Refreshing my flower planter made of pallets | garden vlog

It's time for a refresh of the containers in the garden, including my vertical planter made from wooden palets. Some new plants, a bit of pruning and it's ready to be glorious come summer.
Let's see what I've been up to this week (mid-April) in the garden including sowing lots of seeds including some bush (dwarf) green beans and all those seedlings are coming on great and it's time to get more potted up, but oh no... I'm already running out of space in the greenhouse.
Watch as we dive into the world of gardening, sharing tips and tricks along the way. Whether you're a seasoned gardener or just starting out, there's something for everyone in this thrilling episode.
Stay tuned for more gardening updates and inspiration.

    When this video first posted, I was having a day......as soon as I saw you in the greenhouse, it was like popping in on an old friend and I felt the days stress leave. Each Sunday I look forward to seeing what your up to in the garden. Generally, it's when I sit for a cupper and take a break from all the business of the week. Thank you for inviting us all into your gardens.

    For once I don't feel like I've sown too much as I still have space to fill and I decided to get serious about succession planting, which I do by the moon, this year. So I'll be playing Nick Drake tomorrow and then the next rows of carrots, beetroot and beans will go in somewhere round 8th May. I don't know much about flowers, so I've been taking notes on your vertical rockery.

    **Panicking** We just had 23.3* F (-4.83*C) last night and it’s diving again tonight fast. Ugh! This time of year in the Midwest is not for the faint of heart. We get no sleep as we work hard to prevent freezing of plants especially fruit. It was warm today and I sit here at night wondering if I should run out and cover Haskaps 🙄 as they are finally in great bloom. I left most covering in place or nearby, I suppose I should drag my butt out there as it’s already 35*F. Potting up-started way more annuals and perennials this year and some things are so tiny I do the clump method and sort them out later as long as they are not a fragile plant. It does take up room doesn’t it? I have a shoe horn you can borrow 😅. Pray it doesn’t get as cold 🥶 the next few nights and that the rain stays steady to get out of this drought.

    Great video Eli. Thanks for showing me green beans and for explaining which ones are the little thin ones. I wanted to grow the ones that you can buy frozen but was confused over the type. Luckily I’ve chosen dwarf french and they sound like the right ones. I didn’t know they would be ok in containers so that is good as I only have a back garden to grow in. I’ve planted some on in my polytunnel. Hope they will be ok in there next to my tomatoes. X

    You could try one of my trailing/creeping faves in there, Creeping Jenny (Lysimachia nummularia 'Aurea'), it looks so lovely haning over planters and pots etc... It quite likes wet soil as it's a shallow, marginal plant but will grow anywhere as long as you keep it watered. Comes back every year and extremely easy to propagate. I can't relate to the being fed up with seed sowing, it's my absolute favourite thing, I just want to sow more and more haha! I find it so relaxing. I actually did a free plant pick & mix last year for any locals to come help themselves as I always have loads and gave me a reason to sow loads more seeds (and use some up). So I'm going to do the same this year on an even bigger scale.

    What I'm sick of is the return of winter here in Germany! Frost last 4 days, another 4 to come. -3C this morning, reached the giddy heights of about 7. Last week we had 22!. I've got the house packed out with warm loving refugees from the greenhouse tent, sharing too few UV lights and window space. The new greenhouse is yet again stalled waiting for a replacement huge 6m x 2.1m. It's probably going to go straight to HOT at the weekend. Let's see! • @eliandkate

    2 ай бұрын

    You have to learn to garden with them David. Nothing “stops” or eliminates them. You basically learn to avoid planting the things they will decimate in the places they are most likely to be decimated or take measures to try to make it less easy for the slugs. Planting up off the ground or not in the ground helps. Copper tape works great on pots if you don’t have other plants reach over them.

  • @eliandkate

    @eliandkate

    2 ай бұрын

    OK Amanda, not a single simple answer I'm afraid and you are going to have to do a bit of research on your own, sorry. Very simply, if you have seeds in the soil, you need to keep it moist so that they will germinate. You can't water on a schedule, that's not how plants work, instead, if the soil feels dry, water, if it's still damp, don't wanter. Heat... it depends. Seeds need the soil to be warm to germinate, hence why we usually use heat mats. They usually want hotter than the temperature of our homes... but... if they are indoors it may just means they germinate a little slower if the soil is colder. Seedlings and plants are different from seed starting though, which is where it gets difficult. You will need to look up what temperatures those plants would like. Growlights, some seeds need light to germinate but most don't, however the lights will give a tiny bit of warmth. Once you have seedlings you will need to have those lights on in order to stop the seedlings becoming leggy and weak. As to how long... well plants all have specific needs so you could go find out what the different plants need and go with the most needy... or what I usually do to keep it simple is look at how many hours of day light those plants would get once you put them into the garden and mimic that, mimic sun up and sun down.
