama here. He was a great player during my childhood but I will remember him as the only guy who could get me to watch any game (even Yankees games) because he was in the booth. Loved that guy.

I just looked, I didn't realize Morgan didn't join the Reds until 1972. I was an Orioles fan in 1970, they beat the Reds in the 1970 World Series. That roster brought back a lot of memories. Bench, Perez, Concepcion, Lee May, Bernie Carbo, Pete Rose, Bobby Tolan, Clay Carroll, Bo Belinsky, I still have most of them on baseball cards from when I was a kid, including Joe Morgan. Rest in Peace and thanx for the memories!

In November of 1971 Morgan was traded from the Astros to the Reds in exchange for Lee May. There were others involved but those were the two main cogs.

@@Shindler39 ......I think you're correct about that but the Reds were a World Series team (1970) before that trade was made. I guess Morgan made the difference between winning the Series and losing it. It wasn't a bad trade for the then lowly Astros either. After acquiring Lee May and Tommy Helms the Astros immediately had the first two winning seasons they'd ever had in their brief history. Then Houston traded May for Enos Cabell and later traded Helms for Art Howe. Cabell and Howe were both instrumental in the Astros' first era of success (1979-81) which included the 1980 NL West division title. All in all I would agree that the Reds came out ahead in that trade but it wasn't as one-sided as baseball historians have made it out to be.

@@chuckwest7045 Great point, when that trade was made it was view as a bad trade for the Reds except for Manager Sparky Anderson who tought it was a great trade for them and he was finally right.
