Relationship advice: How to be a good partner

Considering how many marriages end and relationships fail every day, we wanted to talk about what has made our relationship long lasting and fulfilling. Of course your mileage may wary but we do think that these basic advices should apply to many, if not most couples and help them grow closer.
In some cases however, even the best advices couldn't save a dysfunctional relationship because the partners simply are not compatible. Sometimes it may be best to realize that there are gaps which cannot be bridged and to save future pain and move on.

    Dude, I just want to say that I began watching your channel because of the swords and nerd stuff. After a while I was genuinely nourishing a great deal of respect for you and your wife as hosts and persons. You took a channel about medieval weapons and made it into a community. I can see a lot of people come here not just for the weapons and the fighting, but because you two play a major role in it. I instantly feel welcomed when coming here to watch you guys. Keep the amazing work, the beautiful relationship and God bless. Greetings from Brazil.

    I have been a fan of your channel for some time now, but I just came across this video of yours. You could not be more correct. My wife and I are coming up on 34 years of marriage. We were sweet hearts beginning when I was 13 and she was 12. We are now both in our 50's. I have always said that good communication is the key. Even if you are yelling at each other, you are still communicating. Arguments are healthy for a successful relationship. Thank you for a wonderful video, and it makes me happy to know that your relationship is so productive. Take care and, as always, Semper Fi.

    This is the smartest video I have seen in I don't know how long. I think in any case of human interaction being considerate, respectful, open minded and carefully listening before answering is unbelievably important. There is a concept of non-violent communication that suggests you should present your point of view in the way of "When we argue I feel like..." or "When I see the dirty kitchen it makes me think..." instead of blaming the other person in the sense of "You always..." or "You never clean up after yourself" It may not be for everyone and it takes quite some practice and introspective to master, but it is an approach to bear in mind.

    "Talk to each other and be honest". The fundamental principal behind any successful relationship!I do some pretty crazy shit (by 'normal' standards) and my wife used to be a very small-town girl. However because I was completely honest and open (and educated) about the shit I got up to, she accepted me for who I am. Our love is strong!

    It's great that you bring up looking outside the relationship for satisfaction of certain "fetishes" if your partner is unwilling to fulfill or simply can't. As long as communication is left open and these things aren't being done in secret I see no problem. The issue with so many is that they don't communicate and also have very unrealistic ideas of what a relationship ought to be.

    Entirely sensible advice, all of it. The whole time, it was driving me nuts how Cara (or Kara, I can't recall) had her headrest askew. I don't know why, but that just drove me nuts. If you two ever do feel like going on for an hour about the topic, I wouldn't mind watching it. Any couple who can still stand each other after over a decade have to have some good ideas, and I definitely see the sense in pretty much everything you two were saying. Also, you really are a cute couple.

    pretty good until the open relationship part. I would never be ok with opening the relationship with someone that I want for myself and myself for my partner. If they're into skatplay and other weird shit then the partner would of already know about it before hand and be ok with. If not, then someone is holding to many secrets from what they actually are and like towards their partner which wont end good

    I agree. I'm getting older & sometimes young people still ask me for relationship advice, which is nice, but I have to stress it's only based on my own experiences & I don't usually know where to start! I think planning for the breakup immediately, together, is essential, and it took me way, way too long in life to realize this! Also, some basic lessons in biology and cutting through the BS platitudes about love & all that, I could have used!

    Great advice! You two are completely right that the foundation to any successful relationship between humans beings is communication. Not just for couples but families- indeed, any group of people who live together. You can't solve any problems or even get to know your partner well if you refuse to talk. No one can read your mind if you don't open your mouth. And, yes, there is no such thing as "normal" where sex is concerned so you better learn to be open about that as well in an serious relationship. :D Thanks for the video, Skallagrim and Cara- by the way, you two are really cute together. This is true. And it's only because of our cognitive ability it becomes a decision we can make. That's probably because we can see pain and pleasure as something beyond the mere physical. We can convince ourselves of the relative pleasure death could be if certain interpretations are made. In that sense, it would be like breathing. Though it functions on an automatic, hard wired level, we can take control. But then, because it's hardwired,death and fear become a foundational aspect of existence.

    I just saw this video. It made me subscribe to your channel. This advice is really really really fucking good and some of it may seem obvious but we always miss the most obvious points and im kicking myself for not doing these simple yet effective things in a relationship. If I had done it my fiancee would still be alive (no I did not kill her, we had a fight and she was a victim of a robbery that went bad), and sometimes I feel that if I had been more mindful about these things I would be on the road to having something that you guys have right now. Thank you for doing this video. It really spoke to me. Really guys. Thanks

    I think that's a valid point. After all, you could want to avoid pain as well as want to acquire pleasure. And, yes, in a broad sense, not just physical. When you speak in terms of "disturbs" or "prevents" I still see a fear of loss. Interestingly, from the position of strength, there is anoyance or anger, but from a position of weakness, there would be fear. But at root is still the issue of the loss of a value, isn't it?

    Don't beat yourself up about it. It's not an easy thing to do, especially if you've built so much around an idea. It means there's a great deal of digging and rethinking, and frustration at the mistakes that have gone before because of the mistake. Then again, sometimes it still works for one and we cling to it till we can find that it causes problems in our behaviour. I tend to think of myself as more behaviour oriented. Some are goal oriented. May be a failing on my part, but useful in ways...

  • @RichardRoy2
    @RichardRoy211 жыл бұрын

    And I do have a tendency to do that, because I think it a good exercise to relate to things on different levels and in different ways. I expressed thing in terms of value and want, but I knew they were simplified variants of the pleasure/pain mechanism we all have. I do try to simplify some things to binary approaches because of the life/death precipice we exist on. It just seems like too important a point not to factor it into our existence. I think every breath we take is a decision to live.

    I believe what you two are saying I wish everyone had a successful relationship and I wish everyone would not just go after someone just because you think there really attractive there's so much more there then how they look and another thing everyone is different and wired and maybe they don't look the best and maybe they think something's fun but you don't think so but you gotta look past that because that's not all the person is there's so much more than that.
