[REGGAE DRUM SOUND] How to tune the snare drum Carlton Barrett style (Bob Marley) - tutorial

In this video reggae drummer @bigfinga talks about his way how to tune a snare drum to get the original sound of Bob Marley's drummer Carlton Barrett. You can hear the sound as well on some of the riddims we recorded on the BuffBaffTV Live Recording Sessions.

I've got to know, is a clear head ideal for this sound? I know we usually see coated heads on a snare, but here we have a clear head. The sound is fantastic, though not entirely open as there is a dampener that appears to make contact with the head. A coated head is naturally warmer with the coating adding a bit of dampening. I suppose the short answer is do what you see if you love the sound, but I can't help but wonder if a clear head is far and away the best choice here. Anybody? Anybody?

@@jonahramirezmusic I've discovered the key isn't necessarily clear vs coated. I had use of a Ludwig Black Beauty snare for a month that had stock Ludwig coated over clear heads on it that were cranked very high. I was blown away with that fabulous reggae sound. Beware though! When I tried tuning the drum lower to within the standard ranges for rock, pop, punk, however, it sounded terrible. Knowing this legendary Ludwig snare is expected to be a top performer at any tuning, I discovered the heads had been stretched from the high tuning in the reggae range and could not recover from this. I highly suspect it was mainly the bottom (resonant) head as it is so thin. If you're seeking that great reggae snare drum sound, I'd recommend having a snare drum of your choice strictly dedicated to being tuned very high for that purpose or, at the very least, heads dedicated for that purpose if the cost of another snare drum is out of reach.
