I wish our leaders would acknowledge a few more details about the events instead of these empty platitudes. Dear Commandant, who attacked? Why? What were their ideological reasons? Who were the "peaceful protesters" attacking and harassing the patrols? How do we honor our fallen by sanitizing history?

I remember that day like it was yesterday. On October 7, 1983, I saw the Marine recruiter with the intent of enlisting. I was told I had to lose 30 pounds. Two weeks later the barracks bombing happened. That terrible day made me more determined to enlist in the Marine Corps. Those Marines in Beirut were a big inspiration to the point of losing 48 pounds and enlisting on March 30, 1984. I would like to pay tribute to Lcpl Luis Nava who was KIA that day. May you Marines NEVER be forgotten. 🇺🇸🦅

Thirty seven hours, thirty seven months, thirty seven years. I wonder today (and everyday since losing you) what our families lives would have been like, if you were still here. I still remember the very last time I saw you in winter alphas, surprising everyone at memaws, during Thanksgiving dinner and the way memaw cried, because she didn't expect you to be home. I still have the last photo of you, that you sent to memaw, from Beirut. I never dreamed, it would be the last pic, I ever saw of you. For years, I'd wander around the front hallway in your spare pair of jungle boots and your cover on my head. Your loss, never quite understood for a nine year old little sister, but, news photos, that haunted me for years to understand why. Why would someone do this to my big brother and his fellow Marines? They were only there, to try to help. My fate decided by the act of terrorism, from that day. As I stand down from my career, after thirty years and four tours of combat served in both Iraq and Afghanistan, I pray that I've made you proud of the service I gave to my country in your memory and the memory of all of our brothers that fell with you on that day. I love you Denny. I miss you and will continue to miss you, for the remainder of my life. RIP

As I sat in my living room and watched the reports coming in from Beirut, I ws pissed off. As the hours went by, and the news ran the roster of names of Marines who lost their lives, I wept. No one there in that room that day felt the pain that ran thru me, and many others, nor do I ever expect them to. So, as I watched this years after it was posted and read your memorial to your bother, again, I find myself weeping, not only for the loss of your brother and our fellow Marines, but for some reason this shows up on the same day as I lost my son, 04/28/09. As long as there is someone alive that remembers them, then they are still here with us. Take care and Semper Fidelis, little sister.

What were you, an American, doing in Japan? Sounds like an invader to me, they got what they deserved.

A sad day in Marine Corps & US history. I was serving at the MCCES in 29 Palms when this happened. Thanks for remembering our brothers that paid the ultimate sacrifice that day. I hope we still remember the hard lessons learned by not allowing our Marines to stand their guard post without ammunition for their firearms. Had they been allowed to have a loaded firearm, the events of that day would have been very different. Our brothers & their families paid a steep price for poor policies & decisions.

I had two buddies there just after the bombing they were in Grenada before going to beiruit. They both said that they had guard duty without ammo then as well. I was a L/Cpl training at cax in 29 palms on 10/23/83 after that we went back to Camp LeJeune and we left for Beiruit on 2/14/84. I was on the Uss Nassau LHA-4 we only sat off the coast of Lebanon but went to Haifa several times along with a stop in Norway and Rota Spain. I was in 3/10 Golf Battery Motor Transport. Semper Fi.

I was a 9th grade NJROTC cadet at the time. One of the Marines killed L/Cpl. Rickey Stevens graduated from my high school. There was a moving memorial service for him. That day is when I decided to join the Marine Corps. I’m retired now. Here’s to The FALLEN. SEMPER FI‼️🍻

I went to boot camp Oct. 18 1983 and they let us watch this on the news. I just remember the incredible sadness. The Marines that were digging with their bare hands trying to rescue the people in the building. Also, the sadness knowing when I was going home for Christmas in December (WM bootcamp was only 9 weeks long in those days) that these Marines would not be home for Christmas again. Semper Fi. You will never be forgotton.

Yes, same here I went to boot camp at MCRD in San Diego California and arrived just a couple of weeks after you on November 7, 1983. After graduation I got assigned to go to Sea School and got orders to be on the USS Dwight D Eisenhower Nuclear aircraft carrier guarding the ships nuclear weapons. While we were crushing the Mediterranean sea around, April 1984, Marines on the ship were told to suit up with full combat gear to be deployed to Beriut Lebanon due to some unexplained hostile situation but as we were standing by, the orders were cancelled for unknown reason. I believe President Regan declared the start of War Against Terrorism immediately after the Marine Corps Barracks booming and it became a "Campaign" event declaration. There is never any such thing as "Peace Time". The dam VA is saying that I served in the military from 1983 till 1987 during Peace Time? Bologna! The VA has the nerve to insult Marines who were on active duty on and after the bombing of the Marine Corps Barracks in Beriut Lebanon to label us as serving during Peace Time. Bullshit, there is never Peace!

I hope to become a Marine as soon as I finish high school, Semper Fi guys.

CMC and SGTMAJ MC, a heart felt and genuine thank you for this remembrance. HMM-165 "White Knights" aboard USS Tarawa "Eagle of the Sea", was through the Suez, steaming through the IO on the way back from supporting ops a month earlier Sept 83. This CPL will always remember the exact spot on the flight deck and where I was on this day.

I had a buddy that was there. If not for a commo check, on the other side of Beruit, he’d likely have been killed. He gave me a briefcase that was taken from the rubble. He planted oak trees at Camp Lejeune to commemorate the fallen. Every October, I’ll think of these Marines and SSGT. WILLIAM ROBERT “Bobby” HILL, USMC.

I’m at itb right now, just got word today that I’m splitting and going to learn the 0331 mos. graduated on 9/11 from PI. I keep getting reminded why I joined, these men are true heroes. Simper Fi devil

I was there and always think about it. Probably one of the things that stuck out to me during the rescue and recovery was all the pictures laying in the orange mud, and seeing all those photos of family and friends all scattered around. My heart broke for those people and still does. When I got out of the service and returned home to New York and try to mentally escape October 23, 1983, only to be working in NYC on September 11, 2001, and once again seeing pictures on the fences looking for missing loved ones. It brought me back to Beirut mentally, and it hasn't left me. For those of you, I don't know, and lost a loved one 39 years ago my heart goes out to you and I think of my fallen brethren every day. Semper Fi.

Rest in peace. Those brave Marines should always be remembered for the sacrifice they made. My deepest condolences to their loved ones and friends. As a Canadian, I appreciate and respect all that the American military does to maintain the west's security and liberty.

I deployed with the HS-7 Dusty Dogs as a rescue swimmer on board the USS John F Kennedy. We were supposed to do a West-Pac cruise that year but they blew up the USMC barracks in Beirut Lebanon on 10/23/1983 killing almost 300 of Americas finest Devil Dogs. We steamed full speed from Rio to Beirut in less than a week and stayed on Bagel Station for nine months as part of the Multi National Peacekeeping Force flying around the clock almost the entire time. I logged over 1000 hrs flight time as a Helo crew chief during that cruise. We lost four aircraft from the Air-wing one to Syrian rocket fire and the Indy lost one as well. To all who served and the Devil Dogs on the Beach "Fair wind and following seas" brother's, it was an honor to serve with you all! 10/23/83, never forget.

STA 3/2 we were the Air Alrt Battalion at Lejeune that night. We were waiting for trucks to take us to air port. Midnight hit we were relieved by 6th Marines.

I’m from Connecticut and met Private Esposito at Recruiting Center in Middletown and was a Series behind him as he just Graduated and me starting. I got wind of his passing and will always Remember. Condolences to his Family. Semper Fi

I distinctly remember that. And the families that I knew personally that were left missing but not forgotten.

I will NEVER forget....I will continue to HONOR all those lost that day, my personal connection is to the "Kirk's Knights", and HONOR all those who survived that horrible day. I pray for continued healing, kindness and support to those who are forever impacted by that day. Let it teach us how to come together under dire circumstances to help and support one another and show what empathy looks and feels like. I remember like it was "yesterday" and will continue to hold their light forward if at least in my soul!!!

I remember that day very well, it was my best friend's birthday and we had been hunting in the mountains. When we got back the next day we heard of fellow Marines had died.🇺🇸🙏

I was a disbursing clerk in the Navy, who happened to be married to a Marine. Our last duty station was Camp LeJeune. My husband just came back from Okinawa when that travesty happened. Some of our friends were in Beirut. Semper Fi.

Thanks. I remember waking up that morning as a young teenager and seeing what happened. I later served with many Marines who had been there, most of my Drill Instructors had been in Beruit.

0341. '72-'76. Served as a forward observer with 81mm mortars, got out in field mostly with Alpha 1/8. I was on the previous float 1/8 made in 1974. We retrieved a bunch of civilians from Cyprus when Turkey invaded the island. We were in Naples, Italy just getting ready for some R&R when word came down that we had to get back to the ship (USS Coronado) and get back to sea. At sea we learned that President Nixon was resigning and no one knew what might happen next. All in all, we were busy. But it was nothing compared to the shit assignment 1/8 was given in '83. Most of you here weren't born yet so this is just a little history story. Remember it. Those boys deserve it.

Thank you for doing this. Nothing in the news, the country has forgotten. Those of us that served there live it every day. Semper Fidelis

I got to meet the captain that was there and was photographed carryi g a brother. That photo would later be on the cover of TIME. It was a huge honor to meet him. I bought him a beer, and one for his men that were lost

Semper Fi, My Brothers! Thanks for reminding me, all that's been going on for so many years I forgot. I just got out of the Marines the end of April and sure felt for my brothers, Lebanon had been a problem for awhile.

I Was There ! I served There ! I have Photograph of me and my Brothers there !. Time Magazine has pics of my team . We escorted Time Magazine through "Hooterville" on a Patrol. I served as Primary Radio Man on that Patrol. Hooterville was Southwest Beirut. Between the International Airport and the Baikal Valley.

Now more than ever a clear memory is needed, thank you for your sacrifice, it has not been in vain.

Rest in peace Marines, remember who caused this mess. And who made it happen while being warned of the possible threats.

Of all days that affect me the hardest. October 23rd is the day that hits the hardest and it still hurts me to this day. I was stationed at NAS Memphis going thru the 6343/AE pipeline at that time. I was crushed and I have never seen my senior Marines affected in such a way that it still stays with me to this day. The only time where the pain was greater was when I lost my father... Semper Fidelis.

Proud Dad of an active duty Marine overseas, God bless all Marines, past and present.

I was with Alpha 1/8 in 86 and Kilo 3/8 from late 86 to 89. We want to okinawa and the Philippines in 1987 with kilo 3/8. And then a 1989 kilo 3/8 did a Med Float. 0311 and 0331.

These Marines were brought home via the mortuary at Dover AFB, Delaware. I was a 24-year-old Airman First Class working in the Public Affairs Office at Dover. Since I was a 79131 broadcasting specialist it fell to me to be one of the media escorts for the networks that came to the base for the memorial service in a hangar built to house a C5 Galaxy. That hangar was huge, and it was filled with flag-draped caskets and TV and print cameras on flatbed semi trailers so the media could get good pictures over the heads of the crowds of people there for the memorial. The memory of seeing so many caskets like that will always haunt me. Even though I was half a world away from the bombing the events nevertheless came to impact me very personally.

After high school I'm going straight to the marines right now I have been preparing myself to be the best in shape. God bless you all and remember who you are semper fi

@@mattk6719 Hezbollah was behind the bombings. The French contingent also lost 58 paratroopers on that day at their compound. You're right, the attackers should have been named and the dead terrorists that are still being hunted and killed 37 years later.

forgive Im sorry I think I missed something? did someone come to America with guns and arms and build a base and try to invade and destroy in the name of freeing you and giving you peace? did another country just pull up your shores and forced their way in and killed you? what is not to forget and forgive. your living in a bubble? stay the heck away from foreign land and your army and marines will still be alive and safe and sound. your army has massacred millions of the years theough your dirty invasions and you have the audacity to act like victims when you took yourself and placed it on someones land

My father was in the French Army and in Lebanon at the time of this bombing. Luckily he was not one of the 58 killed. Love to USA and the Marines 🇺🇸

This tragedy occurred a few years before I came into this world but I know full well of the cowardly actions of the perpetrator, I know of the lives lost, I know of the heroes who came to their aid, but how do I know this you ask, I had an Uncle who was there, who to this day refuses to discuss it, who is so stubborn he'll not admit he has PTSD!
