Julian Bashir: Personnel File

Ойындар

The Personnel File has a look at some of Trek's most iconic characters. This week, we are looking into the one-in-a-million augment, Doctor Julian Bashir from Deep Space Nine. He is one of only a few characters who's career we follow practically from his first assignment throughout some of the most character forming years of his life.
Plus we already covered O'Brien so I couldn't leave the duo apart for too long.

Julian learning to stop hitting on Dax and respect her is one of my favorite character growths in the show. He is also shown to be an exceptional friend in the episode where O’Brien is virtually jailed. He was a great addition to the Trek pantheon.

Remember Dax didn't exactly have a problem with the flirting itself. It was the fact he came on too strong too fast before they really got to know each other. And he always respected Dax just didn't quite catch on that he was interacting with her the wrong way .

There are definitely differences though. If I remember correctly Neelix was beloved by the Voyager crew while Bashir wasn't even liked by the DS9 crew. Besides, Neelix was divisive rather than disliked. Some people really liked him while others really disliked him. Bashir wasn't really a character that people had very strong opinions about as much, he was just annoying.

But he isn't at the same level as Jack or Patrick (the genetically engineered humans who suffered side affects of their engineering), for instance, since they never intentionally hid their intellect. One can assume that Bashir did infact lose a bit of his edge, once he had been "in hiding" for so long. But Bashir also lacks the ego that for instance Khan had aswell. But he had 400 years of genetic research etc to thank for that i suppose. While Jack essentially became a psychopath, though not really a sadistic one, still he has problems with emotions and had angry outbursts, he also had trouble talking "normally" due to how fast his mind worked..... and Patrick never matured out of infancy so he essentially just has the mind of a 6 year old, even though he's just as intelligent as the others. Theortically he's just as smart as the others, but he has intentionally been slacking. I mean, most people probably could get an A+ in most subjects today in school if they actually "studied hard", but most of us just don't.... either we find it to boring or we feel content with just a C since we want to do other stuff to, etc.... i know i didn't study as hard as i probably could have.... :P So if Bashir needed an hour to study to get an A+, he'd probably just intentionally study for 45 minutes instead. Enough to get great grades, but not enough to "stand out". He did mention that he intentionally only became the second best student in his class. Enough to get him any assignment he wanted, but not enough to have anyone look twice at his achivements

I appreciated his character arc, it was one of the best of the series and sadly DS9 didn't get as much love in it's time as it deserved. it was the first Star Trek to have people grow and change as opposed to everything returning to a status quo. Yes TNG had miner things change an in universe the Borg changed a lot, but we didn't see much if any of that side. the characters always returned to the same baseline for the next episode. all credit to the writers, directors and actor of Bashir for making a solid character arc. PS his interactions with Garak are some of the best banter in television

I don't think by the end of DS9 Bashir's optimism is "eroded" but his naivety *is.* He's still a very fundamentally optimistic character on a very deep level by the end, and somewhat ironically I think Garak helps bring that out of him *more* by teaching him how to balance it with the crushing truth that can sometimes be reality.

His story arc tied in with the story arcs of Aryk Soon, Noonien Soon and his androids and of course Khan himself. I personally believe that someone looked the character of Khan and thought “how would a Khan that works in Starfleet look like?” Also the way Data and him work together is magnificent and as you pointed out before in a previous channel Data’s nature can be tracked down to Aryk Soon who was the pioneer of the genetic enhancement that Bashir went through.

Dr. Bashir has always been my favorite character of DS9. Everyone else on the show, save Jadzia Dax, came off as pessimistic and angry at the universe. I enjoyed how smart he was and his unapologetic delivery of his intelligence. That's why when he Data met, I was truly hoping that a continuing storyline via crossover episodes would have occurred. Whilst I love that Data always remained on the Enterprise, I would have actually been more devout in watching DS9 had he switched over to the station instead of Worf and O'Brien. Seeing Dr. Bashir and Data together more frequently would have been a perfect match. Data always wanting to be more human and Dr. Bashir actually being more than human would have made for far more interesting episodes of the two teaching each other. *** Oh, and his English accent was so hot!

One thing I love about Bashir is the tension between how others see him and how he sees himself. He's seen in-universe as tragic, getting in his own way by passing up prestigious opportunities because of sentimentality or careless mistakes - and that annoys him. The reality is he's deliberately holding himself back because others' ambitions for him don't line up with what he wants. He doesn't want to do ecological surveys on an Oberth somewhere in the far reaches of the galaxy, he doesn't want to be chained to a desk in San Francisco doing administrative paperwork, he wants to be on the frontier helping the sick and injured, where his enhanced intelligence can go to save lives
