    Great overview thank you. Mine arrived yesterday, and I wanted something where the file size was more manageable than the SL2 and also hopefully maybe half a stop better ISO performance. My first Leica and I am looking fwd to the shooting experience. Thanks Again

    Hi Ian. I'd say the ISO was more than one stop difference - but only at the higher ISOs. At low they are very similar, and 25000 no contest.

    Nick: great video as always. Question for you...in the sequence of the moving car, you had mentioned that it was shot at 1/500 sec with AF-Cand field. Are you still using back- button AF, and if so, do you still single-tap the joystick once, or do you need to hold it down during the burst sequence to lock the focus? Many thanks!

    Hey Brad. I was using Field / AFc and using the shutter button half-held to track. You can also set the joystick to trigger AFc when the camera is in MF, then hold it down to track. This is possibly a better way but I didn't think of it at the time!

    Nice, informative video, as always! I have three questions, if I may: 1- how long does it take to clear the buffer if you fill it while shooting RAW? 2- Could you say anything about shutter lag compared to a Leica M (a 262 in my case)? 3- How does the dynamic range (at high ISO) compare to the SL2 or M10R? I shoot quite a bit of dance with stage lighting and sometimes have to deal with a bit of clipping. Btw: I love that this SL2S tethers to Capture one now!

  • @LeicaCameraAustralia

    Hi Filibert. 1. Using a 300MB/s card and shooting the full 50 consecutive DNG files at 25fps, the buffer clears in 12 secs. At 20fps it will shoot DNG almost indefinitely, and JPEG indefinitely. There seems to be a 50 frame maximum per burst at 25fps but with JPEG the buffer clears in a couple of secs. 2. Shutter lag is effectively non-existent, by that I mean it appears to be instant. I have no way of timing it beyond my own senses. 3. DR should be slightly better than the 10R and SL2at high ISO. At, say, 6400, it should be about 1 stop better so you can protect your highlights and still pull out shadow detail. For high performance work, the SL2 is a big step up over the SL2. That camera prioritises high resolution over speed. Think medium format film camera vs 35mm film camera.

    I’ll be using non Leica m lens such as Voigtlander with my SL2S. If I map the lens in the SL2S lens profile to a matching profile will I have IBIS and Auto ISO?

  • @LeicaCameraAustralia

    @LeicaCameraAustralia

    2 жыл бұрын

    Stabiliser, yes. But you do need to choose a lens profile even if it's not an exact match - just the focal length should be enough. This allows the stabiliser to work correctly. Auto ISO will work all the time for any lens. Also, beware of cheap lens adapters (if using one). Some stop the camera registering the lens and cause problems.

    Nick, hello again. The last I wrote to you it was in wrt the Noct M 75 1.25. I now own that lens and I’m loving it! Thank you. Nick, I own the M3, M10 M, and I’ve been waiting patiently for the M11. While my patience hasn’t waned, another ‘color alternative’ option in the form of the SL2-S has caught my eye. I know that you marveled over the 75 Noct being married to the SL2. What are your thoughts wrt SL2-S being married to M glass? Be Blessed, Doc Chaps

  • @LeicaCameraAustralia

    @LeicaCameraAustralia

    2 жыл бұрын

    SL2-S and SL2 - same thoughts. The 75 Nocti works brilliantly on both, you just get more pixels with the SL2. The SL2-S is better for video, and is a little better at high ISO, but is a smaller file than the SL2 - so your choice will be determined by your own specific needs.

    @@LeicaCameraAustralia Nick, thank you for you fast and informative response. One last question please. Given your vast experience with both the M and SL systems-does the SL2-S match the M in IQ? I previously owned the the SL2 and sold it because it lacked the ‘M’ look. I just received my first pair of prescription glasses in my life. RF MF - who knows how much longer I can really enjoy this unique experience? That’s why I’ve revisited the SL system/SL2-S. But if it can’t give me the M look, then I’ve wasted my time and my money. Thank you, Nick. Be Blessed, Doc Chaps

  • @LeicaCameraAustralia

    The M look is a function of the M lenses. You will get as much of an M look with the SL cameras as with the M cameras. Having said that, the 'experience' of shooting with an M is of course different to that of an SL. If you didn't like the SL2 then the SL2-S will not be any different in terms of look if you use the same lenses.

    I cant decide which sl to buy. I already own the CL with 18mm, 23mm, 18-56 and 55-135 TL lenses and also own the Q2. Im an amateur photographer so won’t need to print ever. Any client work is online, photography for their websites products, house exteriors and interiors. I’ll be intending to use the CL lenses at the start while I build up (save up!) for more SL lenses, therefore bearing in mind the crop factor using the TL lenses would I be better off with the 47megapixel model rather than the 24? This is the only thing I can’t decide on to help me make a decision. I don’t do video so the video capability of either camera isn’t a deciding factor really or the price difference between the two. And the first SL lens i intend to buy first is the 24-90. Any advice, suggestions you could give? How much resolution would I lose on the 24 megapixel sensor using the TL lenses or am i safer going for the larger pixel model? Is the SL2-S “new’ in any significant way over the SL2 that’s a couple of years old now?

  • @LeicaCameraAustralia

    Using the CL lenses on the SL2S gives you a 10.6MP capture. On the SL2 it's more like 20MP. The SL2S is new in the sense that the high ISO performance is much better at high ISO than the SL2.

    What are your views on the following. Leica built beautiful and indestructible camera bodies that can last a lifetime like the SL2 range. That was OK for the film cameras, but now in the everchanging technology of the digital era , it is difficult to justify the high cost of the Leica SL bodies. The Q series offers a solution in that in the price you get a fixed lens all in a lightweight body , For the SL system may be Leica should change direction and adopt the model that medium format cameras adopted with a detachable back . Rolleiflex as well introduced the 3003 model for the 35mm format. Built the sensor and the “brain” of the camera into the detachable back that can still be updated via firmware , but when technology advances beyond the firmware option the user will have the option to buy a new back while retaining the Leica SL body. If anything I believe there is a lot of input for the sensor and electronics from other far east companies, so Leica can concentrate on what they best, optics and bodies.
