    Such a wonderfully clear explanation and examples for upbow staccato! I’ve never been able to do it well (haven’t really needed it as an orchestral player) but my dad has always wanted me to play Hora Staccato for him. He’s 88, so I need to start practicing *right now*! 🤭 Thanks again for a great video.

    Very good indeed! I use mostly the wrist kind and in a slightly bended shape where the hand points down: this gives me the opportunity to not only control the speed but also a better coordination with the left. But as always the end justifies the means so whatever is necessary to achieve the goal is welcome. Brava professor and bravissimi your students! Drop of the hat!

    Thank you to you and your wonderful students. It was so fun and uplifting to see them play the exercises and inspire each other, including us watching! I wonder what Mr Heifetz would say if he saw this! He was a very tough task master, I think. Given the choice I would prefer you as my teacher, because you bring out the best in everyone without the huge pressure. Bravo 👏 ❤

    Julia...very well done. You are obviously a tremendous teacher, while some of your students seem to be truly exceptional. I have played the violin forever and was thinking of that passage in Saint-Saens Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso, and then Marlon nailed it like great concert artist. Although I performed with symphonies and chamber orchestras, I did a lot with jazz and blues in Las Vegas, and have an upcoming jazz-60's-70's violin cd. However, I stepped away from classical music for years working on that cd, and developing my jazz playing, and now am trying to regain my technique. Thus I greatly appreciate your videos and your truly exceptional teaching. Thank you for sharing, and for the excellent playing and efforts of your students.

    Would you go as far as to say the controlled staccato is a prerequisite to the tight arm staccato? Is that why you set the sequence in that way?

    No, it is not a pre-requisite at all. The reason to learn the controlled staccato is that it is used in many more situations that the super-fast tight arm

    don´t talk like speaking staccato ! 😂 flying staccato is too easy. But controlled upbow staccato on the string is also easy. What is a little bit more difficult ( not really ) is the downbow. See Paganini caprice Nr. 7. The difficulty is the change from upbow to downbow. and the change of the strings ! I learned the upbow staccato more from my wrist with the wrist leading the fingers. You can use suppination. In contrary for the downbow, you have to use pronation and the wrist leading downwards. For me that was the most logical way to play. And for the fast staccato, you play a stiff wrist !

  • @ViolinClassUSA

    @ViolinClassUSA

    6 ай бұрын

    We physically cannot use supination while playing with the bow. It is anatomically impossible
