@ViolinClass Great video. I have a added suggestion that may also be of some help. The scapula (shoulder blade) moves in its lowest plane with the muscles attached to it in a soft state only expanding/contracting (as muscles do!). Putting a finger/pencil under the bottom edge of the scapula brings a tactile feedback to the student - just as Julia was doing touching the top of the trapezius in the video . The teacher tracks the movement of the scapula and provides the feedback as the student feels the pencil with the bottom corner of the scapula as they swing the arm. This will direct the muscles around scapula to move correctly and not inadvertently lift the scapula. It is impossible for the trapezius to lift if the scapula and its muscles are moving in their lowest arc/relaxed state. This also provides the student with the overall feeling of the entire arm from finger tip to the scapula in the action. The bow arm doesn't stop at the shoulder but extends to the scapula which adds further mass and becomes a source of more power (when all other things are working). All this should also be directly related to the left shoulder too as residual 'tensions' and habits spread across the back and body. Anyhow I hope might be of some help to somebody.

Excellent video- trying to feel that "dead" weight of the arm (without assisting it ) is a very tricky task. You either want to add more of your own weight or try to "lighten the load" by tensing your arm muscles. Same thing with the index finger on the bow. It's always helpful for the student to understand how something should feel because they can't watch their teacher and see that with their eyes. I really believe that body mapping and performing these relaxation exercises should happen in the first lessons before the violin and bow is ever taken out of the case. It will save the student so much time in the long run. Thank-you.

How far are upper and lower muscles involved in wrist vibrato. And how can tension be relieved. That would be a great video to make . But thank you so much for being elaborate

I'm really struggling with the left shoulder. That one gets really tense. I don't have a shoulder rest and nothing I do keeps the violin parallel to the ground unless I support it with my hand. I tense up while I'm practicing and I want to avoid that, and I also have to tilt my head to hold the violin with my jaw. Had a teacher for four months but, now I am on my own.

If you play without any shoulder support you do need to hold the violin more with your hand, absolutely. Here lies the difficulty of starting the violin without any shoulder support: The violin should rest between your index finger and the thumb while neither of them is pressing, and also lie on your collarbone, without excessive jaw pressure. For all (especially adult) beginners, it is recommended to start with some sort of a pad; not completely without any shoulder support.
