I absolutely love the honesty. My hair was first relaxed when I was 9 and was tailbone length. By the time I was a teenager it was mid back length, even with the best of care at the salons. Even after I started taking care of it myself as an adult. I only used indirect heat, only did low manipulation, kept up with moisture-protein treatment, always tied it up at night-my relaxed hair never grew past mid back length without breaking off as fast as it would grow in. The wasted effort was frustrating, the two textures was frustrating-that alone makes me never want to relax again. The textures were so drastically different. I would spend 6 hours maintaining my hair every week. Never able to have a life. I thought for all of this I might as well be natural. That transition was the best thing I did for myself and my hair. It’s back at tailbone length and only takes me 1.5 hours to wash and set. I love my shrinkage, my tight coils and my frizz, I don’t fight my hair. I live life and it lives with me. It’s a peaceful life. Best of luck to your journey, your hair is beautiful.

I use protective styles such as braids so that I don't fight with the two textures. In the case of thinning ends, I trim every four months. Maintenance is key!!!

@@harajuka1barbz I never skipped trims and my hair was always as well maintained as relaxed hair could be it was a 6-hour process every weekend. Broken disulfide bonds are broken disulfide bonds-that’s why the hair the eventually wears away despite optimal care. I (still) don’t protective style for number of reasons. 1. I’ve never added hair and never will, I’ll walk out with a bald head first. 2. My scalp is naturally oily and can only go so long without washing. As a natural I wash anywhere from daily to once a week, I’m very active. 3. My hair is prone to locking, especially with braids and twists, so I would never wear a style longer than a week and a half. Having one root-to-tip texture is just simpler for me.

You're not seeing the length because your ends are splitting. You need to trim your ends to retain length. Otherwise your hair will break faster than it grows

I have a totally different hair texture; I cut four inches off the ends yesterday morning because it was dry and splitting and breaking and tangled constantly, and no amount of oil or conditioning would help. Now it is about bra strap length but much healthier, and no tangles and breaks. Sometimes even straight hair needs inches off the bottom to make it pop ❤

As others have suggested, I think you should see a professional. Tangles and breakage, whether natural or relaxed, are signs of split ends. Trimming split ends and evenly relaxing your new growth are critical for healthy relaxed hair. You invested years to achieve that length and deserve to preserve it.

Exactly what I was thinking. I saw the video was she did it herself and that's fine on virgin hair but here on out she needs to see a professional and it gets pricey but that's just what it takes to maintain that length when you have a relaxer.

That's the thing especially when you're 4C. Those with 3C/4A hair won't have too much issues with new growth as their hair is soft enough to closely match the texture of relaxed hair, thus less breakage. With 4c, the difference in the two textures is where issues may begin. I have 4C hair and have relaxed it twice and lost it all eventually so now I'm back to natural which I hate being sometimes but it's the only way for me that my hair has been healthier.

Ive had relaxed hair for most of my life. I started in the 4th grade. When I was younger I would get relaxed every 6 weeks. I never had an issue but my hair stayed the same length. I went natural in my early 20s my hair grew longer than my relaxed hair. Now I’m back relaxed and I don’t get them as often maybe like every 4 months. I guess with less processing my hair grows while relaxed. I love natural hair and as beautiful as it is it’s also time consuming. I don’t want to spend an hour plus on a wash routine. But I love and appreciate when I see women rocking their natural hair and wearing cool styles with it.

I believe do to stress and other reasons.. and i suffered from a lot of shrinkage so I got frustrated but I had someone convince me to relax my hair I loved it at first but now I regret it .. I can't wait to go back 100% but I thank God I didn't lose my curls all the way just my texture.. but now that I am in a better stabled situation and I'm learning from my past mistakes and I'm less stress free my hair has been growing like crazy 🤪

I think once you relax you’ll see the difference in length, your hair is just shrunken at the roots even if it’s stretched. I relaxed after 11 years natural and I don’t regret it. I had a ton of set backs being natural but was able to get mid back length at my Peak in 2018 Now I’m at bra strap going for hip length hair. I use a rack comb because I’ve tried that one you’re using and it doesn’t do well for my natural or relaxed hair.

First of all, your hair still looks healthy, so great job keeping it on your head, cuz mine would break when I looked at it! I think you should style your grown-out relaxed hair similar to a transitioner, styling with various low manipulation twist outs, braid outs, curl sets, that won't require combing in between washing. With 4c hair, the daily combing required for straight styles might lead to breakage, especially at the line of demarcation. Edited to co-sign what others are saying in the comments. Protein treatments are going to be essential for your relaxed hair. I survived on Aphogee 2-step when I was relaxed.

So I listened to my hair and extended it to 8 weeks which is 2 months. And now I extended it to every 3 months especially since I have braids right now anyway. But without braids I would wash my hair weekly and then go see her when it was time and my hair would thrive. I've adjusted my retouch schedule and shortened the length of time I leave the relaxer on to compensate for more frequent retouches, also, I've also stopped blow drying and hot curling. My hair is not relaxed but texturwise I guess it behaves like relaxed curly/natural hair because my hair is curly without being curly appears wavy but reacts kinky. I tried curly hair routines and like you said 4:30 my hair also doesn't detangle well when wet in fact my hair gets the most tangled and matted when wet, eventhough I have some kind of curl going on only when my hair is wet. I can comb my hair with no problems or knots the best when dry. Maybe like you described it I naturally have like two (conflicting) textures naturally ...?

My hair is a lot like yours (even down to the hair growth in layers 😂) I relax 1x a year and straighten about the same amount lol. How I deal with the in-between is to just wear my own hair in braids. No combs, just finger detangling. My hair isn't as long as yours cause I was a bit scissor happy 😂 but it's either at or almost to my arm pits. Yes I would relax again cause baby girl just so thick at the roots, and I love that for her, but my arms don't love that. Other than that, it's buns. Since it's currently getting cold I'm thinking about getting a braided wig to go on top.

And I say this because I recently got a straightening treatment (not a keratin treatment though) and I like it because it allows me to go from Kurleto Street pretty easily but when you look up real character treatments, usually a person’s hair stay straight for months and when you wash all you have to do is blow dry it. What I found with my hair is it needs to be washed frequently. It does like to be wet all the time and looks best that way. I also have absolutely no time or energy to spend hours with my hairs. As long as I do wash n gos 2 to 3 x a week and keep my hair moisturized, I get to enjoy my curls and it only takes me about 10-15 to do my hair. Luckily I'm 50, so I don't have a need for length either, I am forever cutting off my hair and watching it grow right back. I have no patience for doing anything else to my hair other than slapping a product in it, shaking it, and going about my day. And I have 5 textures in my natural hair so whatever happens, happens 🤷🏾‍♀️

Our hair needs moisture! Despite what we've been taught. It's actually really important for us that we are getting that moisture as well as nutrients found in many oils. Also heat can be your friend I regularly blow dry (once every 1-2 weeks) and it has really been such an Integarl part. It warms everything helping those oils and conditioners seep into the strands. I use ChI 4 in 1 blow out brush. I use the paddle brush attachment and blow out on low once in sections then on high all together and then cool! Definitely spend time cooling your hair and scalp at the end. This has helped me retain length, increase density, and easily switch up styles! I'll usually leave my hair braided in pig tails going back and oiling my edges and parts here and there. I realize everyone is different though. My hair immediately reverts back to its super tight coils. So as far as damage, I wouldn't be so afraid! Make sure you're starting off with healthy hair first. The only thing damaged hair should be getting is some TLC. I don't shampoo often. I rinse at least once a week. And I'll occasionally use a conditioning cleanser. And last but not least, pay special attention to your ends! When washing, conditioning, blow drying, detangling, oiling. You have the root and the shaft. Each has its own regimen. (Make your own judgments!)

I see lots of comments giving tips but I figured I’d give mine incase no one has mentioned. You will need to invest in different products now that your hair is relaxed and also a much different care routine. Get Olaplex or routine protein treatments and deep conditioning treatments. DO NOT detangle your hair wet or brush your hair while it is wet. Put a spray or light weight leave in conditioner, blow dry or air dry then detangle once it is fully dry. Regular trims. Breakage is so disheartening but let go of the crusty ends or it will only get worse. If you don’t want to let go of length, just do a dusting every other week or 3 weeks until your ends are back to health. VITAMIN D!! Girl, melanated skin was made to be in the sun so because most of us are at home and aren’t vacationing at the beach everyday, we lack vitamin D! Get you some 10,000 iu on Amazon. Professional touch ups. You don’t want to overlap the relaxer and it’s very difficult to not overlap when relaxing your own hair so you must find a professional who you can trust to do your touchups. It should be the same person so they know where they left off and how to differentiate your natural hair with your relaxed hair. Anyways I hope these tips help. Your hair is still beautiful! 🤍

From watching your video where you relaxed your hair, I think your ends are snapping because your hair was over-processed, that's also why it came out flatter/thinner than you wanted. You have so much hair, you were never going to apply the relaxer all over your head on your own in decent time without assistance. Find a good hairdresser and start getting your chemical treatments done professionally. Or do half your head at a time like I saw someone else do on youtube.

I IDK seems like you aren't happy in this video comparison to your energetic personality. Maybe you are frustrated about the relaxer or maybe you missed your natural hair and wish you haven't. My little ole opinion, that's all. I had to watch this video again to be sure I don't missed the message you are trying to convey. I was thinking about the edges when a relaxer is in the hair. The hair starts to thin.

I cringed everytime she said “perm”…, but if her hair is very very coarse at the root she might need to do her RELAXER every 4 weeks and get her ends trimmed by a professional to see why she hasn’t gotten the length results she’s expecting. I’m all for home RELAXERS, but every now and then it’s good to actually have a professional to do your hair, because they can See what’s going on, how to process it evenly, and of course trimming to keep the hair health.

You should really think about finding a professional to handle your hair and share with you what products are best for your hair. You have beautiful hair so DON'T do it at home. You will find it more manageable and healthier.

She’s right, it is better to go to a professional to relax your hair and get a proper professional trim. Your hair is growing but you are not retaining the length. It could also be something wrong you are doing on your relaxer day. Also extreme relaxer stretching is not good for 4C hair, it’s actually counterproductive.
