Hillel's playing was fantastic, such a shame he died so young. Also sad that John Frusciante would also go down for years with his own battle with heroin. It looked for a while like John would suffer the same fate as Hillel, but in the end he did what Hillel sadly couldn't do, which was beat his addiction.

Mark Foster - Same here. At least once a month if not more often for me. It's a perfect record.

When I was a kid around 10 years old. I had a neighbor who was going into college. He was a awesome street skater, in his house he had all these posters, playing record’s all the time and painting. RHCP where very prominent. Uplift Mofo Party was so intriguing at that time. He took me to a show of theirs and it was the only time I saw them with Hillel. I always remember that just amazed by his playing.

'85 - '92 was just an explosive time in music... when alt rock was actually an alternative to the hair metal/glammed-out, synthesized insanity that was "mainstream" at that time. Jesus and Mary Chain... The Cure... Bad Brains... The Smiths.... Pixies... Violent Femmes... Jane's... even the Cult. Anyone remember Love? RHCP was in the middle of the milieu. Best time in music since probably the late 60's and no period since then has even come close, maybe except for the EDM/Trance/House and French Touch scene of the late 90's/early 2000's, if you dig that sorta thing.

I would say the shift in the heavy music scene of the early to mid-2000s was just as good! The emergence of Metalcore really changed the game for"extreme" metal by introducing elements of Hardcore in all different kind of metal allowed bands to not have to go to such extremes OR take the heaviness to the next level! It's not everyone's cup of tea but it was HUGE at the time. It really was the very last NEW variation of "Rock" music by a generation. No generation since has their own variant of Rock that is DISTINCTLY theirs

The dance (EDM) scene started with acid house in the late 80s, followed by the rave/house/trance scene as it progressed through the 90s. I'm from the UK, where was the dance scene was massive and still is.

Hillel Slovak really was such a GREAT guitar player! At a time when it was all about over-the-top shredding and squeaky clean, polished production, Slovak played dirty, RAW, high-energy, funk/punk/rock riffs! He is a HUGE influence on my own playing and he is the first thing that comes to mind when I hear "RHCP" Its always awkward when I say RHCP is one of my favorite bands because I'm meaning the first 4 albums! 3 of which were written by, and 2 played by Hillel

Freaky Styley still remains my favorite RHCP album. It has it all: Slow funk: "Jungle Man" "If You Want Me To Stay", Manic funk: "Blackeyed Blonde" "Sex Rap", Punk: "Catholic School Girls Rule" "Battleship", Spoken word piece: "Thirty Dirty Birds", Jazz funk: "Yertle The Turtle" "The Brother's Cup". I first bought the cassette in the later 80s, and still get into it all these years later. John Frusciante is a great guitarist, I just much preferred the RHCP songs during the Hillel Slovak-era better.

My favorite RHCP album. Saw then in San Diego around 87

I had the privilege of seeing him twice . He had a presence physically and sonically. When he died I was bummed and pissed. I was critical of his replacement. John Fruciante is about as close you could get.That is probably the reason for they fall back on John . After hiatus . Slovak a unique player and individual. A gem. I am so glad I saw this line up of The Peppers. And John has a connection to the energy IMO through respect and Love for the guitar.

Frusciante is overrated. Your vocals are better than your guitar. Hillel is a much more interesting guitarist, and Navarro is the best that passed on the band.

Uploft MoFo Party Plan is an Amazing Album. Early Peppers were so much Fun back in the day. Slovak is a Legend.

I like RHCP, but the Slovak era was really unique. Great video!

Heroin is no joke. I’m at 2 and half years sober, but that first year was not easy. I was lucky enough to have my parents and friends along with professional help. I often think about Kurt, Bradley, and Hillel a lot. As a guitar player, part of you truly believes drugs help the song writing process. I wrote a song a month into a sobriety that really summed up how I felt during addiction. It got 51K listens on Spotify. It’s weird…would I have gotten that without the heroin use?

Freaky Styley and Uplift Mofo reminds me so much of high school. I still remember the day my friend Chuck telling me that he had died. This video really got to me.

Kudos my man! You dug deep for this one. A lot of this I have never heard before.

In a way he was kind of like to the Chili Peppers what Syd Barrett was to Pink Floyd.

@@jlobiafra Yea, that was more of a traditional rock and roll style of music imo. There are several excellent tracks on that album though. Higher Ground, a Stevie Wonder song, was fantastic! Knock me down also...I believe was written about Hillel.

He was great. I saw them in…86 I think. It was my first concert and they opened up for X…Pomona Ca. They blew my mind. Also saw them about 5 more times until they went to seated stadiums.

He was a special talent. He fit perfectly w/the Chili Peppers.

1. Sid, have you been getting contacts from artists representatives lately; thus the disclaimers at the beginning? 2. Nothing against John Frusciante/Josh Klinghoffer/Dave Navarro; but I still wonder what the albums post Uplift Mofo Party Plan would have sounded like had Hillel not died? 3. Of course, RHCP had temporary replacements for Hillel and Jack before getting John and Chad; D.H. Peligro (who got fired because of his own drug issues; but did get writing credit for 3 songs on Mother's Milk) and DeWayne McKnight (fired after 3 shows because of lack of chemistry. McKnight was so upset he threatened to burn down Anthony Kiedes's house!). Yet both of them were able to record a song "Blues For Meister" which appeared on a later RHCP rarities/outtakes album.

Never been a fan,so to speak,of this band. I mean,they’re okay but,not my exact taste. However,I do admire the fact that they never forgot their band mate and friend. Very touching.

One Hot Minute, Uplift Mofo and Blood Sugar Sex Magik are their best albuns.

My all-time favourite guitarist. Not even necessarily because of technique, but the energy this guy conveyed when playing is just very unique. Alain Johannes is a magnificent artist as well.

Just lost my older brother to fentanyl overdose this year. I found him on floor dead In his apartment. It’s a hellva hit to your soul. We lost so many……… for the ones gone too soon rest well and we 😢 miss you

Genuinely sorry for your loss. Hope you will find some peace within yourself in time. My older brother almost died due to drugs and it was a very heartwrenching time when he was in the grip of addiction. Can only imagine (and don't want to) your pain. All the best to you and your family.🌹

His death was fast and painless and I’m comforted by that fact. I dint wish this psin on anyone. I wish for more treatment, understanding and empathy for those who struggle with addiction. I hope we can save more lives by harm reduction strategies and save more lives in the future. Many of these deaths are unnecessary, we can do more to help prevent them. I volunteer my time for organizations that help homeless/addicted/hopeless people in my community so that I can hopefully help spare someone and their families this pain. Thsbk you and be well!!!

We can’t arrest our way out of problem, changes in policy can make safer changes and choices for individuals who have opiate addictions. Safer access and harm reduction can save millions of lives , incarceration does not help, a more humane approach and treatment is possible.

Great video. So sad. Also, Flea comes-off as a true friend and a real sweetheart. I guess I didn't really know too much about it their early history, other than knowing that Hillel Slovak was their original guitarist and that he died from a heroin overdose in 1988. I had no idea that he taught Flea how to play bass guitar, and by now of course Flea is one of the all-time greatest bassists. Pretty amazing. I guess when you got musical talent, it comes-out eventually.

I don't listen to RHCP anymore, but Flea and Kiedis have my eternal respect. Flea just seems like an overall fantastic human being and outside music, I could read anything Kiedis writes.

I got into.RHCP.around the time of ' ' mother's milk" album, then went back & played all the early albums to death, I know the guys are prob tired of playing that early stuff, but it's my fav era for this band . Lots of people have no idea about those first 4-5 albums ! Thnkx for the music, slim

It's heart breaking but im 52 and jammed the peppers since the late 80's and never knew that they dedicated my favorite album from them to hillel.✌️cool for school.

Not so much a comment about Hillel, but i read Anthony's 'scar tissue' about 10 years ago and it totally turned me off him. Incredibly self centred individual just like his dad. Flea on the other hand is a true good human being.

That's interesting. I couldn't stand the chili peppers, after reading scar tissue I developed I new respect for Anthony, not just for what he's been through, but the love and support he gives to those around him. Seems like a kind, caring guy to me. No doubt he had his moments (who doesn't)

I’m in a RHCP tribute band. Were called the Green Mild Bell Peppers. I would describe our sound as “Medio-core”

He was so unique. Such a tragedy but at least on the bright side someone as amazing as John frusciante eventually replaced him

Actually, D.H. Peligro played drums for RHCP between Jack Irons and Chad Smith. He just didn't play on any RHCP albums.

Why no mention of Space Grass????? That’s a great tune. Back home that got a lot radio play and sounds like nothing else they recorded.

Hillel is severely underrated. You can hear the Adrian Belew and post-punk influences in the solos he did. The OG Chili Peppers style is like RATM in 1983, and you can hear Hillel play around with kill-switch/turntable effects on Freaky Styley and Uplift Mofo. His bootlegs tell a different story, his playing with What is this shows that he was just as capable as Frusciante when it came to unusual chord progressions and crafty guitar parts. In a perfect world, he wouldn't have died and Frusciante would have came into the band anyways. (and isn't the intro to Rocket Queen by GnR supposed to be Slash doing a Hillel impersonation? They went to school together and played in the same LA scene, and I know that the band outright admitted that Rocket Queen was a Chili Peppers homage...)

Wow, they had the captain beef heart drummer originally. I did not know that.

Well, Jack Irons was their original drummer. Jack and Hillel were part of The Peppers and What Is This simultaneously. As both What Is This and The Peppers both were recording their debut albums at around the same time, Jack and Hillel were forced to make a choice: Stay in The Peppers or stay in What Is This. They felt that What Is This was the more serious band, with more potential, and that The Peppers were more of a joke, and wouldn't be around for long. (The irony!) They chose What Is This, and Anthony and Flea chose Cliff to replace Jack until he returned.

Except while Metallica still performs material from the Cliff Burton era live today, as their first 3 albums are hailed as all-time metal classics, Red Hot Chili Peppers, on the other hand, have all but disowned the Hillel Slovak era, hence why they only tease the songs from that era mostly over the years live.

Another great episode and another sad tale of addiction. How do we get the word out that regardless of your status or talent or wealth or strength heroin WILL beat you. We can stop with the "set a bad example" method, it ain't working.

Idk I think Hillel was more out there as far as his creativity went vs John. Hillel’s riffs were so interesting

They pretty much suck him off like he was the band's savior. RHCP hire their members based more on chemistry than talent. They obviously get on very well with JF and would rather have him in the band because of their cultivated friendship and connection. I would think that SNL stunt would have gotten him banned from the band.

Amazing that they were able to not only survive as a band after losing him, but go on to superstardom. I have no doubt Frusciante would have been a famous guitarist, regardless, but the RHCP was the perfect band to showcase his particular talents, and I wonder if they would have become so famous without him. I love their stuff with Slovak, but it seems maybe they would have stayed underground because his style was a bit too punk rock for radio. Just one of those tragic situations that turn out maybe to be a blessing in one way, but that doesn't mean it's a good thing or should have happened.
