Edited with an update: In comparison to the Daniel Smith Essential watercolour set, Rembrandt Watercolours are more transparent and have a beautiful feel. I really think that Daniel Smith Watercolour paints are over marketed as they are more popular in the US. I really did not like the Daniel Smith and I spent the past 4 days comparing them. I want to say that if you can find Rembrandt paints try a few specially if you are based in Europe. Be aware that the paint shift a bit even after drying. I regret purchasing the Daniel Smith set which I found to be rather opaque and muddy (yes, I tried different concentrations).

These watercolours (except for the black) are vegan-friendly. I see that a lot of reviewers tend to prefer more dry brush or more controlled brush work, but I really love wet in wet techniques on cold press. I n my opinion these paints are amazing on Fabriano Artistico cold press 300 gsm paper and they are even more stunning on a rather unknown brand of vegan 100% cotton watercolour paper called DMD watercolour paper available in Europe. As a learner I purchased these watercolour paints (a set of 12) as unfortunately my Van Gogh paints were shifting and fading upon drying in a rather unpredictable manner. I compared the Rembrandt watercolours with the set of Van Goghs and found them to be a lot better rather than a bit better. Unfortunately many people look down on Artistico paper but I really love it, i bought a 10m x 1.4m roll which equates to 56 cents (EU) per A4 sheet and pricewise its on par with many budget watercolour papers (no cotton or 25% cotton). The performance and behaviour of these paints is very much dependent on the watercolour paper brand (%cotton, milling method, texture) and on the style of painting (personal preferences). I didnt find these opaque, in fact I found that the opacity decreased on my DMD watercolour paper. So for anyone out there looking for vegan-friendly watercolour paints this is a really good option and I would buy this instead of Van Gogh even as a student. Perhaps I had a dodgy Van Gogh watercolour paint set, but Rembrandt watercolours very beautiful colours and worth every penny. I will be trying them on my Hahnemühle Bamboo paper too.

I bought just one tube of Rembrandt and it was Sepia, as I thought It could be a good mixing paint with my student's grade Pentel ones (they are not that good, but they get the job done), and I really loved the colour! The quality is way superior than the other ones I have and it has even a beautiful subtle granulation when it dries. If I had the money, I would totally invest in a set, but here in Brazil, good artist's grade paints a very hard to come across and when you find them, they are so expensive. Thank you for this video, Denise, really loved it!!!

I just got some Rembrandt Pastels and I hope to get them sorted and ready for use! It has been over 30 years since I have used Pastels and I am a little anxious about it! I know you are a perfectionist, but I would bet the footage you are un-happy with would be good enough for many others here on KZread! Thanks for you being YOU! Cute swatch pages too!

Thank you Kelly! I will sheepishly admit that I didn't know until very recently that I would upload an automatic description for my videos *facepalm* I will still try to make sure the specific video materials are also added but this will save me a lot of time in the long run so that I don't have to keep going back and forth looking up the same Amazon links over and over! Such a relief and I'm so glad it's appreciated!

Next time I buy sweets I will evaluate the package for reuse in my art supply. Luckily not only gums come in these packages. I prefer cough drops, cookies or pralinées to gums. And thanks to the object swatch idea I will no longer drag my feet when it comes to swatch out the colors. 💙 💚💛 Thank you so much.

Have been using Rembrandts for over a year, now, I think, and they have become my favorite non-honey paints, edging Da Vinci by a whisker (although I've subbed a couple of DV's in my Rembrandt set). They may seem a tad less transparent in application, compared to, say, Sennelier, but the effects are fine when dried, at least for me. Maybe the thing I love most is how easily they pour out of the tube. Most of the colors pour in a very liquid fashion, which helps me not make a mess when pouring into pans. I waste less than with the paints that tend to come out in turd-blobs that you then have to stir and try not to make a mess with. I was impressed enough with Royal Talens to order the Van Gogh 24-Set, which I've already had scads of fun with. BTW, I've been using W & N Professional paper (cotton) which seems to have more tooth than CP Arches but a bit less than Arches Rough. It's very easy to guide the paint on this paper.

Lovely video yet again. I've been wondering about these paints for a while because I can get them in half pans where I live for quite a good price. I really do trust your opinion the most! Well I just finished starting an acrylic piece but really want to paint with my watercolors too! Thanks for the video!

Your paints look rather opaque. I was wondering if it's the paper. I use Fabriano Artistico Fine (cold press 300 gsm) and they are really transparent. Surprisingly, I found the Daniel Smiths to be rather opaque in comparison. So maybe its the sizing on the paper or the texture. ...
