Relationship advice: How to be a good partner
Considering how many marriages end and relationships fail every day, we wanted to talk about what has made our relationship long lasting and fulfilling. Of course your mileage may wary but we do think that these basic advices should apply to many, if not most couples and help them grow closer.
In some cases however, even the best advices couldn't save a dysfunctional relationship because the partners simply are not compatible. Sometimes it may be best to realize that there are gaps which cannot be bridged and to save future pain and move on.

Dude, I just want to say that I began watching your channel because of the swords and nerd stuff. After a while I was genuinely nourishing a great deal of respect for you and your wife as hosts and persons. You took a channel about medieval weapons and made it into a community. I can see a lot of people come here not just for the weapons and the fighting, but because you two play a major role in it. I instantly feel welcomed when coming here to watch you guys. Keep the amazing work, the beautiful relationship and God bless. Greetings from Brazil.

I love to see couples that are "making it work" as people say. You two are both adorable and awesome at the same time. I've been with my girlfriend for over 4 years and I would like to think that we will be in the same kind of situation as you two are now, happily married. I like to think that we keep nothing from each other but birthday presents. :) I'd like to wish you two a continuing, happy relationship. Blessed be.
I wish we had more people like you two around. It's nice to see actual honesty between two people.
I have been a fan of your channel for some time now, but I just came across this video of yours. You could not be more correct. My wife and I are coming up on 34 years of marriage. We were sweet hearts beginning when I was 13 and she was 12. We are now both in our 50's. I have always said that good communication is the key. Even if you are yelling at each other, you are still communicating. Arguments are healthy for a successful relationship. Thank you for a wonderful video, and it makes me happy to know that your relationship is so productive. Take care and, as always, Semper Fi.

I love you guys so much. I wanted to express my thanks to both of you for this video and all your other vids. I'm a huge fan. I wish you both nothing but the best this life has to offer
This is the smartest video I have seen in I don't know how long. I think in any case of human interaction being considerate, respectful, open minded and carefully listening before answering is unbelievably important. There is a concept of non-violent communication that suggests you should present your point of view in the way of "When we argue I feel like..." or "When I see the dirty kitchen it makes me think..." instead of blaming the other person in the sense of "You always..." or "You never clean up after yourself" It may not be for everyone and it takes quite some practice and introspective to master, but it is an approach to bear in mind.
Watching this video this lately makes me sad. I broke up with my lover months ago. Now i realize the things you said about talking about problems and waiting for your partner to understand you by some way were absolutely our problems. I wish i watched this video when you published and maybe everything would be different for me now.

Some of the best life advice right here, folks! Skall, Cara...you guys rock!
"Talk to each other and be honest". The fundamental principal behind any successful relationship!I do some pretty crazy shit (by 'normal' standards) and my wife used to be a very small-town girl. However because I was completely honest and open (and educated) about the shit I got up to, she accepted me for who I am. Our love is strong!
the not talking thing and mind reader thing reminds me of a meme I saw "Men are a lot like dogs: we're really happy to see you, and have no idea why you're mad"
Loads of great advice here. Anger definitely clouds one's judgement. It's important to understand that no one can anger you unless you let them.
"There a re7 billion normals" This is one of those deep quotes! i really like how you put it
This video is so pre-adpocalypse. I completely agree though. When women won't tell you what an issue is it drives me INSANE.

Guys do that too, because they are taught to not show emotions and bottle everything up.
I know this is an older video, but these are damn fine and intelligent thoughts that deserve to be noted with respect and credit. VERY mature and well grounded logic all throughout!
I only found your channel yesterday, seeing a few videos about weaponry etc. I can safely say I cannot stop watching. I like nearly all the random topics you cover and enjoy your style. Keep up the good work and thank you for sharing! P.s. It's good to see an example of a vegetarian who can discuss the topic with intellectual honesty and openness. I'm tired of the stereotyping that goes on and it's nice to be able to point to a source that I can say pretty much sums up my views on the topic.
Best relationship on KZread...a real inspiration in mine
Thanks guys for this advice, I know I def need it... I can safely say all my relationships have been pretty disfunctional and when I saw your last video I thought it was really cool how you two were on the same page, it gives me hope that it can work out, that's why I had to make that comment that you two are the coolest couple at least in my book =)
Thank you for this video. You guys are simply beautiful!

It's great that you bring up looking outside the relationship for satisfaction of certain "fetishes" if your partner is unwilling to fulfill or simply can't. As long as communication is left open and these things aren't being done in secret I see no problem. The issue with so many is that they don't communicate and also have very unrealistic ideas of what a relationship ought to be.
I don't know why but i just like watching this channel.
Well, Allow me to Thank you. You're completely right.
thank you so much for sharing this!
You are an amazing couple. Our whole team wishes you all the best and a great new year. Much *Love* to you :)
my wife and i have been married for almost 8 years and the reason why we're still married is because of all the points in this video. The most important aspect is communication.
Awesome video with a lot of very good advice. Thank you.
This was amazing, thank you Skallagrim!
Honesty is the best policy. Sanity and normality is relative. Nothing is alien if it comes from a place of personal responsibility and empowerment(and isn't illegal for good reasons).
Damn, you guys seem to have an ideal relationship. I'm so happy that this level of intelligence is possible in our world. I hope that some day I'll be capable of making such a video. Good luck to you two.
Thank you skallagrim and cara for the advise
I agree completely with everything you said, and honestly I wish everyone could be like that. I will admit I have work to do but me and my girlfriend do most of those ( except sexual because of her past but I 110% respect her choice ) I do believe it'll help our relationship as a whole to watch the video together because she is more bad then I am sometimes when it comes to hiding away. So thank you for the video, and honestly thank you for all the amazing videos.
Entirely sensible advice, all of it. The whole time, it was driving me nuts how Cara (or Kara, I can't recall) had her headrest askew. I don't know why, but that just drove me nuts. If you two ever do feel like going on for an hour about the topic, I wouldn't mind watching it. Any couple who can still stand each other after over a decade have to have some good ideas, and I definitely see the sense in pretty much everything you two were saying. Also, you really are a cute couple.
pretty good until the open relationship part. I would never be ok with opening the relationship with someone that I want for myself and myself for my partner. If they're into skatplay and other weird shit then the partner would of already know about it before hand and be ok with. If not, then someone is holding to many secrets from what they actually are and like towards their partner which wont end good
You guys are so sweet; I hope you're this rational about life and relationships still
Hmmm, wish I could give more than one thumbs up for the video. Thanks for sharing!
New to the Channel and youtube thought I should check this out. Really good advice guys. Seems simple on the surface but you're right it takes communication patience and more communication. I'll be sharing this around I know some humans who could use this advice
I've learnt from this. Thank you.

I know that feeling, but there are women who like that. I've been with a couple of women who loved how open and forward I was, but yeah most women shut down at that. Frankly it might be best to tone that part down as much as you can so the woman has time to become comfortable
thank you this video helped me alot,
Thank you for the kind offer :) For now, I think it wouldn't make much sense for me but as Skall says, for him it would be great.
One big thing that folks seem to forget is that finding someone who shares the same, similar or whatever core values also helps cement things. Normally when two people with vastly different core values get together....things don't always turn out well.
Thank you this is a good video and true.
Absolutely great video - you could hardly speak truer words. BIG thumbs-up! And you two are really cute together! ;-)
This is some really good advise.
Wish more people thought like this. Great video!
I really wish more people were like you two :)
I agree. I'm getting older & sometimes young people still ask me for relationship advice, which is nice, but I have to stress it's only based on my own experiences & I don't usually know where to start! I think planning for the breakup immediately, together, is essential, and it took me way, way too long in life to realize this! Also, some basic lessons in biology and cutting through the BS platitudes about love & all that, I could have used!
Great advice! You two are completely right that the foundation to any successful relationship between humans beings is communication. Not just for couples but families- indeed, any group of people who live together. You can't solve any problems or even get to know your partner well if you refuse to talk. No one can read your mind if you don't open your mouth. And, yes, there is no such thing as "normal" where sex is concerned so you better learn to be open about that as well in an serious relationship. :D Thanks for the video, Skallagrim and Cara- by the way, you two are really cute together. XD
thank you for the awsome video :D you guys are awsome.
Excellent advice all around. And ya'll make a cute couple! Keep on keepin' on!

Love the two of you together. Such a great relationship from what I've seen. You are cute together.
You guys are awesome!
This is true. And it's only because of our cognitive ability it becomes a decision we can make. That's probably because we can see pain and pleasure as something beyond the mere physical. We can convince ourselves of the relative pleasure death could be if certain interpretations are made. In that sense, it would be like breathing. Though it functions on an automatic, hard wired level, we can take control. But then, because it's hardwired, death and fear become a foundational aspect of existence.
I love you guys :) love this nice relationship.
I have no girlfriend, but i have plenty of lady-friends around that keeps my company,i don't care if one is ugly-it's from the inside that counts.Plus, your wife seems like a very good person, her aura is beutiful.
Cara is SO BEAUTIFUL. I'm not even saying this because I like you two. Cara is just objectively a very beautiful woman. That's all.
I just saw this video. It made me subscribe to your channel. This advice is really really really fucking good and some of it may seem obvious but we always miss the most obvious points and im kicking myself for not doing these simple yet effective things in a relationship. If I had done it my fiancee would still be alive (no I did not kill her, we had a fight and she was a victim of a robbery that went bad), and sometimes I feel that if I had been more mindful about these things I would be on the road to having something that you guys have right now. Thank you for doing this video. It really spoke to me. Really guys. Thanks
You two are pretty cool :) and so wise in what you say on this video.
I wish I had seen this before I had to figure it out myself lol, this is great advice

JdogdoesStuff I don't care about my name on KZread yeah but you might as well learn it now so you don't learn it by trial and error and I am quite focused on school I should be graduating early in 2 years so I am doing fine thanks for your concern
I think that's a valid point. After all, you could want to avoid pain as well as want to acquire pleasure. And, yes, in a broad sense, not just physical. When you speak in terms of "disturbs" or "prevents" I still see a fear of loss. Interestingly, from the position of strength, there is anoyance or anger, but from a position of weakness, there would be fear. But at root is still the issue of the loss of a value, isn't it?
I feel like the advice in this video would be usable in other aspects of life as well. Especially if people these days would stop being so sensitive and actually communicate what they want
Sorry yes it was a typo. I love what you and you wife said. It is so true
That's so sad I didn't discover your channel that time when you made that video, it would help me a lot. I wish I had father and mother like you and Cara.

Tallon WarHawk I'm glad someone else was thinking the same thing 😂
Don't beat yourself up about it. It's not an easy thing to do, especially if you've built so much around an idea. It means there's a great deal of digging and rethinking, and frustration at the mistakes that have gone before because of the mistake. Then again, sometimes it still works for one and we cling to it till we can find that it causes problems in our behaviour. I tend to think of myself as more behaviour oriented. Some are goal oriented. May be a failing on my part, but useful in ways...
And I do have a tendency to do that, because I think it a good exercise to relate to things on different levels and in different ways. I expressed thing in terms of value and want, but I knew they were simplified variants of the pleasure/pain mechanism we all have. I do try to simplify some things to binary approaches because of the life/death precipice we exist on. It just seems like too important a point not to factor it into our existence. I think every breath we take is a decision to live.
Your amazing together I've been married twice me & my first were great together but my second were like a rollercoaster about to crash at the end
I believe what you two are saying I wish everyone had a successful relationship and I wish everyone would not just go after someone just because you think there really attractive there's so much more there then how they look and another thing everyone is different and wired and maybe they don't look the best and maybe they think something's fun but you don't think so but you gotta look past that because that's not all the person is there's so much more than that.
