Another historical similarity is Darth Sidious taking over the plans to create the Galactic Empire after killing his master Darth Plagueis, which is similar to Joseph Stalin taking over the Soviet Union after Vladimir Lenin's death. Even Lenin's rise to power is similar to that of Darth Sidious since Lenin took advantage of Russia's defeat to Germany in WWI.

This is my second comment since I didn't feel like this point would fit in with my first comment.
Although Darth Sidious caused the Clone Wars and Hitler didn't cause Germany's loss in WWI and the Great Depression, their rises to power are similar. One created the crises and took advantage of it to seize power, while the other just took advantage of already existing crises to seize power.
