I don't necessarily disagree with what Trita Parsi described, but I won't call Pezeshkian a reformist. Pezeshkian is a moderate conservative with messaging aligned with reformist language, such as women's and ethnic minorities' rights. His politics placed him in a reform camp, but he had no reform plan, just reform language. His hardline conservative counterparts failed to unite against him, so he won the election that got a very, very low turnout.

Not familiar with the internal politics at all, but… if he came out with more aggressive reformist views, would he have even been allowed to stand in the election to begin with?

Iranian here. He is not even a centrist. He is just a spineless agent who said some stuff that made him look like a reformist. He said multiple times during the campaign that I will implement the wills of the supreme leader. Not to mention that interviews resurfaced from him from few years ago bragging about implementing the dress code for women in the workplace (hospital s as he is a doctor)in early years of the revolution before it was enforced by the government in the whole country. Unfortunately all the doors for a peaceful change in Iran has been shut after collapse of JCPOA. That basically was the last nail on the coffin of reformists as it discredited them both for people and for the hardliners. The next change will be pretty ugly.

Abstract Masoud Pezeshkian, a Turk originally from the city of Urmu (Urmia) in West Azerbaijan, is a candidate for the Iranian presidency. Born and educated in the city of Savucbulaq (Savujbulagh, later Mahabad), Azerbaijan due to his parents' employment and residence, he is fluent in the Mukriyani dialect of the Kurdish language and familiar with the Kurdish culture. The candidacy of Pezeshkian for the presidency, is significant not only for the general democratization of Iran but also for the Turkish nation living in Iran and the "Turkish National Cause". In the contemporary history of Iran, Pezeshkian is the highest-ranking government official who has openly stated that he has a Turkish ethnic identity, is proud of being a Turk, and that Persian is not the mother tongue or the first language of Turks. By emphasizing his Turkish identity and expressing pride in being a Turk, Pezeshkian has delivered a historic and fatal blow to the official ideology of the modern state of Iran, as well as pan-Iranism and Azerbaijanism ideologies and their colonial nation building processes. For the past century, these ideologies have denied the existence of a distinct ethnic and national identity known as Turk in Iran, rejected the idea that Turkish is the mother tongue and primary language of Turks, and portrayed being a Turk as a shameful phenomenon. When Pezeshkian was the deputy speaker of the parliament, he was involved in the establishment of the “Faction of Turkish-Populated Regions”. Following its formation, he assumed leadership of the Faction. This Faction, consisted of representatives of all Turks residing throughout Iran with various political leanings, solidified the national name and identity of "Turk" and strengthened the national unity of the Western Oghuz people living in Iran, transforming them into a single entity and a cohesive political force operating under the banner of “Turk”, which is independent and separate from Farsis (Persians) and Farsistan (Persia). In this way, the independent Turkish ethnic-national factor reappeared in the political scene of Iran after the overthrow of the Turkish Qajar state. Over the past century, the Iranian state and Fars nationalists have been attempting to eliminate the "Turk" as an independent political factor and remove it from the Iranian political scene. In his speeches, interviews, and debates, Pezeshkian has consistently advocated the rights of women, as well as national and religious groups and the transition towards the Eyalet system - a form of federalism. He has voiced strong opposition to institutionalized discrimination against national, ethnic and religious groups, as well as gender discrimination. He also opposes the official policy of Farsification imposed on non-Persian nations. Pezeshkian has condemned the linguistic and national genocide of Turks by the Iranian state, mockery and demeaning portrayal of Turks in publications and media. Pezeshkian has insisted on the necessity of providing education in the Turkish language for Turks and in the languages of other nations and minority groups, in schools. Additionally, he has stressed the significance of fostering friendly relations with Turkey and the Republic of Azerbaijan. For these reasons, Pezeşkiyan's name is considered an important and positive figure in the national history of the Turks and the "Turkish National Struggle", even before being elected as President.

@@Ban0ckyes he is lying that the Iranian regime abided the rules of jcpoa. Even former foreign minister Javad Zarif said in an interview which was “leaked” that general Qasem Soleimani took some of the money Iran received as a result of jcpoa agreement and gave it to kremlin so they would help Iran bomb Syria to make sure Assad remains in power and ultimately this forced trump to pull out of the deal. Trita and the Iranian regime lobby in US Niac doesn’t want the western audience to know this part. Senior IRGC officials have said on Iranian national television that they were ordered by the supreme leader, the dictator to go to Syria and make sure Assad remains in power, the same irgc general admitted that this was ordered before there was any Isis or other organized extremists in Syria , meaning they went to Syria when it was just ordinary people fighting a corrupt dictator. Iran needs access to golan heights so they can fight Israel. They are responsible for October 7 attack on Israel because they fund hamas. The leader of Hamas visited Iran since then and met with the supreme leader. Another reason why Americans don’t want to go back to jcpoa but trita never said that either he doesn’t want westerners to know that.
