ABOUT MICHAEL NUGENT:
Michael Nugent is an Irish writer and activist. He has written three books, co-written two and was one of the three writers of comedy musical play I, Keano. He has campaigned on many political issues, often with his late wife Anne Holliday, and he is chairperson of the advocacy group Atheist Ireland. He argues that atheism provides a better model of reality, and a better basis for morality, than believing in gods; that atheists can enjoy the benefits that many people get from religion, without the harmful effects; and that the state should be secular, promoting neither religion nor atheism. He writes a blog about happiness and atheism, and he supports Bohemians and Leeds United football clubs.
ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY:
The Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. It has been established for 190 years, aiming to promote debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.

Here is a quote that would never pass the lips of a senior leader of any Abrahamaic religion, "Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it.” The Buddha

#OrganizedReligion has always been a challenge, but I believe it may not be so much a problem with the concepts, as the humans running those organizations and the humans following them - which is the same problem with every organization, business, government agency, academic institution, NGO, army or anything else. Perhaps religion just gives justification too easily. But authority usually does, regardless of the organization in my observation. Richard Blackmore I think he might be saying that it's a change of subject to say that other things cause harm. We are discussing religious harm or help in a debate format. If the argument is 'Spanish bullfighting is barbaric" it is a change of subject and thus a fallacy to say "Well, so is Irish hare-coursing!". It may well be true but that sheds no light on the subject at hand.

So, the problem might be not religion, but the human nature.

There is only Catholic Church, Orthodox Churches, countless protestant and other pseudo-Christian denominations, Islam, Judaism, etc. The idea of religion in modern Religious studies is even more vague and general than that of for example "a vehicle". Shooting arguments on every side and putting it up together as an argument does not work. It has no intellectual weight whatsoever.

AMEN to everything that man just said. Also as he said, do not lose your focus or be distracted by claims that "religion also does good". What was being asked was "does religion harm society". Not whether religion also does good, and not whether other things also do bad. His main point here was simple, DO NOT CHANGE THE SUBJECT! Stay on subject and ANSWER THE QUESTION. Something religious people don't like to do. “Morality is doing what is right, no matter what you are told. Religion is doing what you are told, no matter what is right.” - H.L.Mencken “The further a society drifts from truth, the more it will hate those who speak it.” - George Orwell "Religion is a phase a species goes through when it evolves enough intelligence to ask profound questions but not enough to answer them." - Bill Flavell

He makes sense, but he's on his own crusade. He's absolutely obsessed with religion. He once suggested an Atheist mass on a Sunday in Dublin where all the Atheists get together and follow his version of a moral compass. He means well,but....

You could put forward the motion "food harms society" and get the motion past. It's a poor question. It was obviously written by someone who is biased and anti religious. I can't think of anything that doesn't harm society when taken to extremes. The motion should have been: religion does more harm than good. I guess it wasn't that because the motion wouldn't have past.

Something that does more harm than good: harms society. Something that does more good than harm: helps society. It's the same motion..

The motion had two sides, harm and help; they posted all the arguments under the side they argued. It's a bit messy on YT but the motion was balanced.

If this were true then we should be able to look at societies founded by atheists for such an example. They were actually worst! Peace to all!

You've got a lot of work to do yet, with 2 billion christians around the world with an opposing worldview, this little talk won't make a scrap of difference. Prove God doesn't exist , then your talk won't be so futile. The argument of " I'm smart and your not " on the belief in God, just doesn't cut it.

What a weak argument. Saying religion harms society is like saying eating harms the body. Yes, the body can be harmed from eating and yes society can be harmed by religion. It is misguided people of various religions that are causing harm to society. Religion promotes tolerance, justice, mercy and is a blueprint for living a well balanced and meaningful life.

Yes. I did. I just can't believe how ridiculous the motion is. When you say religion harms society, than the opposite can be true as well. Atheism harms society. A subset of the non-religious group also can harm society. Is this even a serious debate put forth by Oxford Union, supposedly the leading world's institution.

Your point is utterly wrong. Eating is necessary for the well being for the body and for it to survive. Without food we would die. Religion, on the other hand, is not mandatory, as plenty of atheists, who haven't dropped dead for non believing, prove.

The topic is whether religion harms society, not whether religion is necessary. That is why I'm alluding to the point that food can also harm the body. So to say religions harm society is like raising an argument that food harms the body. It is a silly blanket statement. Just like bad choices of food harm the body, wrong interpretation of the teachings of all religions contribute to disasters around the world. Atheists too are harming and causing chaos in the world. True religions promote peace, love, mercy, justice for the benefit of society.

brotherinbooks Wake me up when you get an atheist killing in the name of "atheism" with that being the real reason. I warn you not to bring Hitler to the discussion if you want to avoid being embarassed. Except religion is never helpful, unlike food. Religious people can be helpful, but it is not the religion which is making them be so.
