Biasing Dave Friedman's 1968 Marshall Plexi 50w

Ойын-сауық

Back in episode ten of The Malcontents ( • The Malcontents - S2, ... ) Dave Friedman shared with us his favorite amp of all time- which turned out to be his 1968 Marshall Plexi 50watt. He also cracked during the show that it was Steve Fryette that got it back to sounding right in the first place- all the way back in the late 1980s! We all thought it would be good fun and maybe even a wee bit educational to open the amp up and look at what was happening under the hood after all these years...
So sit back, don your best amp-nerd attire and watch Steve dig into this most delightful of tonal relics as well as Dave Friedman's own personal sonic touchstone!

    I had a model 1991 Super Bass (circa around 1970) that had to have some kind of distortion pedal added to it for guitar. Owned it for like 30 years before buying a Deliverance 120. The days of big clean Marshalls.

    I've restored a few older amps and I've gotten the habit of starting out on a variac. I'll hook up my leads across a tube heater and stop the variac when there's 6.3 volts and make note of what the AC voltage. My Framus Dragon is happiest at 117VAC along with my '81 Marshall JCM 800.

Philips used the Philips Miniwatt label and Philips Mullard still used the Mullard Label until they stopped producing in 1988

    I wish there was a way to measure crossover distortion at home. I can bias an amp just fine using a DMM via any of the common methods (shunt method, OT resistance method, cathode resistor method, etc.). But none of that actually shows you if the amp is out of crossover distortion territory.

  • @FryetteAmps

    @FryetteAmps

    Жыл бұрын

    The correct bias setting is usually not a hard value and can vary based on a variety of circumstances. Also, a good idle setting may not entirely eliminate the crossover notch, and trying to eliminate the notch visually may result in an excessive idle setting.

    I'm confused by something, which I hope you can help me to understand. I'm not an electrical engineer, but my close friend is - and he works on amps all the time. He once told me that biasing is something you do with the tubes removed, thus there was no such thing as "re-biasing for new tubes". From my own personal experience, I've been playing guitar for 55 years and have owned dozens of amps (Fender, Marshall, Vox, Sound City, Mesa/Boogie, Line6) and have never, ever had anyone re-bias when I changed tubes. The amps always sounded better with new tubes and nothing else. So what am I missing here ? (please be kind, I'm just a guitar player)

  • @FryetteAmps

    @FryetteAmps

    Жыл бұрын

    First, we're talking about the power tubes specifically. Second, the laser focus on biasing is a relatively recent trend, meaning over the last 30 years. Before that, not a lot of attention was paid to it, and often it wasn't mentioned on a service ticket. So, it may very well have not been done or done without it being stated. Third, many amps did not have adjustable bias, and some still don't. Finally, tubes must be installed and operating to set it properly if it is adjustable.

  • @U2WB

    @U2WB

    Жыл бұрын

    @@FryetteAmps Thank you for your kind reply. To be clear, I have never had an amp serviced; I’ve changed a tube here or there when it either became microphonic or started to glow obviously differently from its companions. Once or twice I replaced the whole set of power tubes to get it back to sounding new again, and it always did. (This was on the Marshall JTM30 and I believe my Sound City 120. Other amps only needed 12AX7 preamp tubes refreshed, and I always replaced all of them together as you would a set of batteries.

    This amp is really not stock and bastardized. The caps have drifted so far out on the B+, a typical 100,50,50,50,50 or 100,50,50,32,32 is 130, 88, 48, 28, 28 ish!! The couplers are 100n instead of 22n, a 330u had been added to the .68 on the 2.7s up front. I see the droppers are 8.2k / 8.2k instead of typical 10k / 10k, probably because the lower B+, so not as much dropping voltage, so voltage to the pre is what a typical Marshall would be. Didn't quite see the NFB resistor (would have to go back), but a see the original ha been cut out and leads of the new resistor tagged to the leads left from the original!! Lots of craziness to this amp and over time! The thing(s) to not is blueprint it to where is is currently, which is 450V at standard voltage...130, 88, 48, 28, 28 B+, 8.2k / 8.2k droppers, the added 330u / 250u caps, etc. Not quite 70%, with 25W dissipation, was running at 67% and 62% in standard and 90V variac modes. Nice video to document everything. Interesting approach to dropping input until heaters were in spec at 6.3V, etc.

  • @FourT6and22

    @FourT6and22

    Жыл бұрын

    I don't understand dropping the mains voltage until heaters are at 6.3V. When the owner plugs the amp in at home or in a studio or on a stage, they aren't going to measure the mains voltage and adjust with a variac unti they measure 6.3v on the heaters. Nobody does that. The MOST anybody is going to do is use a voltage regulator that keeps your mains at 120v +/- a few volts. I think Furman units are plus/minus 5v. So... if your amp's heater voltage is off, what are you gonna do? Nothing. You're gonna plug it in and rock out. I guess it's nice to document that kind of thing on the bench so you can get a baseline measurement. But once it leaves your bench, it's not gonna matter.
