    Thanks Steve for your WISDOM here. I'm tired of fake techs, professing to TEAR out the ten year old villains before they destroy the amp. Meanwhile, they Destroy their clients tone. Without remorse, or knowing better, because of ignorance.

    Steve is definitely right about filter caps, although, if replaced with the same value, they won't sound different .

    21:40 Didn't anyone notice that the LCR meter isn't reading capacity at this point but resistance (Rs)? The second set of dual caps does display capacity (Cs) at 22:40. THAT is why they were reading so differently. And again at the second measurement of the cap, at 1:39:48 the same mistake is made, however the LCR meter briefly switches to Cs at 1:39:50 to show about 78 uF.

    Wow! Somebody IS paying attentionAs it turned out that LCR meter was turning buggy and auto-ranging randomly. It got replaced shortly after this episode.

    Still don’t understand why you would spend a day poring over meters to put an amp into a state where you’d be twitchy every time turned it on, rather than make it reliable. I see that it’s possible but… are capacitors of sentimental value?

    Very interesting video. But if it was my amp I'd go ahead and change the caps to F&Ts. That way I wouldn't have to worry about it for a long time.

    I have had the philosophy, if it ain’t broke….don’t fix it. I can’t tell you how many times I replaced something that still had good life left in it , everything from cedar shakes to electrolyte capacitors. Only to experience premature failure on the new parts. For shits & giggles I replaced all the filter capacitors in my Carvin MTS3200 with F&T. My little cheap MK-168 tester showed the stock capacitors from 1996 showed better values than the brand new F&T.

    WRT dirty potentiometers, I have used Shellite (lighter fluid) which evaporates quickly and does not leave any residue!

    Can you tell me please, what have you connected the current meter in series with? If it is in series with the volt meter surely it will only read the current going through the volt meter leads which would be relatively constant no matter what voltage is displayed. If it is in series with one of the capacitors you would see the current rise and fall as that capacitor charged up. Unless I have missed something, I'm not sure what the current meter is achieving. Regards, Jeff.

  • @FryetteAmps

    In series with group capacitor ground. So a current spike arising from any capacitor in that group during the reforming process would show up. Note that there are no tubes installed, therefore no load. In an amp like this with relatively small capacitors, the current spike would be minimal. A much larger value like between 300 to 1000uF would yield a much more dramatic result. Also remember that AC input monitor is connected to the 240V step up transformer, so the initial 30V setting yielded 15VAC to the amp input. This was a very conservatively scaled process to make sure there would be no possible damage to the caps. There will be a little more follow up discussion in 2 weeks on the next Malcontents episode, so watch for that.

    The chassis has two extra output tube holes - is it a generic chassis for a Showman?

  • @FryetteAmps

    @FryetteAmps

    2 жыл бұрын

    Good question! Not likely though, because the Showman uses a bigger output transformer. Note there are no additional chassis holes for the larger OT footprint.

    @@FryetteAmps - I understand both transformers would be larger - is the chassis the same width as a Showman (I used to own a couple of Showman amps)? It may also be suitable for a Twin Reverb, however, I would suspect the TR chassis may be a bit wider to accommodate the 2 x 12 inch speaker dimensions - in addition, the TR had Volume, Bass, Middle and Treble on the Normal channel which would make the chassis wider? Very interesting - Cheers B

    Electrolytic capacitors have a lifespan and they are inexpensive. With the cost of tubes and transformers, why risk putting 60+ year old caps into service? I don’t quite understand the wisdom here, but I appreciate the academics of the process/experiment.

  • @FryetteAmps

    @FryetteAmps

    Thanks for your comment, but you're missing the point. Too many field "techs" arbitrarily assign an ASSUMED lifespan to all electrolytics (regardless of type, application or operating conditions) based on what someone else claimed, a profound misunderstanding of how to read a datasheet, or both. That misunderstanding is then applied to justify someone's hair-on-fire notion that a bad supply filter cap will automatically blow a power transformer. We're using a 60 year old amp to demonstrate the folly of that thinking using data, math and evidence. We're going to expand on this on the next episode of The Malcontents. Join us!

    60 year old caps are guaranteed to be DRIED OUT. They might sort of still work. but they electrolyte paste inside is barely wet and is not doing it’s job. They are unreliable and should be replaced.

    Wow,, that amp looks like a bedroom amp that lived it,s life with a cover on it!! Uhh when it comes to those electrlytics I,d shotgun them all! Someone who gigs six hours a night five days a week would make smoke with that amp ,,,and not magic smoke!! They have exceeded their design life in 1984!!!! As to the blue sausages ,,those are probably ok! Some tecks shotgun those too because they see leakage in circuit. But those fibre boards Leo used were actually material used in fibre cases used for drum cases and instrument cases way back in the day!!! Depending on environment they can be slightly hydroscopic. They can conduct voltage to nodes through the board!!!!! Leo liked to save money every where he could.no epoxy glass boards for him!!
