  • @yorgle11

    @yorgle11

    2 жыл бұрын

    According to the rule it doesn't have to be accidental. The rule just says you need to not have "complete possession." The rule needs to be revised. It shouldn't matter if you had "complete possession". In this situation the goal should be to err on the side of the offense, since it was the defense that created the problem (no matter if it was intentional). It should be 2 bases from the position at the time of being deflected, no matter anyone's thoughts or feelings about why they think it happened. There should also be an additional allowance for the umpire to award more than 2 bases to any particular baserunner if he believes the runner would have had a reasonable chance to get further.

  • @drmantistaboggn3525

    @drmantistaboggn3525

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@yorgle11 No thanks, adding more ump discretion is always a terrible idea. What could go wrong asking umps to judge something that varies wildly based on the runners speed, fielders arm, etc. The rule is fine as is; just as a ground rule double prevents runs all the time. Sometimes the bounce doesn't go your way. This is all just reactionary nonsense to a flukey play.

  • @yorgle11

    @yorgle11

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@drmantistaboggn3525 The defense should not benefit by mishandling the ball. It wasn't just a random bounce, it contacted the fielder. The rule as written is having the umpire decide whether the player had "complete possession" as a euphemism for "intentional". I propose to eliminate that whole question from consideration and use the "overthrow" rule regardless of the fielder's presumed intent.

    Simple stuff like looking back into the Rays/Blue Jays game that sets Jomboy apart from all other media. The incident with the same team and manager is such a helpful tidbit for understanding the rule and how it's been applied, plus the lipread of the umpire's explanation is so helpful. I've tried to explain this play to casual fans so much and it's so difficult, this really helps people understand the game

    I was there last night. Grandstand 8, behind the Pesky Pole and a little closer to home. As soon as the ball went out, I shouted out ground rule double, AND I FINALLY CALLED A PLAY RIGHT! Regardless of how you may feel about the conclusion of the game, it was an absolute gem of a game - the tension was there the entire time from the eighth onwards, we got some Fenway magic, some Fenway silliness, and it is definitely a game to remember.

    As a Red Sox fan, the most surreal sports moment(s) for me was most likely September of the 2011 season. If you don't remember it, go ahead and read about it. So many things had to go a certain way for Boston to miss out on the post-season, and guess what? They all happened in spectacular fashion. Still makes me scratch my head. If you put away the love for your team, however, it was a mind-bogglingly amazing end to the regular season.

    The key word in Rule 5.05(a)(8) is "deflected". If Hunter Renfroe had deliberately swatted or kicked the ball over the wall it would have been up to the umpire's discretion as to where the runners ended up. However, that's not what Renfroe did. Instead the ball was unintentionally deflected when it hit him and it went over the wall, which is a ground rule double.

  • @alanhess9306

    Consider this: if the order of contact is: •Bat, ground, over fence - 2 bases •Bat, body, over fence - 4 bases •Bat, ground, body, over fence -also 2 bases? I propose a ground-rule triple, as the fielding circumstances are in between the usual ground-rule double and Canseco-style home run - and the effect that the 3rd order of events has on the baserunning situation is, as seen here, more substantial than a ground-rule double.
