I had a ten year old fridge many years ago do the same thing. It was the fan in the freezer not working. I had a guy come and he told me the same thing. It will cost you too much, it is the compressor. I took the small freezer fan out, and I took it with me and bought the part and put it back in the same way I took it out and it ran for another 10 years. I wanted a double door fridge so I gave it to my brother the following year. Some of these guys want to take your fridge off your hands to resell or for parts. Happy you were able to get a new fridge right away for your food. Oh, and because the fan in my freezer was dead. It could not blow cold air into my fridge for my fridge to be cold. That is where the cold for your fridge comes from, from your freezer fan blowing it there.

Thanks for sharing your story with us. I also thought that some of these appliance people choose the work that they want to do and when they see a fridge that’s over 10 years old they just don’t bother because they make money just coming in and giving you an estimate anyway.
