Red Komodo vs Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6k Pro

Storyblocks: bit.ly/2NySYoo
With the announcement of the new Black Magic Pocket Cinema Camera 6k pro, I have been asked how does it stand up to the Red Komodo. This video covers all my thoughts after holding on to these cameras for a bit of time.

@@VivaMediaInc while agree the BMPCC6Ks are and have been fire - the Komodo is DEFINITELY a superior machine. RED sensor + R3D produces frames the BMPCC6K simply cannot. ADD the addition of the RF Mount - the Breakthrough Photography Drop In Filters (a much better far more color neutral option than the built in ND’s) 4x4inch 2 lb form factor, SDI... etc... RED’s latest firmware update including multiple animorphic modes, livestream, wireless control, REAL TIME OFFLOADING... this machine is the cream of the crop for under 10k. Absolutely love my 6k’s tho! While only tools, I have to say, the Komodo is once again a superior machine

If you like their products a lot, the ecosystem makes the decision on accessories, and media for you, which can be easier on some filmmakers. I'm with you though, not a plus for me. @@Triforcefilms I love the third party support for L Mount too, even if E Mount dominates most lens design it is nice to see a mount and lens system that's so flexible and well used by manufacturers. Also ditto on the RF adapter, that junk was a great olive branch to people heavily in EF glass, not enough for me, since I'm in super35 sized sensors anyway, but it was better than what Nikon basically didn't do.

You sound like the type to pass on a Red Monstro 8k/Arri if you had a chance. They're "cumbersome" for a reason (setting up better more planned shots, black shading, etc).Because these are real world production level cameras (komodo just being an entry) so that just means your goal isn't to shoot true movie style videos or true film. Which is okay because then a Red/Arri is not for you.

Enjoyed this video. Love RED as much as anyone who enjoys cinematography. For Indie artists I think the real motivation to go Komodo is passion. Both cameras shoot 6K Raw formats, both formats are excellent. It’s really 6 degrees of separation when it comes to comparing data sheets. For the passionate film maker who will grow beyond the one man army indie artist, RED is the way to go. Neither option holds you back from creating incredible cinematic art.

I'm thinking about the black magic specifically for live music videos and maybe even some light music video work. This video really pushed me instead of upgrading my dslr's to a mirrorless that the tools I have are fine, and I should probably get a cinema camera to keep the video portion seperate that is more focused on that. I have two 6ks and for interviews I get both angles at once. I get 4 angles from two cameras shooting 6k for 4k editing, two medium and two closeups depending on cropping or not. Bigger projects I can even have a production camera and the 2nd for bts or for backup or one on a tripod rigged out and one on a gimbal. That's a lot of production for less than the Red.

great video xDDD But I have still some questions as it's pretty hard to choose between the 6k and 6k pro haha. I've never had a video camera, so I'm somehow afraid that it will be too heavy with the Pocket 6k Pro (1.2 kg DJI Rs 2 stabilizer, 800g Sigma 18-35 mm, 1.2 kg Pocket 6k Pro, and another battery or SSD.) Do you think that could be the case? Especially when you e.g. film the whole day or when you travel and still have a drone. I also wonder if the 6k Pro's "tilting screen" is really necessary? (I filmed with the Gopro and the cell phone on a stabilizer and never really had any problems, even when I walked very close to the floor. Maybe it's different with the camera, as many 6k users said it is necessary). Buying one later would make less sense, as it costs more and is perhaps even more uncomfortable if you use the stabilizer and fix a "DJI 3D focus system" / microphone on the "head" of the camera. I've already looked a bit on the internet and apparently the 6k Pro fits on the RS 2, but it's not yet entirely clear to me whether that's really true. I have one last question then I say more than thank you; Do you actually need nd filters a lot in filmmaking? thxx

Great comparison man! I’ve been wanting to pull the trigger on the RED Komodo for a while now, but you can’t even find one if you wanna buy one right now 😔

Thanks! Can you do a BMPCC 6k Pro vs Sony A7S III vs FX3 vs C70 vs Komodo comparison?

When the RED Komodo came out i was excited, because it was the entry level big time move making camera, it is a legend. Building a basic rig would take me to around 9k and that s a bummer! I decided to go with the 6K pro and i m excited. The camera is so fast to grab and use, has intuitive menus, and mind-blowing picture which you have t see for yourself to believe and all that for a fraction of the price. Its no RED, but its a beast of a camera, which might be my B camera at some point when i might need a bigger production camera. Maybe a RED or even an ARRI! who knows! Content creation and creativity is what we have to work on and you can do this with a 6k pro for many years to come i think. Nice vid!

Who was the bodybuilder? I'd love to see the finished video of her. GREAT advice at the end, Brandon (about being on the fence.) Spot on and someone NEEDED to say it out loud. Thank you. We needed to hear that bro.

Got my first camera in 2018 it’s the gh4 I’m upgrading to the 6k. And man 😂 using the gh4 and dealing with sketchy chicago rappers I always find myself rushing.

You’re comment about the camera owning you vs. you owning the camera is spot on. One additional benefit of the BlackMagic is that is comes with a free license for Davinci :-) The Pocket6k Pro really is an all-in one solution. Love both cameras..

I just started rocking the BMPCC4K and liking BRAW so far. Your comments on the tilt up screen, basically has me sold for my upgrade. I”m working on my own projects... right now a lot with feral cat colonies and rescues. Using the BMPCC4K with ATomos monitor or my JVC LS300 with Ninja V it becomes bulky and slow. Even my iPhone 11 with gimbal can be slow for up close with cats. I’ll change out my iphone 11 for iphone 13 Pro along with my several iphone gimbals. My BMPCC4K is good for many situations, but for my vintage and art lenses with my 0.71 booster I’m missing the corners of say Helios lenses or modern Lensbaby art lenses.. maybe get the Metabones 0.64x that you have on your 4K, and next year the BM6KPro.. faster setup, no need of external monitor. Built in ND like on my JVC LS300 but 6K raw? Ok. I have a plan for next couple of years with projects that are in my near future. OK.. need to shoot some more on my doc project this week and need to start uploading some new content samples. My JVC LS300 is fine for youtube, but yeah, lacking for better... not bad.. but really enjoying BM BRAW format.

Global Shutter and Ergo is really the main reasons to want a Komodo. Otherwise...the color science, image quality, red raw vs braw and everything else is subjective...factor in the lack of internal NDs, it's hard to justify the price difference between the Komodo and the p6k (which is a huge difference lol). 6k pro's biggest weakness is perhaps the rolling shutter and awkward body size, so in my eyes, it's really as simple as is the global shutter and ergos worth the massive difference in price?

I think the pocket is gonna be my go to, its good enough to be professional enough for films on a low budget, and anything with a large enough budget can just rent

Here’s the thing... As a film student, I’ve shot on both bigger RED’s and the BMPCC 4K, and I’d probably rig both the Komodo and BMPCC 6K up - I enjoy the time spent on setting up the camera and making the perfect shot, and with experience you learn to do it quicker as well. The global shutter is almost a must for me, but as a film student who wants to slip my foot into the industry, the BMPCC 6K is the only thing a person like me can dream about getting started with, as few students have the money to buy and rig up he Komodo.

I’m Running on a red Raven right now, I upgraded from a canon 4Dmk IV and Sony A7riii pair and I had just shot an entire feature on 2 5D mkIV’s I was ready for that next step and my God I’m so in love with my RED I can’t imagine going back to anything else I only used the BMPCC6k once for three shots on my feature and I used the original BMPCC 6 years ago for a short afternoon project and while I like Them they don’t give me what I need in my current work of projects
