This is 100% a testing thing. You wanna test gifting gold works on lots of different scenarios: text post, image post, video post, comments ect on all platforms. Because you work in an office you quickly photograph your desk to get an image to post or some random image online.

Moreover it makes sense to test these services near daily to make sure they haven't been compromised by a code change. I bet L also stands for large. This is specifically to test reddits largest data set, its production. Its really really hard to test systems meant to handle a large volume of data, so instead of spending the resources to have large testing data sets hosted somewhere or have devs downloading the massive data sets locally, they instead have a few hidden tests running on their live site. Kinda hackish, but also the occams razor solution.

03:15 in the monitor you can see a test scenario. This is how QA planning their tests. This guy is just testing the site. The only odd thing here is that they are testing on production and not on test environment.

The odd thing would be not testing on production since they probably are quite separate from the normal developer team, so that team launches a new version of the site and QA just test that "without" knowing if a new version has been launch.

Probably just piling on- but I am a tester for an e-commerce site and testing in production is very common for companies nowadays. Virtually all of my manual testing occurs in production. This includes things like placing real orders and then canceling them, testing review commenting, etc. To show it’s a test to the reliability team (and for analytics metrics), we leave “marks” to show that the order was a test. For example my main prod test account owners name is “Test Tester” lol. My best guess is that testers from reddit have these test subs and test Reddit accounts that they do regression or smoke testing in. Making sure commenting, posting, awarding, upvoting, etc is working after a hot fix or other deployment.

The L likely stands for Large. Testing systems meant to handle large data sets is hard. You need to host those large data sets somewhere and that's expensive. Moreover reddits data volume is insane, think of every post, comment, up/down vote and gold. So instead of testing a huge, expensive duplicated version of all that data, they just hide some tests in the live site. Its a bit of a hack, but it seems to work.

QA stands for quality assurance, you can find the same thing on twitch and use the ENS prefix instead of LSS a lot of the time. Not sure what these mean, could be names of teams, organizations, or actual names of the workers. You made the connection in the end that these people obviously work for Reddit. They are meant to test features both old and new. With twitch, you can actually interact with these channels and be apart of the test (like being given a free subscription to the account/channel and having your subscriber month count total altered with etc.)

That spreadsheet you see is not something they're 'required to do every day when they clock in'. It's a test plan. It's very typical (although why Reddit wouldn't have test automation by now is beyond me) for exactly those sorts of instructions to exist documenting the exact steps needed to perform certain tests. They're usually done prior to and just after new code changes are deployed to public-facing sites to make sure that nothing got accidentally broken and are known as 'regression tests'. Basically, making sure that by making changes you didn't inadvertently reintroduce a problem that had been seen before or breaking parts of the application that worked already.

Yeah definitely tests probably by systems engineers or developers. I'm a developer and when I need to test a functionality I usually call whatever thing I need to make for the test either 'test' or a bunch of jumbled letters from just smashing my hand on the keyboard. The list of items you saw is likely a regression test list. Testers and sys engineers will use these after a major update to the code to make sure every single little thing is still working and wasn't broken by some newly added or changed code. Cool video and I love your stuff, but nothing all that weird about this in particular if you've seen the other side of developing a web app.

In fact, the spreadsheet on the screen in the picture at 5:36 is a test case matrix containing a list of steps to take followed by expected outcomes and the pass/fail status for the specific test case. Though, the fact that Reddit still uses Excel or Google Sheets for test case management is perhaps the most disturbing thing about this video.

i hang out in a discord with a much of guys developing an app, and they all have wierd jokes and strange scripts doing dumb things. It all makes sense in context, but if someone were to get a link to a test they were running itd probably make somebody think a conspiracy was happening. Devs are wierd people man.

I think this kind of testing software and websites is called Monkey testing. For example Netflix is bombarding itself with random stuff to see if it stays stable and up.

    M. Rozzaq Yusaliano how does it jeopardise the account? Reddit staff are very recognisable on the site as most of the time they comment or interact their usernames are marked red and have a Reddit Snoo.

My dad used to do this kind of work at one point. He was an alpha tester for a government contractor and would get these long lists of instructions on exactly what he was supposed to do on whatever application they were working on and then he was supposed to report back if it worked or what the results were or if a bug popped up or something. It was very mind numbing, mundane, and repetitive. He didn't do it for long, he hated it, it was way below his skill level but with the type of work he does and the area he works, in can make his jobs very precarious (if your company only does government contracts, and it doesn't retain it's contract (which typically are for like I dunno 3-7 years. The projects my dad worked on were often 5 year contracts) then the entire division that was working on that project is typically let go. They might keep a few and move them elsewhere but there just isn't enough work to go around. The same thing can happen in the gaming industry when a developer can't get a publisher to back one or more of the games they want to do. Anyways, sometimes my dad had to take some shit jobs until he finally found a good one and alpha tester was definitely one of them.
