Red skin | SLICE | Full documentary

In the north of the Amazon, in one of the most inaccessible forests of Brazil, the Wajãpis live an existence preserved from modern influence. Fleeing from white people, their diseases, massacres, and forest destruction, they tried to preserve their identity and their way of life.
Here, painting one's skin red is a way of maintaining a link with a very ancient civilization. The Wajãpis have a long history of using vegetable dyes to adorn their bodies with compositions and symbols, such as snakes or jaguars, butterflies or fish bones. This unique communication system reflects their world-view and enables them to hand down knowledge about community life.

We need to respect different cultures and allow and protect these cultures… The baby they were painting was so calm… and so chubby … you can tell he’s well fed..I love how they give birth and they protect the baby from harsh lights etc… the babies don’t even cry…. It speaks to the reverence of the people… we could institute their birthing practises… the rooms should be kept dim when a baby is born…

Sorry to disagree…humans have damaged the world and oppressed others throughout history. Ancient Rome caused the extinction of many species and wiped out tribal peoples. They were very intent of Romanazing those they conquered. I can cite other examples from around the world. The Fiunders of the US patterned much on the Romans and had certain,y studied their tactics in dealing with conquered peoples.

These people are beautiful. It is important that their way of life is preserved and protected. This document conjures interesting thoughts for myself though. For the longest time I wanted to escape all of the horrible craziness that surrounds me everyday and live just like this (I almost have several times).. But the dynamics of existence within the physical universe change is constant and necessary. Without it there is no path to a greater understanding of existence. Eventually, the time will come though when the same will happen to any one of our other societies (or all at the same time) and we will be forced to face it and change as well. No matter what you do you will not be able to escape change, It's just the nature of life in the physical universe.

Enjoy your life the way you want and allow others to do the same. That’s always been the problem with the world. Do you realize that it’s been so called “enlightened” people like you throughout history that has gone all over the world 🌎 and destroyed indigenous cultures in the name of advancement and “civilization” because they (you) think that your way of life is better than theirs. As they say nothing is more dangerous than a person that thinks they’re right. In other words “MIND YOUR EFFING BUSINESS”! Leave other peoples cultures alone and allow them to eat the way that they want in peace. The same way that your privileged a** does. I’m sorry but it doesn’t look like the natives have a WholeFoods that they can jog down to a and pick up some of that blessed organic tofu.

In the Philippines we called that fruit as ASUETE..we often used it to enhanced color of the foods. This fruit often found near springs and rivers and it's actually one of my 300+ fruit collections.

I have to say that the blurring of body parts that we westerners find offensive is absolutely ridiculous. Even a very small boy, who could not be more than four or five had to have his little willly blurred out. Why are WE so narrow bloody mided?

The orlean tree or anatto tree (Bixa orellana), Surinamese-Dutch Koesoewe or Koeswe tree, is a shrub or tree in South America that owes its fame to the yellow to red dye (anatto) extracted from the fruit. The species is sometimes split into two or more species. This leads to the curious situation that this species is regarded by some as its own family and by others as merely one of the species in one of the genera in this family.[source?] The orlean tree is also grown outside its natural range (tropical South America), including in gardens. The orlean tree is a shrub up to 6 meters high or rarely a tree up to 10 meters high. The young twigs have red-brown hair. The leaves are alternately arranged, long-stalked, narrowly heart-shaped, pointed, light green and can grow up to 25 cm long. Three to five, often reddish, veins emerge from the base of the leaf blade. The pink or rarely white flowers grow in terminal panicles. They are five cm in diameter, have five sepals and five petals and many stamens. The fruits are up to 4 cm in size, red, egg-shaped and covered with soft bristles. The fruits are capsules that split open in a bivalve, revealing up to fifty seeds (see photo). Anatto, a bright red dye, is extracted from the fleshy seed coat. This colorant is used in lipstick, soap and, under code number E160[b], in foodstuffs such as cheese and margarine. In Central America and the northern Caribbean islands the powder is used to flavor food.Until the end of the nineteenth century, anatto was an important dye that was traded dried. The indigenous people use the dye in fabrics and for painting the body. Dogs are also rubbed with it because of its insect repellent properties. The leaves serve as medicine. The Natives from tropical America used the dye to paint the skin and dye their hair. Such a painted group of Indians attacked Francisco de Orellana in 1541 on his journey through South America. The plant was later named after him.

They may be remote, traditional inaccessible and all of that but to say that their existence is preserved from modern influences is a bit far fetch because they are wearing clothes driving boats with engines and so on which has to suggest that they are influenced by modernity by a bit but still it's a wonderful documentary!!!
