Regular Car Reviews: 2001 Honda Odyssey

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Honda Odyssey is the pine box that houses the corpse of The Single Life. Its a Daycare-DeLorean that can't go back in time and spread Amazing Goop on that broken condom.

My parents drove an 04 odyssey for years. It lasted a full 16 years, until it eventually, finally, crapped out. My dad loved that van, he babied the thing, washing it at least twice a month. When my parents went to trade it in its dying days , the thing had a check engine light on and was struggling to make it to 40. When they got to the dealer for an evaluation, the light miraculously went off, increasing the value tenfold. My dad says it was one last act of kindness from the van. He cherished that van, dailying it when his Ford freestyle went bad. My family has had 2 more odysseys, an 07 and our current one, a 2011. But neither of them hold a candle to that ever faithful 2004.

My parents also had a 2004 for 16 years it had over 200k when they got rid of it my mom babied it the extremely reliable only had a couple things break like the starter motor mounts and an o2 sensor I remember the power sliding doors would get stuck sometimes and one of the exterior handles broke both front window regulators though it had a problem of stalling but it only happened like 3 times it never crapped out it burned a little bit of oil but all Hondas do when they get high mileage transmission was a little rough but not major never had check engine light except for o2 sensor my mom jus wanted something newer and didn’t want a minivan anymore

Lol, say what you will, but I still think Honda Odysseys are awesome. They have so many buttons! It's an adventure just finding them all and pressing them to see what they do. Plus you can fit so many people inside, and I mean actually fit too, not cram them in like you do in most crossovers. Plus they have big ass doors that open and close with the press of a button! That's some fucking Star Trek shit right there. Plus they're so uncool, they're kind of cool. Three row crossovers just scream "I'm a boring mom trying desperately to look cool". A Honda Odyssey says "Fuck it, I don't need your rules. Plus my car has a vacuum cleaner. Where's your fucking vacuum?!".

Not really, Yoshi was. Toad was slower than Yoshi probably because he was too light to put all the power of the cart to the ground. People thought him being the lightest character equaled fastest but he just wasn't. Yoshi was perfectly balanced, able to put all those 150cc to the ground, and great in corners. My 07 odyssey launches pretty nicely. I feel like I never had a lack of power. The transmission went bad and then fixed itself and then never caused me a problem. I've taken it off road and it survived that. Truly an underrated car. I like the way it's designed too. I don't think it's ugly. The only problem I have with it is that it's not a westfalia vw vanagon.

I'm interested in why there's never been a sport van. I've always though mini-vans looked fucking cool, and every once in a while you'll see one on KZread serving Camaros and Challengers at the strip. I mean if you think about it... we've had sport versions of the wagon, trucks, SUVs, sedans, and economy cars. Vans are kind of untouched, though. You'd think the companies would throw in a option as a nod to that dad who traded in his Trans Am WS6 to appease the wife.

I loved my 2001 Odyssey. When I replaced the transmission I added the oil cooler and a tow hitch, put a Yakima box on the roof, and pulled out the middle seats. With the rear row up it was a portable room. With them down it was perfect for an air mattress and I could haul 4x8 sheets of plywood or drywall. Upgraded the stereo, had a scanner and CB, and a tablet permanently attached over the old nav screen. Spent tons of time in that van. I miss it.

My family and I had an 01 Odyssey EX in that same duct tape silver (the Honda name is "Granite Green" which is HORSESHIT!) color from 2001 until 2017. Mom drove her first, then eventually it kinda became my car (technically still registered to Dad, but I was the primary driver). Drove her to high school (had my first true makeout sesh in it), then drove her to college in Wisconsin and home every weekend, then eventually drove her to Harper the SECOND time I went there. Sadly she finally died in the early spring of 2017, and I miss her to this day. Rest in Peace Bessie. We all loved you.

Say what you will about the Odyssey, but it was the main car of my childhood. Rode in a 2004 nearly every day for about a decade, and it had roughly 230,000 miles when we finally sold it. We still saw it occasionally after selling it. I have many good memories of the Honda Odyssey, and it's truly a great car for what it is.

My dad bought this a week before my birth back in 2001. (I was planned btw). It grew up with me. It was cozy on a stormy night on the way back/to a party. It shuttled me to and from school. It was a old friend. Admittedly, for the first time in it's existence, ours blew it's transmission (totally unexpected right?) It was already on the way out, as my mom had gotten tired of driving it around as had my father, and we were already going to replace it or set it aside for a 2016 Honda Pilot. Not to mention the sliding door was no longer functioning as well so you kinda had to pull it along to close the door. To put in a 4 grand transmission (not including mechanics bills for the actual replacement) in a car we were pretty much giving away for free because hail damage to the roof had rendered it worthless to our insurance company was the definition of insanity. My father gave the car away to a charity radio show that repaired the transmission and sent it to someone who needed more than we did. It still is terrible car, but it kinda grew on me, and it made me very sad to see it go like that. Just a personal story from a younger car lover.

Me and some friends drove a gold 05 odyssey over 6000 Kms to the west coast and through the Canadians Rockies camping after high school. At 5am on the first hour out the tranny slipped and wouldn't shift into overdrive on the highway. Knowing of earlier Honda 5speed issues I had a heart attack. We pulled over and .. stopped the car and started it again.. (classic 18 year old move) and miraculously never had issues again the whole trip. Best trip of my life. So many memories in and around this car.. and because of that.. I love it.

His statements about the power train are so horribly wrong in the context of the van in the video. The Odyssey only had a 4 cylinder option for the first generation, when it was effectively a slightly taller accord wagon (and didn't even have sliding doors). For the second generation it had the 3.5 liter exclusively, with a 4 speed auto from 99-01 and a 5 speed auto from 02-04.

These vans do excellent burnouts, it was the first vehicle I ever spun tire with when I first got my licence. Locked the e brake with the back tires up against a speed bump, took off traction control, and put it in 1. Needless to say, I burned the tires off till the cords were showing. 16 yr old me cought hell that evening when I brought the car home.

It needs that power to get up to speed at all. It's a gigantic brick of shitty steel that weighs about as much as a large boat. Honda S2000 has a 4-Banger that puts out 230+ HP, which is quite amazing. That being a fast, lightweight, sports car makes it extremely good. I don't like Honda at all but I do have to give them credit for extracting that power from a 4 cylinder. It'll probably blow some gaskets after a little while maybe before it rusts through though.

  • @BlitzkriegRap

Violetta What are you guys talking about, definitely a heavy car but you guys are exaggerating. This thing has a power to weight ratio same as the most powerfull Accord. I just don't think that soccer moms need all that power, they should just put a 2 liter diesels in minivans like in Europe.

I had one for a first car, except it was a 2002. My mom got a new car, I got the van as a hand me down (yup a single 16 year old driving a mini van). I called it the "Man Van", turned off the traction control and did burn outs at every green light & stop sign (V-tech powwweerrrrrr bro). It was also very useful, I folded down the back seats & removed the middle row seats. It had cargo space for days. By the end of its life all 4 shocks were broke, had a hard time going into reverse, duct tape held the hood shut, and the passenger sliding door would not open. The repairs were costing too much, it lived to 275 000km and the transmission was replaced once, it lasted me still 3.5 years. I miss that beast. The memories of bombing down dirt roads at not so "legal" speeds are still very good.

This 2001 that you're talking about is powered by a 3.5 liter 210hp VTEC V6. Here in North America, the only four-cylinder models were the much smaller 1995-1998 Gen1 Odyssey based on the 5th Gen Accords, rated the most reliable minivans ever made by Consumer Reports. Those were bulletproof and had no issues. Gen 2s, based on 6th Gen Accord V6, is the one you guys have and they were plagued with tranny issues, like every Honda/Acura V6 made at that time. After all, they were all based on the Accord V6. However, the ones that had replacement trannies from Honda after 3/2005, didn't have issues. There was an issue with the clutch packs overheating that caused the transmissions to fail. they actually handle really well. Sure it's a minivan, but those vans were good handling especially for their size.
