Remembering Beirut

Today, we remember the 299 French and American Marines, Sailors and Soldiers who died on this day in 1983 when terrorists attacked the Marine barracks in Beirut, Lebanon, and recall those who worked tirelessly in the days following the attack. In 2020, General David H. Berger and Sergeant Major Troy E. Black reflected on their memories of that day, and the exceptional efforts of the Marines in the aftermath of the attack.

I was a young Lance Corporal on exercise in Korea in 1983 when that happened. Trust me when I say that many us Marines we’re hurt and highly upset when that happened. We wept for our fellow marines and honestly wanted retaliation. I remember seeing the photos and reading the articles coming from there. I haven’t forgotten.

Yes excellent point. The Marines had no valid reason or purpose for being in Beriut Lebanon so long. Marines are first responder, nothing else. We come in and come right back out. Not to stay. To stay is NOT a job description of being Marines. If this dumb Regan wanted to occupy any place in Beirut Lebanon Regan should have sent the UN not Marines. This is to show all how incompetent the so called "leaders" of the USA were back then and are today also. Improper use of military personnel in Beriut Lebanon and all over the World. This is why USA Citizens do not want to join the USA military. So the USA has to import none USA Citizens to serve in the USA military. Sad!

Special Forces Soldiers from the 10th SFG(A) had an MTT on the ground in Beirut at the time of the incident. Members of the CI Section, MI Company, conducting force protection operations for the SF Unit had advanced warning of the attack and pushed it up the chain. The Marine Chain of Command in Beirut at the time elected to ignore the warning. The sentries on duty at the time had no ammunition for their weapons. 243 Marines died that day. Vanity oh, vanity. RIP 🙏

  • @calopenshaw3510

I was there and those Special Forces pukes couldn't find their own ass with two hands and a compass. Proof of that was when four of them got lost out in the 'ville because they went for a drive without a map and we had to go look for them. They finally got back, minus all their gear and weapons which were confiscated by one of the militias out in the hills. I was also there when our XO chewed their asses for having their heads up said asses. They weren't conducting force protection, they were training the LAF. We don't use Army pukes to protect us, especially green beanies. They were a small, ineffective presence who had no connection to the MNF mission. There was no advance warning because they didn't have it, because they didn't have assets to learn it, and nothing was "pushed up the chain." And, BTW, the sentries at the BLT gate DID have ammo in their weapons, but the order from SACEUR was no round in the chamber. One sentry did manage to get off a shot before the truck disappeared under the building. I was there, not sitting back home making up hindsighted bullshit. -Gunny Opie 24th MAU 1983

We're you there when the USS New Jersey put 102 rounds into the Baca Valley? I spoke with one of the guys that worked on the damage assessments afterwards. He told me they expected it would take those @#$%$@ 2-3 years to replace the personell and equipment that we destroyed in less than 12 hours. That coupled with the full day alpha strike bombing from our aircraft carrier. I got to watch that from the flight deck of my LPH (either the Guam or Iwo Jima) from 5 miles off shore. Front row seating. I did 2 tours. It's been so long I don't remember if that carrier was the USS Enterprise or the USS Independence on that tour. At least we got so good licks in before we left. Even if it wasn't done by us Marines.

If my memory is correct we deployed all of are embarked Marines to the Airport and they experienced fires almost on a daily basis. My division spent time on the ground providing the Lebanese civilian population with medical care and working to fix schools that had been damaged by the civil war and the Israeli shelling under almost the same conditions. Unbeknownst to us when we turned over to the next amphib group that they would be involved in the bombing on 23 Oct 1983. BTW I ended up staying in the Navy for a total of 33 years and did tours with the Marines in Desert Shield/Storm, Okinawa, MCCDC Quantico and HQMC in the Pentagon.

I was on the reactionary force at Camp Lejeune North Carolina that replaced those that were killed.. fortunately or unfortunately I was in 81 mm mortars and those marines were not replaced by our battalion.. It was a very surreal moment and I'll never forget it.. God bless, the United States Marine corps. And the men who served.. Semper fidelis

I would really like to know whatever became of LCPL Nashton (2nd Tank Battalion, TOW Company). When the Commandant was visiting the wounded from the collasped building in the hosptal LCPL Nashton motioned for a pen and paper because he was hooked up to medical equipment and unable to talk. He wrote "Semper Fi" on that paper. From what I heard the Commandant got really choked up by this. Thank you for posting this and God Bless...

Everyone seems to think that the bombing is all there was to Beirut. Wrong. We received potshots and strays from day one and in August things got more serious. We took regular harassing fire and sniping. At the end of August all hell broke loose and we took our first killed and wounded. As August became September, the Israelis pulled back from Beirut and the city erupted. From that point on, it was a very rare day that we weren't under fire from small arms, mortars, rockets, and even 23mm anti-aircraft guns shooting down at us from the hills. This cease fire and that cease fire were broken as soon as they were negotiated. We continued to take casualties on a regular basis. Then came October 23rd. What haunts me the most is that we weren't allowed to hit back... we had to sit in that perimeter and take it. It wasn't our war but we were smack dab right in the middle of it and we paid the toll in blood. A toll exacted as much by the politicians in Washington DC as by the militias and terrorists we faced. I can forgive the forces arrayed against us, it was a war they were fighting and they acted accordingly. I can never forgive the politicians who rendered us helpless in the midst of battle.

@@CplSkiUSMC I agree with you 100% on it being the politician's fault and not letting the Marines defend themselves and take action. @@dannystranahan1004 I think President Reagan would have done more but the house democrats were fighting him tooth and nail and trying to tell him he didn't have the authority to put us in there. We were also in the shadow of Vietnam and all of the politicians were all weak kneed because of it. It was a humanitarian intent, but you can't keep the peace when there's no peace to keep. If you're gonna create peace then you have to kick the asses of the aggressors and we weren't allowed to do that.

Can I have an honest information of why 299 Marines located in foreign country? What was their purpose? Were they invited or not legally to be there or not? And an attack like this has a major reason behind it, so why they've been attacked if they were on peaceful mission? I'm just looking for real information out political or propaganda. Thanks. Which has NOTHING whatsoever to do with the tragedy incurred by the these youngsters and their families, shipmates, friends and neighbors. I spent twenty years in uniform, including many years during the Vietnam War. I can assure you that policies of these sorts are made by our most senior elected and appointed officials, NEVER by teenagers and those in their twenties, thirties and forties who wear our nation’s uniforms. I have no issue with criticisms of those the decision-makers, BUT today - and this KZread video - isn’t about geo-politics, national security strategies, and other “stratospheric level” matters. RATHER it is to honor, respect and remember the 241 Americans servicemen who gave their lives in Lebanon on 23 October 1983, serving and sacrificing the United Sates of America.

The Beirut "peacekeeping force" was an impossible mission. We should have let Israel finish off the PLO and Yassar Arafat once and for all. Instead, we were a huge target, the long Marines stayed in Beirut, the more they wanted us out of their home lands. I did two deployments to Beirut and it was nothing but a political stunt by Reagan to flex his willingness to use force.
