Regular Car Reviews: 2014 Ford Fiesta ST

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Tiny car. Tiny turbo. Loads of fun. One way ticket. Solid alibi. Reciprocating saw. Multiple states. Cash only. Ek praat Afrikaans vandag. Ek kan wegsteek op die Kaap. Verenigde State van Amerika geld koop baie Volkswagens. Kom ons kuier. Waar is die biblioteek? Die pen is in my hand. Die boek. Die boek! Die boek. Hoeveel rand sal dit neem vir gereelde motor resensies aan ZA kom?

    So I just bought a Fiesta ST, and it's because of this review. That bit right at the end, specifically. Mr. Regular's got something that Clarkson, Baruth, Harris, and all the rest don't, and it just sold a real car!

    Well i owned an Audi before, so I miss a lot of the luxuries, but ultimately the interior is livable. I just wish there were auxiliary controls for the touchscreen. But it was so cheap and is such a laugh on twisty roads. It's NOT a car that you can have fun with under the speed limit like a BRZ or whatever. But it is a car that you can take to 9/10 on public roads without getting into felony territory. And while FWD will always have its low-speed foibles, the combination of suspension tuning and the brake-vectoring "diff" feel likes like absolute magic.

    Sorry, one more thing. About the cornering. If you've got way too much speed going into a corner, and you do absolutely nothing but turn the wheel, no brakes, throttle, anything, the front wheels will understeer to scrub speed to precisely the correct speed for the corner, at which point (again, no inputs but steering angle), weight will shift back, the front tires will grab, and the back end will whip around with a faint whiff of oversteer. Instead of punishing you for being an idiot, it politely corrects you and say, "no, *this* is how it's done." It's unbelievable, like no other car I've driven.

    When I drive my parents 2014 Ford Escape I can't see anything. So I leave extra room, but I never feel quite safe. Sure, there's the extra airbags, and big beams. But I can't see. When I drive my '91 Civic, I feel safer. Not because the car is safer, but because I can see. I'm in control of the car. I know exactly what's upfront of me and what's behind me. The solution in my opinion is to promote locking seat-belts (and if we really want to go there, 5-point harness, or even just a four-point) with a small roll-cage built underneath the siding instead of airbags. I drive a Dodge Stratus. Wait, let me start that over. I drive a small 4-cyl. race car at a circle track. I've been t-boned at 100km/h, I've been rammed into from the back and front. Not once have even received a minor injury. Why? Not airbags, not giant beams and poor visibility, not traction control, not automatic transmissions, because of roll cages, 5-point harnesses, helmets and neck-braces. Obviously, it would be unrealistic to expect the world to start wearing these and retro-fitting cars, but just think about it. We can still have good visibility and have safety.

  • @bcsizemo

    Hell the way Ford is going the side window is going to be a quarter the height of the door. They might as well go ahead and start making rear cameras standard, that way they can just eliminate the rear window. Actually the one thing that pisses me off the most about the super tall door, isn't just the visibility, it's the fact it sucks for hanging your arm out of while cruising along. I mean who wants their elbow at the side of their head?

  • @negil

    @negil

    9 жыл бұрын

    bcsizemo Yeah, rear windows. I always want to adjust the rearview mirror in the Escape so I can see more, but then I remember that it wouldn't make a difference since the rear window is tiny.

    I agree with this, my weekend car is caged with buckets and harnesses. But there is one problem. With a cage they would have to be hidden under the trim because hit your head on a steel pipe when you are not wearing a helmet and it is game over. Meaning the pillars would be bulky to cover the cage. Now maybe your saying the 911 RS's (GT2, GT3 etc) have cages and you don't need a helmet but look closely, they are half cages only behind the seats. Safely away from your cranium in a crash. Which in my opinion every two seat sports car should have.

  • @negil

    @negil

    9 жыл бұрын

    Charles Darwin What I was thinking of was a half cage, since it would still provide plenty of support for the driver and passenger in the case of an accident and would still allow for decent visibility and room. (although not for the passengers, but that's okay since nobody cares about them anyways)

    Aw, no Recaros? Would've liked to hear what you thought of them. FWIW these cars are faster than Ford would like you to believe. HP is around 180 at the wheels, not the crank, and torque is up in the 220s at the wheels, even though Ford rates it less than that at the crank. Also, it's got way more than 135MPH in it, I've had mine up close to 140 and it was still pulling.

    Oh yes the Recaros are actually better than the ones in the Focus ST IMHO. I've dyno'd mine, it's stock except for a BOV, and coilovers though I don't plan to keep it that way too much longer. Results are: 189hp and 222 torque @ the wheels Ford has definitely underrated this car, or the internals are just that good that they don't sponge up a lot of power, probably both.

    I hate the fact that because of safety regs. Car manufacturers can excuse poor visibility (which I would argue is very dangerous) by saying "oh but it has a back up camera and warns you if someone is next to you" All that is going to do is make newer drivers not use their own eyes and rely on these aids, and even if you want to use your own eyes you can't see anything

    RegularCars I love my Fiesta ST. Makes a great DD. I'm kind of surprised you didn't mention the trunk that can magically gain a ton of space by lowering the floor below its high setting. Also the car has 197hp not 180. People complain about the extra being temporary, but its nearly impossible to get it to the point where it lowers the boost/hp.

  • @Violetcrime

    I tried this, several times, and could never get the false floor to lay right. I saw some underrated car review lady do it and I could never replicate it. I imagine it's user error, but despite my intelligence amounting to 'having a favorite color of crayon to eat' (spoiler: it tastes like 'purple'), I really can't fault people for missing what looked like a great feature.

    ***** The only Euro spec Fiestas we got were the 100 or so Fiesta Movement cars in 2010 which were made in Germany. These cars were only loaned by Ford for promotional purposes, they could not be federalized to be made road legal. Most of them were donated to driving schools, Team O'Neil in NH got 43 and turned them into rally school cars. Every one that has been sold here since 2010 was made in Mexico. The changes made were more to meet US safety regulations than to "favor the market".

    Maybe because the interior is not what we buy the car for with or without the recaros the fun of the car is stays no matter what it's an experience to say the least one that is so fun it surprises everyone

    @@tacklefatkids the recaros make the driving experience more fun by holding you in place. The base seats might as well be from a 1998 corolla

    I think I'm going to join the cult tomorrow. Oxford white. Orange Recaro. Grey wheels. Negative equity is going to suck coming out of my relatively new depreciated car. But... I need something to remember why I like driving. Not something soft. Something attentive and requiring of attention.

    we got the gen 1 fiesta in 1978. It lived on these shores for three model years and was a great car. I had two of them and they were really good--fast and handled really well. They have all but disappeared in murca. I would love to find one.

    I love the Chinese Buffet House jab that you took. I live very close to that area which left me wondering how many people even understood that joke! Love your content, keep up the awesome work. Sincerely, Your Average Local PA Teen

    Before I watch this, I'm rather curious why the description is in South African? I appreciate the effort though, since I'm Dutch, I can read it pretty well and I'm laughing my ass of. Doesn't make sense what so ever, and I love it. Great job Mr. Regular.

    Jason Sipman The video description half way through it goes into another language. Ek praat Afrikaans vandag. Ek kan wegsteek op die Kaap. Verenigde State van Amerika geld koop baie Volkswagens. Kom ons kuier. Waar is die biblioteek? Die pen is in my hand. Die boek. Die boek! Die boek. Hoeveel rand sal dit neem vir gereelde motor resensies aan ZA kom?

    Has anyone just realized the dad in the video was basically talking about covering up some major crime he did?

    Yeah, sounds like the dad was behind on his mortgage. Burnt down his house. Killed someone and buried them in a trash bag. The dad has been caught, probably out on bail and planning to run/lay low for a while.
