Reginald Barclay: Personnel File

Ойындар

Reg. Reg, Reg, Reg.
I like Reg.
He's come a long way from service on the Enterprise D and E to working on the EMH project alongside Dr Lewis Zimmerman and then the Pathfinder Program at Starfleet Communications. After the shows ended, there were several more tales of his exploits including the record for the longest distance transporter beam in Federation history and his posting on the USS Challenger, so let's take a look at Mr Broccoli.
BARCLAY!
Mr. Barclay.

I know Barclay is abit of a joke, but to me, a man with bipolar disorder, Barclay is amazing. This was the first character I remember seeing in sci-fi with mental health issues, that his issues were not ignored and you see him getting help. To me, this showed me that in the future mental health issues are taken seriously and made me love TNG.

Dwight Schultz is married to a therapist. He often takes roles like this that highlight a mental health issue. Such as H.M. Murdock, or Barclay. I heard that he talks over the role with her to learn how to play it properly and ensure he gets it right. Considering the roles I've seen him in, I believe that he does do that, but I've not seen/heard an interview that he confirmed it.

I don't know... Kirk and Ryker had great trouble with inability to control their libido, a severe mental imbalance. This is a mental health issue that seems to be celebrated in the sci-fi genre instead of dealt with. Sad. But, I'm glad Barclay was a help to you. I could always identify with him.

Barclay always struck me as one of the most “ordinary” Star Trek characters. It’s as if he was a typical Star Trek fan written into the shows without becoming a “Mary Sue” writer’s pet scrubbed of flaws and weaknesses. He had a relatively ordinary job that many fans probably have (basically an “IT guy”) and lacked natural leadership and social skills, although he did often “step up” when needed. He also retreats into fantasy, as many ordinary people would probably be tempted to do if they had access to real holodecks (like on the modern internet, the most common type of holodeck programs would realistically be “holo-porn” in which people create idealized versions of colleagues and crushes to play out their darkest fantasies, and they would be embarrassed if anyone else discovered those fantasies, especially their subjects).

Yes, he seems to be the most common, but Starfleet is not looking for common people... generally speaking, only outstanding characters make it through the academy and are awarded active duty on a starship. I think that Barclay is an exception because he is so technically proficient and quite scientifically brilliant, which makes up for his other shortcomings. It's what Discovery tried to do with that chubby girl Tilly, except that kind of failed because she was so incredibly obnoxious to be around.

Barclay was my favourite character and I have always liked Dwight Schultz as an actor. I always assumed Barclay had Autism. I have autism and I noticed some things he did which are similar to autistic traits. He was nervous and anxious in social situations (social anxiety). He found it hard to talk to people and would stutter (He eventually stopped as mentioned to him by the EMH in Voyager Endgame Part 1, "I haven't heard you do that in years" as he stuttered when asked by the EMH about Janeway). He was really focused on his interests (Holodeck, contacting Voyager with Pathfinder, his hologram) and autistic people tend to have limited interests they focus on and can be obsessive about them. This would lead him into trouble when it focused on those more than his actual duties. He was also very intelligent.

Some people do age prematurely, so Barclay being in his late 20's in early TNG is possible. It helps that Dwight Schultz has a youthful face and an elderly hairline, and has aged little between his appearances in Star Trek. I had to remind myself that he was in The A Team before TNG, so he had to be in his late 30's - but actors rarely play their own age. So he could have been born in 2340ish, just about. We just have to assume the stress of his anxieties has caused him to lose his hair.

Sure, Kirk and Worf and Sisko were heralded for their skill in shooty things or poky things, but many characters were held up as role models for their skill at medicine or computer programming or pure science too. Many people who have worked at NASA over the last 50 years cite Star Trek as their primary influence in doing so -- and that's pretty awesome.

Absolutely love Mr Barclay's character. Really felt for him with his social awkwardness but underneath, such a brilliant mind 'thinking outside the box'. Picards face when he inadvertently calls him Mr Broccoli! I'm so glad Reg achieved recognition for his work on Pathfinder. And it looked like a new (real) romance was in the offing! Great video, thank you.

That actually sounds really good, Barclay being "At times" brilliant" his observing officers place him in a role too high he is Not qualified for, he knows this and with the very Human "Performance Anxiety" causes his lack of confidence at a higher then normal levels. I always have liked Barclay's character and watching that character grow over the titles makes "Reg" one of the most well fleshed out characters in Star Trek.

Judging by his behaviour, I'd say Reginald Apricot Broccoli is an INFJ personality based on the Myers-Briggs personality types. I recognized him in an instant. It takes an INFJ to find an INFJ. Introverted iNtuitive Feeling Judgement =INFJ --I, myself, am an INFJt-Empath. I know intimately how he feels. 🌌🔭 There is one thing not mentioned in his service record because it was sealed by Starfleet Command. His participation in the disastrous Ferengi String Cheese Incident. So sad. It all could have been avoided so easily 😟😩😢😥😳

An interesting video; I enjoyed it. It always seemed to me that Barclay demonstrated behaviour indicative of Asperger's Syndrome but that's just my layman's take on the character. That's probably why he is one of my favourite Star Trek characters. I suppose that the social awkwardness, confidence issues, and being teased by his peers (mine always compare me to a robot *LOL*) struck a chord with me.
