The Collected Ernie Kurtz - hindsfoot.org/ktcek1.html
Ernest Kurtz has been the outstanding thinker of the A.A. tradition's second generation, the one who played a constant leadership role in pushing the movement towards the highest professional standards of history writing and supplied some of its most influential interpretive concepts.
His ideas are vitally important for anyone who wishes to understand A.A. history during the period following Bill Wilson's death in 1971.
As a Ph.D. student at Harvard University in the 1970's, he was the first researcher to be granted full access to the archives of Alcoholics Anonymous. The book that resulted,
Not-God: A History of Alcoholics Anonymous (1979), is still the classic work on early A.A. history.
His book on the spiritual life -- Ernest Kurtz and Katherine Ketcham, The Spirituality of Imperfection: Modern Wisdom from Classic Stories (1992)
-- is equally well known, and has also been an enduring best seller through the years since it appeared. His work on Shame & Guilt (orig. pub. 1981, rev. ed. 2007) has given a whole new depth to the discussion of those two vital recovery issues.

Bill has been known by many who do not drink, like myself who first heard his story in college in the late 60s, as a man who found his life's purpose in discovering how to help himself and limitless others. God blessed him, and, surely, his wife who supported him without giving up on their relationship, if I understand the story. Thanksalot for presenting this video!

There is a story from the desert fathers: Abba and his disciples went into the local town for siupplies. while they were there one of the local courtesans whose clientelle was droping off decided to advertise her wares. (Roe nude through the Market.) whi;le theeyu were walking home the disciples were talking about the incident. Tjhey each claimed to have hidden their eyes. When asked the Master said "what and miss one fo the most beutiful sights of God's creation".

How did the title Not God come about? Was it in reference to AA not being the end all be all for alcoholics and Kurtz's belief that AA was/is not of a divine Providence?

@@lisakinsella3628 not God is reference To alcoholics thinking they are God, in the book. Alcoholics Anonymous, it says we had to quit playing God. That would probably be my best answer for that question.

It's about finding God, seeing God/the good in ourselves and others. Love how Ernie emphasizes the importance of the vulnerability shown by prominent members a.k.a. accepting our humanness ..
