I think the second problem with the shield idea is that dropping them would mean to deactivate them. I'm starting to think these guys didn't graduate from Starfleet Academy.

Not really. One of the guiding principles of Red Dwarf was that it wanted to avoid a lot of the Trek cliches, so doing the opposite of what Trek did would have been perfectly in keeping with that ideal. 🙂

Of course not. Cat had undergone 3 million years of evolution whilst Lister was stasis. Rimmer was a hologram of the original Arnold Judas Rimmer, who - together with Dave Lister (Technician 3rd Class - the lowest rank possible) - helps maintain the chicken soup vending machines onboard the Red Dwarf, which even the robots didn’t do. Dave Lister had smuggled an quarantined pregnant cat onboard the ship, hence Cat (Danny John Jules). The reason Lister survived was that he had been sentenced to 18 months in stasis, without pay!

This all leads up to Gunmen of the Apocalypse when Cat suggests a complicated plan (which they end up doing) and then when there is agreement he says something like "you are going to listen to one of my plans, are you crazy?" 😂 Then it happens again and he says"twice in one lifetime? When you're hot you're hot!"

In Red Dwarf, it was spelt Kryten. He was based on a character from a classic stage play, The Admirable Crichton. His look may owe something to Max Headroom, but it's probably just down to the practicalities involved in making a human actor look like a robot. Sorry, mechanoid.

Everyone sees the funny part about this, but there is another blaringly obvious thing people seem to forget. They are talking about 'Defensive' shields????? What exactly are OFFENSIVE shields then ?????

At the risk of being labelled a nerd, defensive shields are strong enough to defend you from deliberate (and accidental) attack, whereas navigational shields protect only from typical minor interstellar debris. The Academy will have been rather a long time ago in my personal timeline so I can’t recall much more detail.

One might surmise that offensive shields are similar to Star Trek's tractor beam, a field that encompasses enemy ships preventing them from moving or firing on anything outside the shield.
