    What's on the menu tonight dear? Is it a lightly toasted straw hat? A hard hat with sweet chilli sauce? Or maybe a simply yummy Sreetips cap covered in a thin tempura batter and deep fried to perfection in peanut oil with a couple of Sreetips stickers lightly dusted with sesame seeds on the side? Click the bell icon for notification. 😆😂🤣

    i am reading an old refining book on pdf and fascinated how smb hasnt got a mention and the copperas being used like the stannous test for checking whats left in solution by dropping green crystals in and look for brown forming on the crystals. it mentioned the stuff spoils and becomes useless when it loses the bright green colour on the crystals, perhaps thats why you needed so much? also interesting the mud dropped by copperas may be more dense compared to smb mud judging by the surprise from yourself by how much it melted to.... and also amazing how much it needed to be rinsed, great video.

    Would copperas be a good first refine and then follow up with SMB for increasing the purity? Would the iron still follow the gold with the SMB if it wasn't fully rinsed off?

    Hello sreetips. Nice video. I dont mind that one broken shot... happens. With the amount of gold looking to be so small, it might be the different way of precipitation. With the SMB it is rather quick, and the gold forms quite a lot of smaller flakes, allmore or less the same size and they do not compact that well. Those are also more easy to rinse, as they have a lot of space between them. With the Copperas it seems to have more time to form bigger gold crystals at the beginning, and later, when the solution is less dense, it forms smaller flakes. And those flakes and crystals just form a more compact "gold sludge", which is apparently more difficult to rinse. The gaps between the granuals are simply smaller. Of course you get a more clean precipitation, but that amount of rinse-waste was a lot. More or less comparable to the difference with silver, one cementing on copper the other with lye and sugar.

    slow addition of reducing agents will create a more dense and cohese precipitate. Faster addition will create a porous (less dense) precipitate. Moreover, the iron salt is already dissolved in water prior to precipitation, while ammonium metabisulfate yu add it to the solution. This induces nucleationa nd cristallization on the shell of the dissolving ammonium salt granule, thus creating a porous less dense gold precipitate. Plus iron sulfate may induce a different precipitaion and cristallization mechanism, rather than ammonium met4ebisulfate, but for this last one im not sure.

    I love your videos they're very informative thank you for everything that you do. Having seen so many of them, I'm aware that there have been different practices employed by you over time.. such as adding dry sodium metabisulfite, aqueous smb, diluted undiluted solutions AR AP, ice bath and none. Which leads me to my question. In this video you added ice directly to the solution. So. I'm wondering if you're doing this because you're trying to prevent glass breakage, and resultant losses due to the cooling coefficient of glass? Or is it a temperature sensitive reaction? Or are you trying to avoid a runaway reaction? Or is an approach to satisfy dilution as well as insurance against everything above? Or am I missing something thank you again

  • @sreetips

    I’m constantly refining my refining techniques. I add ice before filtering because the filter works better, and slower, with a cold solution. During precipitation, with SMB, I always add ice when precipitating Two Troy ounces or more of gold. Precipitating with SMB creates lots of heat if there’s a large amount of gold.

    I think what happened with how it didn't "look" like it was the right weight comes down to density. I'd be willing to bet that the change from MBS to Ferrous Sulfate, and maybe the slow drips down the side of the beaker, made the physical size of the gold change that allowed it to pack down into the sponge. I think that is what that is called, at any rate. Not a refiner (or even a chemist) just like watching the videos. I agree that the MBS reaction is much more 'fun' to look at. And handy with the white foam letting you know you are close/done.

    I'm curious about all you were doing with the ferrous sulfate (and in my experience, it is top notch for greening up fruit trees, setting back moss, harming slugs(big +), and as a cheap way to add iron to my aquaponics system... Anyway, when you added HCl to the solution, didn't you simply produce iron chloride and sulphuric acid? I would suspect that this is doing two things. One would be the same as the SMB and dropping other PGMs, but at a lower rate, because you're introducing iron, which is just an expedient version of your "waste bucket" displacement. So, you've got the illusion of some kind of better option, but the HAuCl already has HCl, so why did you pre-convert only some of your FeSO4, leaving a solution of HFeCL and H2SO4 (assumed)? Also, if iron doesn't drop other PGMs, then what is keeping you from sewering them after the "Waste bucket with iron, cementation" stage? I'd like to know a lot more about these angles, as I've not seen the FeSO4 used like this, and I already have a good and cheap supply of it for my fruit trees, aquaponics, and my war against strawberry-stealing slugs.

  • @sreetips

    @sreetips

    3 жыл бұрын

    Ferrous sulfate is recommended by Mrs Hoke in her book. She also instructs to add HCl to get it greened up before adding to the gold. I’m not sure of the chemistry. I’m just doing it the way I learned it from professional refiners. Sewering the waste before it’s been treated. That’s like pouring acid down there. I prefer removing the metals on iron first, then dropping the iron with sodium hydroxide. That’s the way I learned it from the pros who taught me. I’m not a chemist. Just an advanced beginner and a hobbyist.

  • @buckstarchaser2376

    @@sreetips Ok. That explains a lot... I too am learning the ropes in this fun hobby. By the way, I did watch your video where you neutralize the acid with hydroxide after the iron stage. My point there about "sewering after that stage" was more of a question about "if the iron in chlorinated ferrus sulfate does not drop other platinum-group metals, then how does your cementation system assure you that they are recovered before you eventually lose them?" There is an excellent chemistry channel called NurdRage, who is a chemist with a PhD, and is starting to make videos with refiners in mind. He has some absolutely swell "no waste" versions of some stages that you already do that I guarantee (or no money back) will make you very happy. I recently bought some nitric acid, and the price made my heart ache for the amount of it that you lose forever. He's got some videos that show you how to recover it very efficiently, as long as you're willing to run another electrolysis cell.

    I don’t understand how you use all the distilled water in all other steps, but then use tap water for ice. Depending where you live your adding many different types of other impurities to your gold or silver. Shouldn’t you get a water distiller or build one?

    The book calls for 1 pound of copperas for 50 pennyweight (2.5 Troy ounces). So 454g divided by 77.75g of gold equals 5.8g of copperas per gram of gold.

    professor how to remove the nitric acid content in aqua regia liquid?Thanks

  • @sreetips

    @sreetips

    3 жыл бұрын

    Only add just enough nitric to get the gold to dissolve. If done correctly then there’s no need to remove excess nitric because there wont be any excess nitric to remove - incremental nitric dosing.

    There wasn’t enough to try and recover and refine. But enough to keep fouling my pure gold. Small amounts of platinum are best placed in the stock pot and allowed to accumulate there until there’s at least 10 grams of metal to work with
