Red Dot Forum Camera Talk: Leica SL2-S
In this special installment of Red Dot Forum Camera Talk, David Farkas and Josh Lehrer will discuss the brand new Leica SL2-S, just introduced last week. Built on the same platform as the top of the line SL2, the SL2-S features a newly designed 24 megapixel full frame BSI-CMOS sensor offering speed and low light capability geared towards both photography and video applications. They'll explain where the camera fits into the lineup, see how it compares against the SL2, and discuss whether it's a worthy upgrade from the SL (Typ 601). Feel free to send questions beforehand, or ask us live.

You guys are such a credit for Leica. Thank you all (and the rest of the team) for these amazing shows!
Thank you for these shows, they’ve never failed to bring a smile to my face during what has been a pretty difficult year. Wishing you and the whole team happy holidays and a great start to 2021!
Like the show… I’m new to Leica ( digital) but I own a IIIf and M7 from the film side! I purchased a Q2 couple months ago and love it and I have a SL2S coming next week… can’t wait! I’m dipping in your show to learn more and more … keeping coming! Cheers..
David, you should do an episode just on the video feature and how to use it as a video camera. I have always used sl/sl2, to take photographs only. When I look into the video side of SL2, I'm completely lost as how to setup up to record a proper video. Just a thought. Thanks.
First of all I love your camera talk. It is very informative to me and you guys give a comprehensive look over literally everythiing. Good job!!! I`m also switching from a CL camera to the SL2-S and I own the TL f1.4 35mm. Here is my question: what can I expect from that specific lense IQ wise? Is is enough for approx. A3 prints and is the resolution fine? I`m seeking to buy the APO Summicron SL 90mm but at the beginning I want to shot with the TL f1.4 35mm... Many thanks for your reply. Keep going! :D
Josh tried to promote Harry & Sally Traffic Red Limited Edition bag so hard that I have placed an order for one!
Excellent as always

Glad you think so!
Hi guys. Love the channel and keep up the great work. I love my SL2 and just started shooting my daughter soccer matches for college videos. Can you reco the best settings for this or would the SL2-S be better here? Will SL2-S be better than SL2 for action/sports? I just sold my SL2 601 and just wondering on the SL2S for action photography/ shooting video of games... thanks for any insight.
Intending to go with the 47mp SL. I have never shot video and given the ongoing cost/investment in new lenses for the SL system going to make do with TL lenses for now, which you guys have often said you've used on the SL. Thank you as always for a great presentation.

Sounds like a good plan!
Love your show! :) Is the noise difrence on pixel level or scaled to same size? If scaled the SL2s high iso performance is amazing! And also the viewfinder in SL2 and SL2s is only about 2 megapixels (1920x 1080) . Dots and pixels is not the same!
Question: is the Leica Foto a good GPS alternative, even in no cellular coverage area? GPS is one of 601 features I love.
many thanks, very good info. What is the difference in Iso between sl and sl2s?
Ok guys, Thank you for this! I bought the Leica SL2-s. You got me when you were explaining about the EVF and its advantages.

Great to hear! The SL2-S just continues to impress.
I start to wonder if I won't go for a SL2-S + 24 and 65 DG DN lenses... Contemporary range of lenses is exactly what I was waiting for : excellent optical and construction quality (even if they are not 100% weather resistant), light and affordable lenses for L mount. And I must admit that SL2-S features are great. I just miss a tilt screen...
AMAZING
Hi there, Im actually building a live stream setup with my SL2 and SL2S and was thinking you guys probably have the best tips about that :D. I didnt find any video around setting up the SL2x for this and was wondering if you could point me in the right direction. It would actually be great to see a video of how you set your studio up (if you havent yet)
Love the SL2-S video, and love my new SL2-S but I note that no hotshoe cover was supplied..how can I get one, and if there isn’t one for SL2-S, is there another Leica alternative in the UK..?
I watch a bit of this when it streamed and stopped because I thought nice camera but not for me (no phase AF). Now after trying the SL I am watching all the SL videos to answer all my questions.
Great video! Do the SL cameras have in camera focus stacking? Like for shooting food or macro. Thank you
@RedDotForum

The SL2-S doesn't currently have in-camera focus stacking, but it's possible this could be added in the future, as it does have multishot capability.
Ok guye Thank you for this bought the Leica SL.2 s you got me .

Question : -Do we get a Q2s soon? -does the SL2S have the same battery issue like the SL2S at 4k,that you can only use it in 4k to about 50%battery charge -does it work in conjunction with the stabilized Panasonic lenses -does it have dual ISO like Panasonic
Two questions but first let me say I love what y’all do! 1 can I tether with capture one with the SL2/SL2-s second please discuss if the L Mounts are as good as the Leica L Mounts! Thank You
@darkroom8317
3 жыл бұрын
Capture one 21 has tether support for the Leica SL2/SL2-S... finally! Panasonic L mount lenses are great & a lot cheaper than the Leica L mount lenses... if you want to save even more money you can get the Sigma L mount lenses as well, though several of the sigma lenses produce a good amount of vignetting, that is how you can tell the difference, though you can crop that out. I have a full frame Russian lens adapted on my L mount & it works great, but it does vignette... hope this helps!

@@darkroom8317 thank You yes it does I’m buying the SL2-s
I can´t choose between an SL2 or SL2-S because I have several TL lenses, if I choose an SL2 i won`t have the best high ISO performance, if I choose a SL2-S the crop factor will make my TL lenses unusable, so I`ll keep waiting for a new CL with better resolution and low light performance. Hope Leica will do this way. In body IS would be great ! Thanks for your videos.
When I shoot with the SL2-S I generally like to shoot with the EXF screen showing the grid, and level indicator, but I would like to add to that the exposure graph as I,like to shoot with exposure to the right and wish to see that graph together with grid and level indicator…can you tell me the easiest way to set that up please, thanks John H a big SL2-S fan
Hello from the UK - I wonder if anyone has seen the huge number of videos recommending back-button focus, which I have tried on my SL2-S. At first it seemed ok but on a trip to Istanbul I took my SL2-S with 24-90, and my Q-2 - (a fantastic combo) I ran into trouble. Switching between the cameras I kept forgetting to focus my SL2-S especially after time spent using the Q-2. Infuriating having to re-shoot areas that I suspected rightly that I hadn't focussed my SL2-S when it wasn't immediately obvious in the viewfinder. Switched back to using the shutter button to focus. Anyone else had this experience?
Super dumb question: is the Visoflex compatible with the SL2 and SL2-S? Thinking of how to frame low angle shots without a flippy screen or a monitor.

Where in the Leica Website can I download the Leica LUTs ?
is it better AF of SL2-s then canon 1DX? I need new camera for street moving random portraits
I hope the SL3 has a 50 - 60MP ish BSI sensor next
Are M lenses like the 50 nocti or 90 summilux good for video recording on the SL2 or SL2-S or should just stick the L mount lenses??
@RedDotForum
3 жыл бұрын
M lenses offer a different look from SL lenses. They are more classic which many prefer for cine applications. The 50 Noctilux and 90 Summilux would be awesome for video and each would offer something completely different than what you could achieve with SL lenses. Out of those two, I'd lean towards the 90 Lux, which is just luscious in its rendering, but also extremely sharp at the point of the focus. My best advice is to just try everything you can and see what you like!
Is this a QVC Channel for Leica?
My needs are Sub Zero body. Long lasting battery. 24 MP at 300 dpi to 360 dpi native files. Raw Movie mode @ Cinema file with auto smart white balance. Speed P-24 60, 180, 240 with audio. I would like to see Post editing programs smooth better cropping down at 24 MP. That way the developers focus more on field needs vs graphics.
If you guys had to select only one SL camera, would it be the SL2 or SL2-s?
@RedDotForum
3 жыл бұрын
As we always say, it depends on what you are shooting. The SL2 is better for single shot (or multishot) high resolution needs in decent light or in low light on a tripod. The SL2 is also great with the much more compact TL lenses, yielding 20MP images in APS-C mode. The SL2-S is superior for videography and for handheld shooting in low light conditions. Of course, the SL2-S can still turn out very high resolution on a tripod when used in 96MP mutlishot mode.
I found the easier solution. Keep my SL601 (cause it still rocks) and get the SL2. I ordered one with the 50Lux. I am a portrait shooter so softer skin tones and M rendition is what I am after
51:07 High iso question
Is the SL2/SL2-S a Panasonic inside, with a l Leica Shell
@RedDotForum
3 жыл бұрын
No. The SL2 is a 'real' Leica camera, not a rebadge or anything like that. As long-time technology partners, Leica does take advantage of some of Panasonic's tech and components for their cameras, such as IBIS, Depth from Defocus AF, multishot stitching, etc. And this works the other way as well. Panasonic licenses the L-Mount from Leica rather than creating their own full frame mount. And Leica contributes to the optical design for many of Panasonic's lenses.

I have a question regarding flash transmitters. Does this new Leica use the Olympus/Panasonic hotshoe mount flash control transmitters for Elinchrom flash systems?
What is the base ISO of the SL2-S? Is that even relevant? Sorry if I missed it.
Now we need an M10-S with a better EVF add-on and outstanding high-iso capabilities. 24mpix is just fine, but the M-series EVF-experience honestly sucks (I have the M240) and none of the M-series cameras apart from M10M have decent high iso capabilities.
guys you have hands shadows in this video. why is that?
Leica please make a SL2 monochrom!!!
S stands for second.
why didnt they keep a consistent color science? Especially since a lot would complement SL2 with SL2-S it makes the workflow painful. That said I think I prefer the SL2-S color.
Why not a flip 🤔 screen 🤔
I love these shows but you should ignore questions from miserable backwards boomers that want a discount and no video in 2021. PS Pickering, Ontario is not an exciting place but it is very beautiful.
Why lost GPS ? Why not back Leica dot ?
Why they don't have a flip 😕 screen 😕 😒 😐 it 🙄 would be more 🤔 practical 🤔 😏 I think 🤔 😕
2:32 I like that😍💋 💝💖❤️
Ooooh, the SL2-S has black lettering! They mentioned it three times in the first few minutes, so that must be very important. If I'm spending $5,000 on a camera, do you really think black lettering means anything to me? If this is Leica's way to impress potential buyers, I'm not at all friggin interested!
@RedDotForum
2 жыл бұрын
The difference in black vs white lettering isn't a selling point as much as it is an obvious visual differentiator. A lot of SL photographers have both the SL2 and SL2-S, so being able to tell them apart with a single glance is convenient. The impressive part of the SL2-S is how ridiculously capable it is in low light, both for still photography and video. Since filming this episode we switched out our studio cameras for a pair of SL2-S bodies - the increase in image quality and shooting flexibility was immediately apparent.

Actually, at 56:53 we showed test video footage at every ISO using a Color Checker target, then two real-world clips. The first at 1:25:42 was of various birds and nature subjects under challenging contrasty light. The second clip at 1:27:29 showed off a nice sunset on a Florida beach, demonstrating high ISO and high dynamic range capabilities. Keep in mind, our time with the camera has been brief. We hustled to test it out to the extent that we did. We'll have more content coming as we continue to get more experience with the SL2-S.

It really does look great. 0 Distortion, 0 vignetting, and what looks like 13 stops of dynamic range. What lenses were used for the sunset shots?
@RedDotForum
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Most setups were filmed with the 24-90 SL and a couple with the 90-280 SL. The Leica SL zooms are incredible performers. I'd also add that there was even more dynamic range available in the L-Log files, but I brought down the shadows a bit to give some additional contrast.
