What is Scale Armor? - Practical Aspects & Historical Overview

This is an introduction to a type of historical protection that seems pretty popular in fantasy settings in one form or another. Not quite as iconic and ubiquitous as a mail hauberk, but arguably cooler looking. :)

Oh i know the problem. A couple of years back i was doing swordtraining with a female friend for some time. And i can tell you, the innuendos in the German language are even worse than in English (for example, the German word for scabbard is "scheide" which coincidently is also a commonly used term for the vagina), to the point where i had trouble explaining to other people what we were doing and keeping it innuendo free (which i had to do repeatatly when i came to work with a black eye that i had received by blocking too slowly - at some point i only replied with "i got beaten up by a girl") *sigh*

Much quicker than plate though. With playe its is all much more finnicky and demanding of high quality across the entire piece, or else it could be compromised With scale, chain and lamellar, yes it takes a while to make all of them but they dont require as much care and precision as plate, and one bad unit doesnt require that you start all over. Plus repairing the armor is far more cost effective and time efficient than plate

I stumbled into this video while searching for info on D&D realism, namely whether various armors are noisy enough to impose disadvantage on stealth, and this is the only example I’ve found of anyone moving in any armor in a noise isolated environment. (Sound of movement in scale mail at 3:00) Can you do a video comparing the volume of various different armors?

I can tell you from experience that maile is very similarly loud, as it still has thousands of metal pieces moving against one another. Plate armor is also loud, as even though there are relatively fewer pieces, the pieces are larger and resonate more, and still hit one another, making clanging sounds as you move. Overall, I would leave the Disadvantage to stealth checks as they are in the PHB, and allow for fantasy materials and magical enchantments to make medium and heavy armors quiet and stealthy. Hope that helps! :D

@@nekoman8560 the exception would be brigandine as the pieces are all tightly bound and sometimes sandwiched between cloth or leather. Lamellar armor is in the middle ground where depending on the exact construction it could go either way. Happy to help, and Happy gaming! :D

From what I understand most all metal armor would more likely make noises. Though if you wore a snug tunic over scale mail, it would muffle the noise alot. I think chain mail would jingle more under a tunic than scale mail would, though it would muffle it some I'm sure. But I believe scouts that spied on the enemy went in just leather armor at most, because often the smallest noises can spook the horses or alert the dogs in the dead of night. During the day there is the issue with reflected light, which would alert the enemy way faster than noise, since the movement of people in armor in the camp would make it too noisy to notice much noise of the same kind of a armor outside of camp. So a armor worn under a tunic would likely work well in the day time only, and would be more risky at dead of night. Well that is my hypothesis anyway.

"basileus" in Greek or "basileios" ( if I can actually put 2 thoughts together these days and remember how it was spelled) meant, in a weird way, both "king" and "emperor" , but because of the continuous line of emperors from the Roman Empire to the ERE, the title remained technically the same, even if in 5th-6th century the administration started to shift towards Greek, and not Latin, so the title of "Imperator" became "Basileus" , but also being accompanied by "Autokrator", meaning an entity with absolute power, and in modern Greek, from what I remember, being the word for "Emperor" as for the Holy Roman Emperors, they only had real power until 13th century when the war between the ghibellines and guelphi started, the supporters of either the emperor or the pope, and that conflict restrained the emperor power until it was more a diplomatic figure than an administrative and military one the only times when the Holy Roman Emperor was powerfull was when the emperor was the ruler of wither Austria of Bohemia, and that was because of their inherited land combined with the privileges that their title of emperor gave them, otherwise the title was just sustained by the member states of the Empire in order to protect themselves and make the most use of it

Scale armor really looks more like just an archaic version of mail that requires less labour, so it was likely popular until mail was properly industrialized. A retake of the concept then brought lamellar armour and brigantine, the latter largely being considered a more economic alternative to plate. The best interpretation of scale armour that's around is essentially mail with added scales, which is obviously more decorative intent than purely practical (though that added layer might help against structural damage of the armour).

Cool video, you're definitely correct about the scale mail Distributing more of the recursive force of impact than chainmail. The larger pieces being able to move slightly absorbs some of the impact. Lamellar being interchangeable is because it is just scalemail for a Horseman or Cavalier as most of the strikes to someone on horseback would be coming from underneath or direct. That's why it wasn't too uncommon to see a suit of armor that was partially lamellar especially near the lower half and scale mail near the upper half.

I don't know if that counts, but scale armor is experiencing a comeback, overlapping discs of kevlar are used in bulletproof vests, because the overlap offers comparable protection to a thicker slab of kevlar while keeping the vest lighter and more flexible. it's just not visible on the outside of the vest.

Dragon Skin armor by Pinnacle Armor started this idea wayy back in the 2000's. It was far superior in many ways to the simple plates and fabric stacks that were in vests at the time. It also vastly spread the force of the incoming rifle round much better. All while being quite flexible for the user.

To be honest, I wonder if scale is less about protecting from sword thrusts and more about protecting from missiles. We know that the ancients used arrows extensively -- e.g. the Persians would pretty much actually darken the sky with their volleys -- and then there were the javelins, which were still used all the way through the early middle ages. I'm thinking that most of those would hit you downwards, and scale might actually be better at stopping a pilum than mail would. And then there were other missiles. E.g., the ancients used slings extensively. (E.g., lead bullets from slings defeated the Persian cataphracts.) Or lately the lead-weighted darts of the Romans. If scale actually did better at dissipating the shock from those than chain would, that might actually make it good specialized armour. I'm thinking for example the skirmishing cataphract cavalry that was extensively used in the ancient times, and in Persia they kept the scythed chariots until at least Alexander's time. Those weren't supposed to stay and get into melee. They would harrass the enemy with missiles, and save the all out shock charge for when the enemy was already wavering or showing a vulnerability, like exposed flanks. In both cases the most immediate threat to the rider would be from enemy missile troops. So I'm thinking that scale would actually make a lot of sense. What are your thoughts?

Great video! Loved the info and examples. How to deal with armored spouses killed me. I really do think I would trust scalemail to protect me in a medieval setting. Even though you can slip up through the armor like you showed. That angle of attack would only be common with a dagger or similar short sword , such as you were demonstrating with. In which case if someone comes that close - it’s grab and pull’em in as your buddies to your left and right shank them to death. Or if your facing an opponent which is on the ground. I’ve found attacking a grounded opponent to be an odd angle, and is to be approached cautiously anyways.

Doing some reasearch for our combined efforts I found an amazing referance book in my college library of mid eastern lamillar armuore that had 2 layers. The back (or rear scales) were actually t support structure for t harness. I cant recall the exact details but it was very good stuff, no doubt.

When the different types of scale armour were being discussed; it was pointed out that type 3 and 5 were better for protecting against up thrusts (as the scales are pinned to stop them lifting) yet surprisingly they were rarely used. Surely if you start to pinning the scales together (or to the substrate), you prevent them slipping over themselves and in doing so reduce the armours flexibility - one of the very reasons you may choose scale armour over other types in the first place.

In my experience working with scalemaille if you wanted to you could simply add an additional link between the scales essentially completing the European four in one pattern with them, which would mitigate the risk of upward thrusts.

I've always had the idea to start a company that would make jackets and other outerwear with hidden mail inside it, for self-defense. Like a heavy winter jacket with a layer of chainmail in it would offer a decent amount of protection, or even a scarf with mail inside could be wrapped around the forearm would be useful against someone with a knife

For armored jackets, you could do brigandine around the torso, and mail for the sleeves and below the waistline. Aside from the extra weight, people may dislike the noise of metal against metal. You might be able to work out some way of getting cloth between the rings.
